Gender Neutral, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Regardless of your preference, you should be aware that the use of "he" as a universal gender pronoun now is controversial, and your reader probably will follow only one of two very divergent ideologies. Therefore, fall back on a primary rule of persuasive writing: avoid any words or structures that alienate your rader or distract from your message.

Koprak, John Siekierka, C. Shirley Lin, Richard Harrison, Tonya Sewell, Victoria M. Kindt, Thomas R. Beattie, Matthew Wyvratt, Nolan H. Sigal

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

FK-506 inhibits Ca2+-dependent transcription of lymphokine genes in T cells, and thereby acts as a powerful immunosuppressant. However, its potential therapeutic applications may be seriously limited by several side effects, including nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. At present, it is unclear whether these immunosuppressive and toxic effects result from interference with rehted biochemical processes. FK-506 is known to interact with FK-binding protein-12 (FKBP-12), an abundant cytosolic protein with cis.trans peptidyl-prolyl isomerase activity (PPlase) activity. Because rapamycin (RAP) similarly binds to FKBP-12, although it acts in a manner different from FK-506, by inhibiting T cell responses to lymphokines, such an interaction with FKBP-12 …

Population Estimates Of Kea In Arthur's Pass National Park, Alan B. Bond, Judy Diamond Sep 1992

Population Estimates Of Kea In Arthur's Pass National Park, Alan B. Bond, Judy Diamond

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

The population dynamics of a local group of Kea (Nestor notabilis) was studied at a refuse dump in Arthur's Pass National Park over the course of three successive summers. The mean number of buds that foraged at the dump during the summer was estimated as 20 juveniles, 10 subadults, and 36 adults. An average of 11% of these birds were females. The number of adults was quite stable across years. The total population of Kea in this area was estimated to be between 88 and 119, or in the order of 0.018 to 0.040 buds per hectare. Mortality …

A Strategic Management Perspective On Host Country Structure Of Multinational Enterprises, Stephen Tallman Sep 1992

A Strategic Management Perspective On Host Country Structure Of Multinational Enterprises, Stephen Tallman

Management Faculty Publications

This article proposes that the oligopoly power and internalization models of the multinational enterprise should be reviewed in light of the newly developing resource-based model of strategy and managerial decision-making models of strategic management. The perspective described here suggests that strategy-making under conditions of uncertainty and the drive to gain competitive advantage from deployment of firm-specific resources are important issues in the internalization decision of the MNE in a host market. The role of transaction cost efficiency in generating subsidiary governance structures is redefined to be compatible with the demands of these additional considerations of the multinational strategic manager.

An Additional Nebraska Record Of Common Eider?, W. Ross Silcock Sep 1992

An Additional Nebraska Record Of Common Eider?, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

An "Iowa" record of Common Eider to date has apparently not been considered as a Nebraska record (Johnsgard 1980, Bray et al. 1986). A note was published by Philip Dumont in 1934 (Wilson Bulletin 46: 203), describing a bird that was shot by a hunter on the Missouri River below Sioux City, Iowa on November 1, 1901--Dumont cited measurements that established the specimen as an example of Somateria mollissima v. nigra, the western race of Common Eider. Dumont wrote that "this record might be claimed as Nebraskan as well as Iowan", a statement noted by Tate (1969) on …

New Records Of Bruchidae (Coleoptera) From The Dominican Republic, John M. Kingsolver

Insecta Mundi

Only five species of Bruchidae have been recorded from the Dominican Republic D.R) per se although records exist for “Hispaniola” and Haiti. Collections made during a recent trip (1992) by R. Turnbow and M.C. Thomas have added data for five additional species, one of which is a new West Indian record whereas the other three are range extensions of species previously known from the West Indies. Geographical ranges for each species are briefly indicated.

The Effects Of Automation On Crew Coordination In The Corporate Cockpit, Yves P. Koning Sep 1992

The Effects Of Automation On Crew Coordination In The Corporate Cockpit, Yves P. Koning

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The implementation of automated systems in the cockpit has somewhat changed pilots' working environment. The present study, which focus is on corporate aviation, looks at the influence automation has on crew coordination.

A questionnaire including both Likert scale and open-ended questions was sent to 880 qualified pilots. A descriptive as well as an inferential analysis of the data provided by the Likert scale questions was conducted. Out of the five variables tested, the only one to generate any significant differences (p

Overall, pilots pointed out the importance of verbal communication and cockpit resource management training, emphasizing the strong need for …

Practical Guidelines For Dna-Based Testing In Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1, Catharina Larsson, Magnus Nordenskjold, Britt Skogseid, Kjell Oberg

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) is an autosomal dominant predisposition to neoplastic lesions of the parathyroid glands, the neuroendocrine pancreas, and the anterior pituitary gland. The predisposing genetic defect was localized to the long arm of chromosome 11 by genetic linkage analysis in three affected families. By analyzing six MEN 1 families with 14 DNA marker systems located close to the MEN 1 gene, we have developed a method to identify carriers of the MEN 1 predisposition. We describe practical aspects of such DNA-based diagnostic procedures.
