Labor Earnings, Discrimination, And The Racial Composition Of Jobs, Barry T. Hirsch, Edward J. Schumacher Oct 1992

Labor Earnings, Discrimination, And The Racial Composition Of Jobs, Barry T. Hirsch, Edward J. Schumacher

Health Care Administration Faculty Research

This paper examines the effect of the racial composition of labor markets on wage rates and the racial wage gap. The wage rates of white as well as black workers are significantly lower in industry- occupation-regional groups with high densities of black workers, while the racial wage gap does not vary systematically with respect to racial density. Interpretation of racial gap estimates can be sensitive to inclusion of a racial density variable, particularly in sparse specifications. An explanation for the wagedensity relationship cannot be established, but results are most consistent with a quality sorting explanation and, to a lesser extent, …

Changes In Intracellular Chloride During Osmotic Stress And L-Alanine Uptake In Mouse Hepatocytes, Kening Wang Oct 1992

Changes In Intracellular Chloride During Osmotic Stress And L-Alanine Uptake In Mouse Hepatocytes, Kening Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A stable intracellular ionic environment is necessary for hepatocytes to function normally. Thus, during hypotonic shock or L-alanine uptake, hepatocytes swell and then exhibit a regulatory volume decrease (RVD), which comprises an increase in K$\sp+$ conductance (G$\sb{\rm K}$), an increased K$\sp+$ efflux, and a hyperpolarization of transmembrane potential (V$\sb{\rm m}$). Since hepatocyte intracellular Cl$\sp-$ has been demonstrated to distribute passively with V$\sb{\rm m}$, this study is designed to test the hypothesis that the hypotonic shock- or L-alanine uptake-induced hyperpolarization of V$\sb{\rm m}$ might provide an electromotive force for the efflux of hepatocyte intracellular Cl$\sp-$, which in turn would contribute osmotically …

The Effect Of Additives On The Nucleation And Growth Of Copper Onto Stainless Steel Cathodes, M. Sun, Thomas J. O'Keefe Oct 1992

The Effect Of Additives On The Nucleation And Growth Of Copper Onto Stainless Steel Cathodes, M. Sun, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A potentiostatic technique has been used to study the effects of chloride ion, glue, and thiourea on the initial electrodeposition of copper. A stainless steel (AISI 304) rotating disc electrode (RDE) with an electrolyte containing 40 g/1 Cu2+ and 180 g/1 H2SO4 at 40 °C was employed. The current transients from the potential step measurements for the additive-free electrolyte could be fitted to a model that assumed progressive nucleation followed by growth of three-dimensional (3-D) centers under diffusion control. The growth mechanism and the type of nuclei were also confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of …

Corporate Tax Reform: The Key To International Competitiveness, Ann L. Hardman

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Note responds to "Integration of the Individual and Corporate Tax Systems: Taxing Business Income Once," a study the United States Department of the Treasury released on January 6, 1992. This Note explores some of the issues and concerns of integration and considers arguments in support of and against the United States system of taxation. The latter portion of this Note addresses the relationship between international economics and integration, focusing on the potential for international competitive disadvantage under the classical tax system. The author concludes that Congress should read the Treasury's study as a legislative proposal and act upon it …

Fluid Inclusion Studies Of The Morefield Pegmatite Amelia County, Virginia, John Richard Smerekanicz Oct 1992

Fluid Inclusion Studies Of The Morefield Pegmatite Amelia County, Virginia, John Richard Smerekanicz

OES Theses and Dissertations

The Morefield Pegmatite is a planar, nearly vertical body situated in Grenville age gneisses and schists in the southeast Piedmont of Virginia. It consists of a mineralogically simple albite-quartz outer zone and a texturally and mineralogically complex inner zone of microcline-topaz-quartz, with trace amounts of rare-element minerals. Fluid inclusions in samples of quartz, topaz, beryl, spessartite and albite that span the length, width and depth of both zones can be classified by chemical composition into two main groups: H2O-rich solutions and CO2- H2O -rich fluids. The H2O -rich inclusions consist of H …

Retroactive Application Of The Civil Rights Act Of 1991, Kristine N. Mcalister Oct 1992

Retroactive Application Of The Civil Rights Act Of 1991, Kristine N. Mcalister

Vanderbilt Law Review

On November 21, 1991, President Bush signed the Civil Rights Act of 1991 (the "Act") into law. The Act contained a general section stating that its provisions should take effect upon enactment. What the Act did not do, however, is indicate whether it should apply to cases pending at the time of its enactment. Since the Act is more favorable to plaintiffs than was its predecessor, plaintiffs whose cases were pending at the time of its enactment have attempted to amend their complaints to benefit from the new Act's provisions. Congress's failure to indicate whether the Act should apply to …

Choice Reaction Time As A Function Of Set Size And Signal Frequency, Barbara M. Herzing Oct 1992

Choice Reaction Time As A Function Of Set Size And Signal Frequency, Barbara M. Herzing

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This research was conducted in two experiments. The first experiment assessed whether set size for the negative and positive sets affected reaction time during a visual scanning task. The effects of signal frequency on these relationships were assessed in the second experiment. It was hypothesized that as set size increased, reaction time would increase. In addition, as signal frequency increased, it was hypothesized that reaction time would decrease. In the first experiment, 12 groups of 10 subjects each were tested varying the number of stimuli for the positive and negative sets. The second experiment tested 18 groups by varying the …

Plankton Transport Patterns And Residence Times Around A Tall Seamount: Simulation Results, Dorlisa Louise Hommel Oct 1992

Plankton Transport Patterns And Residence Times Around A Tall Seamount: Simulation Results, Dorlisa Louise Hommel

OES Theses and Dissertations

A semi-spectral primitive equation circulation model was used to simulate flow over an isolated gaussian seamount. Model configuration was such that a Taylor Cap was generated in the flow over the seamount. Arrays of 100 drifters were released in the simulated flow fields at several depths (50, 100, 200, and 400 m) both upstream and over the seamount. For several experiments vertical behaviors were imposed on the drifters to simulate zooplankton migration patterns. The drifter simulations extended for three months. Drifter transport patterns were determined by the initial release position of the drifter relative to the Taylor Cap as well …

An Experimental Study For The Effect Of Specimen Size On Shear Behavior Of Granular Materials, Clifton Linwood Parker Iv Oct 1992

An Experimental Study For The Effect Of Specimen Size On Shear Behavior Of Granular Materials, Clifton Linwood Parker Iv

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An experimental study was undertaken to look into the effect of specimen size on the volumetric behavior of granular triaxial specimens. It was hypothesized that the specimen preparation mold creates a unique particle arrangement near the perimeter of the specimen and thus, for smaller specimen diameter relative to the particle size, it will exhibit a greater effect of the unique particle arrangement on the volumetric behavior. particles was used A single distribution of spherical glass throughout the testing. The tested specimens were 3.6, 2.8, 2.0, 1.4, 1.0, and 0.6 inches in diameter with a fixed two to one specimen height …

A Multivariate Characterization Of Assemblages Of Planktonic Mysids Decapods And Sergestids In The Chesapeake Bay Mouth Area, John Charles Seibel Oct 1992

A Multivariate Characterization Of Assemblages Of Planktonic Mysids Decapods And Sergestids In The Chesapeake Bay Mouth Area, John Charles Seibel

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

This study is the first to focus on the assemblages of the planktonic mysids, decapods, and sergestids found in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The assemblages of these organisms in the lower Chesapeake Bay and nearby shelf were characterized using three different statistical approaches, and the methods used were evaluated for their effectiveness at delineating ecologically meaningful assemblages. Three stations were sampled across the Chesapeake mouth and one offshore, with oblique and neuston net tows. Twenty-seven larval stages, representing at least 23 species, were found in sufficient numbers to be analyzed statistically. The statistical approaches were each based upon a different …

Elastic Buckling Of Stiffened Composite Curved Panels, Navin R. R. Jaunky Oct 1992

Elastic Buckling Of Stiffened Composite Curved Panels, Navin R. R. Jaunky

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Continuous filament grid-stiffened structure is a stiffening concept that combines structural efficiency and damage tolerance. However, buckle resistant design of such structures using finite elements methods is expensive and time consuming. An analytical model of a general grid stiffened structure is developed using a smeared theory with a first order shear deformation theory to account for transverse shear flexibilities. The solution for buckling of a simply supported panel subjected to combined loading is developed using energy method and a Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The smeared theory results are compared with finite element results. The results smeared theory compare well with the finite …

A Phenomenology Of Textuality, Alessandro Tomasi Oct 1992

A Phenomenology Of Textuality, Alessandro Tomasi

Institute for the Humanities Theses

This thesis introduces a new meaning of the word "textuality" based on its etymology, as a "woven thing. I reject the notion of isolatable entities that we call "words" and argue that language presents itself, in our experience, as "textual." In this sense, "textuality" is not limited to written texts, but it applies to every linguistic media: thinking, writing, and speaking.

I attempt a distinction between "textuality" and "contextuality" which allows me to isolate this phenomenon, "textuality," and to proceed with a phenomenological description of its features and structures. Among these, I describe to some length what I call "diesis," …

The Effect Of Contacts On The Performance Of Electron-Beam Controlled Gaas And Diamond Switches, Michael Kevin Kennedy Oct 1992

The Effect Of Contacts On The Performance Of Electron-Beam Controlled Gaas And Diamond Switches, Michael Kevin Kennedy

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The performance of GaAs and diamond as electron-beam controlled closing and opening switches has been studied. An emphasis has been placed on the effect of contacts on the current-voltage characteristics. The two materials studied were GaAs and diamond. Using the same semi-insulating GaAs wafer as a source of material, a bulk device and a p-i-n device have been fabricated and compared. The asymmetry of the pin diode allows operation at higher voltage because of the ability to suppress the lock-on effect. Whereas GaAs was ionized through cathodoluminescence; diamond, in the form of thin films, has been directly ionized by the …

Analysis Of Heat Pump Cycles Using Thermodynamic Equations Of State, Stephen C. Ericson Oct 1992

Analysis Of Heat Pump Cycles Using Thermodynamic Equations Of State, Stephen C. Ericson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this study, thermal performance of heat pump cycles is analyzed by employing several equations of state. The analysis presented here is particularly useful for applications where refrigerant properties need to be calculated from a thermodynamic equation of state. Such a situation, for example, would arise during a long-term numerical simulation of a solar-assisted heat pump system. In these cases, the direct use of thermodynamic property tables of refrigerants would not be possible in a computational procedure. The approach of using equations of state to predict thermodynamic properties is also useful for applications where new refrigerants or blends of refrigerants …

Transient Simulation Of A Trombe Wall Passive Heating System Coupled To A Thermally Stratified Room, Ali Saleh Kheireddine Oct 1992

Transient Simulation Of A Trombe Wall Passive Heating System Coupled To A Thermally Stratified Room, Ali Saleh Kheireddine

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Thermal performance of a Trombe-wall space heating system has been studied numerically for one-day and multiple-day periods. This study analyzes the system performance by simultaneously considering the coupled nature of the channel convection, wall heat conduction and transient room energy balance. A computer program has been written and implemented to assess the effects of system parameters, weather conditions and peak temperature control strategies on the system performance.

The system performance is influenced by such system parameters as the storage wall thickness, channel width and the temperature stratification in the room. Increasing the wall thickness decreases the temperature swings considerably, but …

State-Selective Capture In Collisions Of Protons With Noble Gases, M. Schulz, D. M. Blakenship, S. W. Bross, A. D. Gaus, Timothy J. Gay, W. Htwe, J. T. Park, J. L. Peacher Oct 1992

State-Selective Capture In Collisions Of Protons With Noble Gases, M. Schulz, D. M. Blakenship, S. W. Bross, A. D. Gaus, Timothy J. Gay, W. Htwe, J. T. Park, J. L. Peacher

Timothy J. Gay Publications

We have measured coincidences between neutral H atoms and Lyman-α photons for collisions between 50-keV protons and noble gases as a function of the projectile scattering angle. The coincidences are dominated by capture to the 2p state of the projectile. While the total cross sections depend strongly on the target, the shape of the angular distribution of the differential cross sections was found to depend only weakly on that parameter. The data indicate that electrons are captured predominantly from the outermost shell of the target atom for the collision systems studied here.
