Hyperparathyroidism With Normal Albumin-Corrected Total Calcium In Patients With Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1, J. J. Shepherd, Bin Tean Teh, V. Parameswaran, R. David Sep 1992

Hyperparathyroidism With Normal Albumin-Corrected Total Calcium In Patients With Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1, J. J. Shepherd, Bin Tean Teh, V. Parameswaran, R. David

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

In the largest reported family of patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1), hyperparathyroidism was expressed at first screening in 33 patients by elevation of ionized calcium (IC) (30 cases) or parathyroid hormone (three cases) without elevation of albumin-corrected total calcium (ACTC). Three of these 33 patients have shown a progressive rise in IC and later an elevation of ACTC. However, the age distribution suggests that in others the level of IC may remain stable at a minimally elevated level throughout life with ACTC remaining normal except for transient rises at the times of intercurrent illness or surgical …

Extracellular Ca2+ Sensing In C-Cells And Parathyroid Cells, Hans Scherubl, Maria Luisa Brandi, Jurgen Hescheler Sep 1992

Extracellular Ca2+ Sensing In C-Cells And Parathyroid Cells, Hans Scherubl, Maria Luisa Brandi, Jurgen Hescheler

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

An essential function of C-cells and parathyroid cells is to monitor the extracellular Ca2+ concentration. The Ca2+-dependent secretion of calcitonin (CT) and parathyroid hormone is known to be mediated by corresponding changes in the intracellular Ca2+ concentration. To address the question of whether Ca2+ influx through voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels couples the extracellular to the intracellular Ca2+, we applied the patch clamp technique to C-cells of the rMTC 44-2 cell line and to parathyroid cells of the PT-r cell line. The rMTC cells displayed dihydropyridine-sensitive, voltage-dependent, high-threshold Ca2+ channels which allowed ion …

An Average Per Capita Formula For The Shapely Value, Irinel C. Dragan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

A new formula for the Shapley value is given which does not require the storage of the [see pdf for notation] values of the characteristic function in the computer, and avoids the search in the memory for such data.

The Promethean, Volume 01, Number 01, Fall 1992, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

Welcome to the first issue of Concordia's literary journal, The Promethean. I could go on and say how much blood, sweat and tears went into the development of this journal, or how hard it has been to put out the first issue of a forum like this, but I won't. Instead, I'd rather focus on some of the work that has been submitted for your enjoyment this time around. Surprisingly enough, we have received submissions from a vast number of students on campus, students from other campuses, and faculty here and elsewhere.

Since this is our first undertaking, the pieces …

Passalidae: State Of Larval Taxonomy With Description Of New World Species, Jack C. Schuster Sep 1992

Passalidae: State Of Larval Taxonomy With Description Of New World Species, Jack C. Schuster

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Larvae of 12 New World species of Passalidae are described and 7 species redescribed, bringing the total number of species described to 134 worldwide. A key is provided for all New World genera. Basic setal pattern differences differentiate New World Passalini from Proculini, with the latter tribe showing 2 basic groups of genera. Some exceptions to these basic patterns suggest possible nomenclatural changes.

Se describen larvas de 12 especies de Passalidae del Nuevo Mundo y se redescriben 7 mas, dando un total de 134 especies descritas mundialmente. Se presenta una clave para todos los generos del Nuevo Mundo. Diferencias basicas …

Alaska Justice Forum ; Vol. 9, No. 3 (Fall 1992), N. E. Schafer, Melissa S. Green, N/A Bureau Of Justice Statistics

Vols 01-10 (1977-1994)

The Fall 1992 issue of the Alaska Justice Forum presents population figures for prisoners, probationers, parolees, and community corrections residents under jurisdiction of the Alaska Department of Corrections from February 1980 to September 1992. The Bureau of Justice Statistics examines characteristics of persons in local jails arrested or convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI), finding that more than half the persons in local jails charged with DWI in 1989 had prior sentences to incarceration for DWI offenses. Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) statistics from the FBI for the first six months of 1992 show a three percent increase in violent crime …

Field Calibration Of A Transient Model For Broiler Misting, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Robert W. Bottcher, Shu Hui Zhang Sep 1992

Field Calibration Of A Transient Model For Broiler Misting, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Robert W. Bottcher, Shu Hui Zhang

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A transient model to predict temperature within a tunnel ventilated broiler house during misting is developed. The model is calibrated with field data to obtain steady-state constants; transient predictions are compared to measured temperatures during cyclic misting for two different size birds. Measured temperatures during cyclic misting are shown to swing between steady-state asymptotes predicted from the model. Transient response of the model was faster than measured temperature data, in part due to temperature sensor dynamic response. The model predicts the length-wise temperature profile within the building during misting, and can be used to investigate alternate misting strategies and designs. …

Shifted X-Ray Photoelectron Peak In Molecular-Beam Epitaxial Gaas Grown At 200 Degrees C, David C. Look, J. T. Grant, J. R. Sizelove Sep 1992

Shifted X-Ray Photoelectron Peak In Molecular-Beam Epitaxial Gaas Grown At 200 Degrees C, David C. Look, J. T. Grant, J. R. Sizelove

Physics Faculty Publications

X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopic results show that molecular beam epitaxial GaAs grown at 200 °C has a reduced effective surface potential energy, about 0.5 eV, compared with the usual 0.7 eV. A Poisson analysis of the data, using parameters from Hall effect and absorption measurements, requires that the Fermi‐level‐controlling defect in this material must have a significantly lower activation energy than that of EL2, an unexpected result.

Critical Theory And The Pragmatist Challenge, Dmitri N. Shalin Sep 1992

Critical Theory And The Pragmatist Challenge, Dmitri N. Shalin

Sociology Faculty Research

Habermas's theory breaks with the Continental tradition that has denigrated pragmatism as an Anglo-Saxon philosophy subservient to technocratic capitalism. While Habermas deftly uses pragmatist insights into communicative rationality and democratic ethos, he shows little sensitivity to other facets of pragmatism. This article argues that incorporating the pragmatist perspective on experience and indeterminacy brings a corrective to the emancipatory agenda championed by critical theorists. The pragmatist alternative to the theory of communicative action is presented, with the discussion centering around the following themes: disembodied reason versus embodied reasonableness, determinate being versus indeterminate reality, discursive truth versus pragmatic certainty, rational consensus versus …
