Tourism Management In The Galapagos Islands: A Social Carrying Capacity Study, Claudia Anne Reinhart
Open Access Master's Theses
Social carrying capacity is crucial to the long term survival of a tourist destination. The purpose of this thesis is to help tourism managers in the Galapagos Islands understand the critical factors related to social carrying capacity in order to maximize the value of the resource. It includes: a literature review of social carrying capacity studies, a description of the Galapagos Islands, tourism, and a description of visitors and their levels of satisfaction based on two surveys.
Visitors to the Galápagos Islands are all very different, and the results of the surveys demonstrate the wide range of visitors. As was …
Teachers' Training, Knowledge, And Attitudes Towards Mainstreaming Behaviorally Disordered Students In Regular Classrooms, Christine K. Chaille '92
Teachers' Training, Knowledge, And Attitudes Towards Mainstreaming Behaviorally Disordered Students In Regular Classrooms, Christine K. Chaille '92
Honors Projects
Public Law 94-142 requires that special education students be placed in "the least restrictive school environment" possible and that teachers who work with special needs students in regular classrooms receive training and help from special educators. According to Vandivier & Vandivier (1981), teachers have reservations about including children with "particular types" of disabilities in regular classes, and Mooney & Algozzine (1978) reported that teachers consider "socially defiant" behaviors to be more disturbing than those associated with learning disabilities. This study was designed to determine the relationship between experienced classroom teachers' willingness to accept behaviorally disordered (BD) students in regular classrooms …
The Law As King And The King As Law: Is A President Immune From Criminal Prosecution Before Impeachment?, Eric M. Freedman
The Law As King And The King As Law: Is A President Immune From Criminal Prosecution Before Impeachment?, Eric M. Freedman
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The frequent investigations examining the possibility of executive misconduct suggest the country eventually will have to face a major and hitherto unresolved issue: May Presidents and Vice Presidents be indicted while in office?
Part I reviews what is known about the history of the issue at the time of the adoption of the Constitution. It brings to light the previously unremarked fact that there was explicit disagreement on this point among members of the founding generation, and concludes that we must base our judgment on other considerations.
Part II examines national historical practice since the ratification of the Constitution, and …
A Social Problem-Solving Curriculum For Mildly Handicapped And Handicapped And Behaviorally At-Risk Middle School Students, Ellen Gertz
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed in response to the increasing numbers of student behavior problems and subsequent suspension of mildly handicapped and at-risk middle school students. The goal was to implement a group intervention program teaching cognitive behavioral strategics to improve interpersonal problem-solving skills, as well as provide alternatives to current school disciplinary procedures.
The writer combined the video-assisted, cognitive behavioral “Think First” program designed by Dr. James Larson with a student court system to improve social competence, develop self-management and problem-solving techniques. Instructional approaches included group problem-solving, self-reporting, modeling and role play. Training emphasized self-instruction for impulse control, finding alternative …

Development Of A Prototype Pavement Management System For Municipal Maintained Roads And The Integration With A Geographic Information System, Olumide Adedamola Adeyinka
Open Access Master's Theses
A pavement management system (PMS) is a set of tools or methods that assist decision makers in finding optimum strategies for providing and maintaining pavements in a serviceable condition over a given period of time at the least cost. Without such a routine pavement maintenance program, roads require more frequent reconstruction, thereby costing the state and local governments additional dollars.
In this study, a prototype PMS for municipal maintained roads was developed for a typical township in Rhode Island, the Town of South Kingston. Based on the results of a questionnaire survey and comparative analysis, Micro PAVER was selected as …

Bispectral Analysis Of Second-Order Nonlinear Ocean Waves, Zhaoqing Yang
Bispectral Analysis Of Second-Order Nonlinear Ocean Waves, Zhaoqing Yang
Open Access Master's Theses
To fully characterize a non-Gaussian random process, in addition to the ordinary power spectrum, higher order spectra are also needed. In the present study, the concentration is on the bispectrum of second-order nonlinear random wave elevation (a non-Gaussian process) at deep water site. Two approaches for calculating the wave bispectrum are included: analytical approach and simulated approach. The analytical approach developed in this study is different from that used by Hasselmann et al. (1963). The simulated approach involves first simulating non-Gaussian wave signals and then estimating the bispectrum from the wave signals. Under the sea state described by a Pierson-Moskowitz …

Demographic And Background Characteristics Of Learning Disabled Adults, Pamela S. Wiegartz '92
Demographic And Background Characteristics Of Learning Disabled Adults, Pamela S. Wiegartz '92
Honors Projects
Although learning disabilities (LD) are widely discussed in the literature, many aspects of the field remain ambiguous and confusing. The validity of research on LD is compromised by the use of discrepant definitions. These incompatible and often insufficient criteria also make it nearly impossible to draw generalizable conclusions from many studies. Further , there has been surprisingly little research done describing demographic characteristics of the LD population, with most of these studies focusing on children. Prior studies have indicated correlations between learning disabilities and such factors as handedness, gender, prior family history of the disorder and birth trauma. The present …

Progress In The Development Of A Video-Based Wind Farm Simulation Technique, Aj Robotham
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The progress in the development of a video-based wind farm simulation technique is reviewed. While improvements have been achieved in the quality of the composite picture created by combining computer generated animation sequences of wind turbines with background scenes of the wind farm site, extending the technique to include camera movements has proved troublesome.
Application Of Image Analysis Techniques To Satellite Cloud Motion Tracking, King Shing Albert Lau
Application Of Image Analysis Techniques To Satellite Cloud Motion Tracking, King Shing Albert Lau
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Cloud motion wind (CMW) determination requires tracking of individual cloud targets. This is achieved by first clustering and then tracking each cloud cluster. Ideally, different cloud clusters correspond to diiferent pressure levels. Two new clustering techniques have been developed for the identification of cloud types in multi-spectral satellite imagery. The first technique is the Global-Local clustering algorithm. It is a cascade of a histogram clustering algorithm and a dynamic clustering algorithm. The histogram clustering algorithm divides the multi-spectral histogram into'non-overlapped regions, and these regions are used to initialise the dynamic clustering algorithm. The dynamic clustering algorithm assumes clusters have a …

The Design Of Active Resistors And Transductors In A Cmos Technology, Pak Kwong Chan
The Design Of Active Resistors And Transductors In A Cmos Technology, Pak Kwong Chan
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis surveys linearisation techniques for implementing monolithic MOS active resistors and transconductors, and investigates the design of linear tunable resistors and transconductors. Improving linearity and tunability in the presence of non-ideal factors such as bulk modulation, mobility-degradation effects and mismatch of transistors is a principal objective. A family of new non-saturation-mode resistors and two novel saturation-mode transconductors are developed. Where possible, approximate analytical expressions are derived to explain the principles of operation. Performance comparisons of the new structures are made with other well-known circuits and their relative advantages and disadvantages evaluated. Experimental and simulation results are presented which validate …
Appeals On The Merits, Terence G. Ison
Appeals On The Merits, Terence G. Ison
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article deals with the limitations of judicial review and the possibilities of its augmentation or replacement by a regime of appeals on the merits. The author questions some assumptions that are commonly made about appellate structures. He criticizes the "broad-brush approach" and warns that there is no panacea. The article explains why any broad regime of appeals on the merits from tribunals to courts of general jurisdiction is not an available option, and it discusses alternative structures of appeals to tribunals. Finally, it explains why it would be irresponsible to propose any appellate structure covering any substantive subject except …
The Efficacy Of The Tort System And Its Alternatives: A Review Of Empirical Evidence, Don Dewees, Michael J. Trebilcock
The Efficacy Of The Tort System And Its Alternatives: A Review Of Empirical Evidence, Don Dewees, Michael J. Trebilcock
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This paper reviews the existing empirical evidence on the efficacy of the tort system and alternatives to it. The evidence is evaluated against three normative goals: deterrence, corrective justice, and distributive justice. Empirical evidence relating to five major categories of accidents is reviewed: automobile accidents, medical malpractice, product related accidents, environmental injuries, and workplace injuries. In each case, the paper proceeds by reviewing empirical evidence on the deterrence and compensatory properties of the tort system, and then reviews parallel bodies of evidence on regulatory or penal alternatives and on compensatory alternatives to the tort system. The paper concludes that the …

The Relationship Between Actual And Perceived Aerobic Fitness And Self-Concept, Matthew Bruce Green
The Relationship Between Actual And Perceived Aerobic Fitness And Self-Concept, Matthew Bruce Green
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Researchers have suggested that improvements in aerobic fitness lead to improved self-concept (Collingwood, 1972; Folkins & Sime,.1981; Hanson & Nedde, 1974; Hatfield, Vaccaro, & Benedict, 1985; Hilyer & Mitchell, 1979; McGowan, Jarman, & Pedersen, 1974; Percy, Dziuban, & Martin, 1981; Schumaker, Small, & Wood, 1986). It has yet to be determined, however, how aerobic fitness is linked to positive self-concept. Other researchers have found that perceptions of physical fitness are correlated with self-concept (Leonardson, 1977; Riley, 1983; Young, 1985). Perceptions of aerobic fitness and how it relates to self-concept, however, have yet to be specifically studied. Using measures of self-concept, …
