Restructuring In State Departments Of Education: An Analysis Of Structural Evolution., Harriet Maxey Deel Jan 1992

Restructuring In State Departments Of Education: An Analysis Of Structural Evolution., Harriet Maxey Deel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to address the nature of structural changes evolving in state departments of education which are perceived by chief state school officers as useful in implementing educational reforms. As a context for the inquiry on structural evolution, the study examined restatement of mission and goals in response to the reform movement. Examination of structural elements related to five areas: (a) reduction in vertical layers in the organization hierarchy, (b) adoption of flexible, cooperative roles, (c) decentralization of decision making, (d) delivery models for training and technical assistance to local education agencies and schools, and (e) …

Foot-In-The-Door And Cancer Prevention, Danielle J. Dolin Jan 1992

Foot-In-The-Door And Cancer Prevention, Danielle J. Dolin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Foot-in-the-door (FITD) technique was applied to a health care setting to determine if this compliance method could be used toward increasing cancer prevention rates. Self-perception was used as the theoretical explanation for the FITD technique. Subjects were mall merchants attending the setting during two days of a scheduled area health fair. Two groups were run. One cell received both a first and second request (the FITD cell), while the control cell received only the second request. As expected, statistically significant effects indicated higher compliance rates of the FITD group. Attitude measures concerning the general topic of prevention and the topic …

School-Based Community Service: A Descriptive Analysis Of Four High School Programs., David Richard Procter Jan 1992

School-Based Community Service: A Descriptive Analysis Of Four High School Programs., David Richard Procter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study evaluated the panegyrical claims for high school-based community service programs. Four high school programs from three different states were selected to represent public, private-parochial, single and mixed gender, urban, suburban, and rural orientations. A repeated measure quantitative research design was developed and implemented as well as a qualitative study involving student and teacher/coordinator interviews. A survey instrument consisting of three scales--Social Isolation, Powerlessness, and Political Efficacy--was administered to experimental groups of student volunteers in each of four schools before and after programs involving student participation in community activities. The time periods between pre and post-tests ranged from one …

Countertransference Reactions Toward Incest Victims: A Qualitative Investigation., Susan Carol Bates Jan 1992

Countertransference Reactions Toward Incest Victims: A Qualitative Investigation., Susan Carol Bates

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This was a qualitative study investigating countertransference reactions toward incest victims and how these reactions impacted the therapist. Two caucasian male and two caucasian female therapists were participants. Their level of education varied from masters' degrees (n = 3) to a doctoral degree (n = 1). Years of experience ranged from 5 to 25 years. Each participant agreed to an in-depth interview, to maintain a journal for three months recording reactions toward two current sexual abuse clients, and to an exit interview. Qualitative analyses employing recommendations by Hycner (1985) were utilized. Results described a diversity of reactions and management of …

Coanda Effect Jet Around A Cylinder With An Interacting Adjacent Surface., Randolph Allen Churchill Jan 1992

Coanda Effect Jet Around A Cylinder With An Interacting Adjacent Surface., Randolph Allen Churchill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The effects of placing a plane solid surface in close proximity to a Coanda effect jet turning over a cylindrical surface are investigated to help judge the possible application of this type of jet to manufacturing line processes. The Coanda jet is proposed as a coating control mechanism for fluidic coatings on sheets or a particulate removal device. A Coanda jet placed close to a surface will develop a strong tangential flow that will shear by viscous effects and pressure gradients. A turbulent k-{dollar}\\varepsilon{dollar} finite element model, developed in FIDAP, is presented that studies the effects of cylinder-sheet separation distance …

Acquisition Of Word Concept In Two Kindergarten Classrooms., Elwin Leonard Dickerson Jan 1992

Acquisition Of Word Concept In Two Kindergarten Classrooms., Elwin Leonard Dickerson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explored how differing teaching methodologies affect word concept development during the first semester of kindergarten. Comparing fourteen kindergarten students matched on age, concepts about print, cognitive level and home factors in kindergartens differing in teaching philosophy, the researcher administered tasks to assess development of concept of word. Those tasks structured to assess word concept development, were administered every other week. Clay's "Concepts About Print" (CAP) task provided the pre- and post test assessment. The seven students exposed to a holistic philosophy and seven students exposed to a skill building philosophy demonstrated no significant differences when their word concept …

The Relationship Between Food Aid And Food Production In Sub-Saharan Africa., Saba Momodou Jallow Jan 1992

The Relationship Between Food Aid And Food Production In Sub-Saharan Africa., Saba Momodou Jallow

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between food aid and food production in thirty-six Sub-Saharan African countries over an eleven year period. Local food production was used as a dependent variable in a pooled cross sectional time series statistical model with food aid, GNP per capita, population, urbanization, literacy rates, regime type, and rainfall used as explanatory variables. The statistical model was supplemented with four cases pertaining to agricultural food policies and politics in Botswana, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Zimbabwe. Both internal and external constraints have contributed to the food crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa. The relationship …

The Relationships Among Teachers' Immediacy Behaviors, Credibility, And Social Style And Students' Motivation And Learning: Comparisons Among Cultures., Catherine Ann Thompson Jan 1992

The Relationships Among Teachers' Immediacy Behaviors, Credibility, And Social Style And Students' Motivation And Learning: Comparisons Among Cultures., Catherine Ann Thompson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent research offers insight concerning the roles of teachers' verbal immediacy, nonverbal immediacy, and credibility in American classrooms, but little work has been done to test the universal effects of these constructs. The primary purpose of this research was to extend previous research by comparing in different cultural groups the relationships among students' perceptions of teachers' immediacy, credibility, and social style in relation to students' perceptions of their own motivation and learning. Relationships among students' perceptions of teachers' verbal immediacy, nonverbal immediacy, competence, character, assertiveness, and responsiveness and students' motivation, cognitive learning, affective learning, and behavioral learning as well as …

Prediction And Amelioration Of Acid Mine Drainage., Walter Mark Hart Jan 1992

Prediction And Amelioration Of Acid Mine Drainage., Walter Mark Hart

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two aspects of acid mine drainage (AMD) production were studied on a laboratory scale: the role of leaching, and the effectiveness of phosphate amelioration. The leaching study was based on an assumption of an earlier oxidation/leaching field model: that oxidation is independent of leaching. A SAS program was written which can simultaneously fit all three parameters of this field model. The model was generalized to include the effect of initial sulfate sulfur. A deterministic oxidation/leaching model was developed and applied to two continuous, unsaturated flow trickle bed reactors. First-order leaching rate constants were calculated to be 0.0888 days{dollar}\\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar} for refuse …

Senior Japanese Tourists To Taiwan And Their Marketing Potential: A Case Study, Nai-Chieh Jessie Chen Jan 1992

Senior Japanese Tourists To Taiwan And Their Marketing Potential: A Case Study, Nai-Chieh Jessie Chen

Theses

For decades, Taiwan's tourism industry enjoyed the great number of Japanese visitors until a few years ago, when the growth rate slowed and even declined. This decline was caused by several factors such as rising price, high appreciation of the New Taiwan dollar, inconvenient visa application procedures, limited airline seats, rising public disorder, and strong competition from neighboring countries. With much money to spend the Japanese tourists were the most welcome group to the world tourism industry. The senior (50 years and older) members among them, in increasing quantity and good financial ability, have become even more desirable among the …

Ethnicity And Therapeutic Alliance., Victor M. Huertas Jan 1992

Ethnicity And Therapeutic Alliance., Victor M. Huertas

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The therapeutic alliance, defined as a relationship between the therapist and patient in which they work together in a realistic collaboration based on mutual respect, liking, trust and commitment to the work of the psychotherapeutic treatment,is thought to be an important component of successful therapeutic interventions and may also serve to reduce premature terminations. The concept of therapeutic alliance, however, has not been addressed directly in the ethnic minority literature.Literature pertaining to the psychotherapeutic treatment of ethnic minorities was reviewed with an emphasis on therapeutic alliance.Factors that may influence the development of an adequate therapeutic alliance with ethnic minority patients are identified and discussed. In addition, recommendations …

Apocalypse Next Time?: The Anachronistic Attack On Habeas Corpus/Direct Review Parity, James S. Liebman Jan 1992

Apocalypse Next Time?: The Anachronistic Attack On Habeas Corpus/Direct Review Parity, James S. Liebman

Faculty Scholarship

Today, a district court's habeas corpus review of the constitutionality of a state criminal conviction and the Supreme Court's direct review of the same question are nearly identical. Last Term, in Wright v. West, an otherwise mundane criminal procedure case, the Supreme Court rewrote the question presented to ask whether the parity between federal habeas corpus and direct appellate review should be destroyed. The Court proposed abandoning in habeas corpus an important trait shared by the two modes of review – de novo consideration of legal and mixed legal-factual questions.

To those who value meaningful habeas corpus review, the …

The Relevance Of Coherence, Joseph Raz Jan 1992

The Relevance Of Coherence, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

Coherence is in vogue. Coherence accounts of truth and of knowledge have been in contention for many years. Coherence explanations of morality and of law are a newer breed. I suspect that like so much else in practical philosophy today they owe much of their popularity to John Rawls. His writings on reflective equilibrium, while designed as part of a philosophical strategy which suspends inquiry into the fundamental questions of moral philosophy, had the opposite effect. They inspired much constructive reflection about these questions, largely veering toward coherence as the right interpretation both of reflective equilibrium and of moral philosophy. …

The Political Ecology Of Takeovers: Thoughts On Harmonizing The European Corporate Governance Environment, Ronald J. Gilson Jan 1992

The Political Ecology Of Takeovers: Thoughts On Harmonizing The European Corporate Governance Environment, Ronald J. Gilson

Faculty Scholarship

Economic policy debate in the United States during the 1980s focused on the dynamics of bidder and target tactics in hostile takeovers. Confronted with the largest transactions in business history, financial economists took advantage of developments in econometric techniques to conduct virtually real time studies of the impact on firm value of each new bidder tactic and target defense. For courts and lawyers, hostile takeovers subjected standard features of corporate law to the equivalent of a stress x-ray, revealing previously undetected doctrinal cracks. Congress held seemingly endless hearings on the subject, although managing to enact only relatively innocuous tax penalties …

Minor Changes: Emancipating Children In Modern Times, Carol Sanger, Eleanor Willemsen Jan 1992

Minor Changes: Emancipating Children In Modern Times, Carol Sanger, Eleanor Willemsen

Faculty Scholarship

Parents and their teenage children don't always get along. At some time during adolescent development, parents may turn into embarrassments and teenagers into domestic terrorists. For most families this is a phase. Adolescence is endured, the child accomplishes some degree of separation from parents, and the transition to adulthood advances.

In some families, however, the period is more like a siege than a phase. Conflict may last longer and be more strifeful, more intense. If the family is incapable or unwilling to resolve the tensions, an intractability may set in. In these cases, domestic tranquility seems attainable only when the …

Paradigms Lost: The Blurring Of The Criminal And Civil Law Models – And What Can Be Done About It, John C. Coffee Jr. Jan 1992

Paradigms Lost: The Blurring Of The Criminal And Civil Law Models – And What Can Be Done About It, John C. Coffee Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

Ken Mann's professed goal is to "shrink" the criminal law. To realize this worthy end, he advocates punitive civil sanctions that would largely parallel criminal sanctions, thereby reducing the need to use criminal law in order to achieve punitive purposes. I agree (heartily) with the end he seeks and even more with his general precept that "the criminal law should be reserved for the most damaging wrongs and the most culpable defendants." But I believe that the means he proposes would be counterproductive – and would probably expand, rather than contract, the operative scope of the criminal law as an …

Second-Order Parametrized-Post-Newtonian Lagrangian, Matthew J. Benacquista Jan 1992

Second-Order Parametrized-Post-Newtonian Lagrangian, Matthew J. Benacquista

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

A many-body Lagrangian to second post-Newtonian order using an extension of the parametrized-post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism is introduced and the properties of new parameters are explored. A parametrized gauge transformation is developed to permit comparison with theories of gravity in a variety of different coordinate systems. A procedure to impose Lorentz invariance on a general second-order post-Newtonian Lagrangian is developed. The Lagrangian is then constrained to possess Lorentz invariance and a "Lorentz-invariant" gauge is introduced. The constrained Lagrangian is found to be described by ten new second-order PPN parameters. When the Lagrangian is further constrained to describe theories of gravity for …

Zero-Sum Madison, Thomas W. Merrill Jan 1992

Zero-Sum Madison, Thomas W. Merrill

Faculty Scholarship

Has the fabric of American constitutional law been permanently "distorted" by the Framers' preoccupation with protecting private property against redistribution? Jennifer Nedelsky thinks so. In this provocative study of how the idea of property shaped the political thought of the Framers and the institutions they designed, she argues that James Madison's constitutional philosophy was driven by fear that a future propertyless majority would seek to expropriate the holdings of a minority. To combat this danger, Madison sought to create a structure of government that would ensure the dominance of the propertied elite. Madison's obsessive fear of redistribution spread to the …

Plea-Bargaining As A Social Contract, Robert E. Scott, William J. Stuntz Jan 1992

Plea-Bargaining As A Social Contract, Robert E. Scott, William J. Stuntz

Faculty Scholarship

Most criminal prosecutions are settled without a trial. The parties to these settlements trade various risks and entitlements: the defendant relinquishes the right to go to trial (along with any chance of acquittal), while the prosecutor gives up the entitlement to seek the highest sentence or pursue the most serious charges possible. The resulting bargains differ predictably from what would have happened had the same cases been taken to trial. Defendants who bargain for a plea serve lower sentences than those who do not. On the other hand, everyone who pleads guilty is, by definition, convicted, while a substantial minority …
