The Formative Years Of A Saint: Vincent De Paul: 1595–1617, Stafford Poole C.M.
The Formative Years Of A Saint: Vincent De Paul: 1595–1617, Stafford Poole C.M.
Vincentian Studies
This investigation of Vincent de Paul’s formative years reveals his humanity and shows his sanctity was achieved slowly, not as the result of dramatic events as tradition holds. The first part of this work covers the period between his schooling in Dax and his 1605 disappearance. The second explores the Tunisian captivity. The third consists of the time between his arrival in Paris and the mission at Folleville. The main assertions follow. Vincent probably was ordained earlier than the prescribed age of twenty-four. Such irregular ordinations were common at the time. Contrary to tradition, he did contest the possession of …

Interferences Of N-Chloroorganic Compounds In Free Chlorine Determination, Sushma H. Gandhi
Interferences Of N-Chloroorganic Compounds In Free Chlorine Determination, Sushma H. Gandhi
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Various N-chlorinated organic compounds give positive responses to the analytical methods used to determine free chlorine. The present work quantifies interferences due to N-chloroisoleucine, N-chloropiperidine and N-chloro-2-methylbutyraldiminein the free chlorine determination by amperometry. These N-chloroorganic compounds were also studied for the recovery in response by the indicator electrode in amperometric titrimetry. The total chlorine content of the chloroaldimines derived from the chlorination of the amino acids, alanine, glutamic acid, glycine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, serine, valine, and those of dipeptides, alanylvaline and glycylleucine, was determined by amperometry and DPD-FAS titrimetry. The two methods were compared and evaluated with respect to recovery …

Commodity Exchanges And The Privatization Of The Agricultural Sector In The Commonwealth Of Independent States—Needed Steps In Creating A Market Economy, Alexander Belozertsev, Jerry W. Markham
Law and Contemporary Problems
Pre-revolutionary commodities exchanges in Russia and their extinguishment by the Bolsheviks are examined, and the role thereafter by Soviet central planners in the distribution, import and export of agricultural commodities is described. It is argued that the privatization process in the CIS must include incentives for the development of an exchange system for agricultural goods.

The U.S. National Parasite Collection will complete its first century of service to the field of animal parasitology in 1992. A brief history of the collection and a description of current policies on deposit and loan of specimens are provided. The collection, started in 1892 by Charles Wardell Stiles and Albert Hassall, now includes several constituent collections: The USNM Helminthological Collection, The USDA Parasite Collection, The Hoffman-Bangham Collection of Parasites of Freshwater Fish, and The Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Diseases Study Collection of Parasites of White-tailed Deer. Parasites Of The Extinct Shasta Ground Sloth, Nothrotheriops Shastensis, In Rampart Cave, Arizona, Gerald D. Schmidt, Donald W. Duszynski, Paul S. Martin
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Of 7 dissected dung balls of the extinct Shasta ground sloth (Edentata) from Rampart Cave, Arizona, 4 (57%) were found to contain nematode juveniles, helminth eggs, and/or coccidian oocysts. One dung ball was radiocarbon dated at 10,500 ± 180 yr, about the time of ground sloth extinction. It is supposed that the parasites also are extinct. Agamofilaria oxyura n. sp. is proposed for first-stage juveniles of an oxyurid. These juveniles measured 13-20 x 126-198 (16.8 x 159) μm. Strongyloides shastensis n. sp. is reported as first-stage juveniles, some of which clearly are molting. These juvenile worms were 23-27 …

Notable Vincentians (6): Paul Bedjan, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Paul Bedjan was a nineteenth-century Vincentian who had been born in the Chaldean (East Syrian) tradition. He abandoned the rite when he entered the Congregation but continued to support Chaldeans through fund raising and publishing. He worked in present-day Iran and Europe. He founded the Catholic Press of Urmya; the press was destroyed in 1883, but he published thirty-five works from that year until 1912. Aside from a Chaldean breviary and a Chaldean missal, these included publications on theology, piety, and literature, among other topics. He is best known for the breviary and for seven volumes on the martyrs and …
