Waking Up From The Resident Duty-Hour Nightmare, Olivia Jack
Waking Up From The Resident Duty-Hour Nightmare, Olivia Jack
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
Lengthy, grueling hours have long been the tradition for physicians-in-training, but resident exhaustion is a threat to patient and resident safety in the United States. This Note outlines the historical development of resident duty-hour regulation and examines the political and professional forces that continue to shape the current system. It argues that the current accreditation-based approach, that nearly all states rely on, inadequately protects residents and patients. This Note proposes several legislative and regulatory solutions, but suggests that in this moment of history, states are uniquely positioned to fill the regulatory gap. Such solutions include mandatory automated duty-hour tracking, regular …
Abortion Bites Back: An Analysis Of Direct Democracy Efforts In A Post Dobbs-Era, Kathleen Darcy, Pamela Aronson, Lisa Martin, Sarah Chaban
Abortion Bites Back: An Analysis Of Direct Democracy Efforts In A Post Dobbs-Era, Kathleen Darcy, Pamela Aronson, Lisa Martin, Sarah Chaban
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
The legal landscape surrounding reproductive rights is in flux, and direct democracy is a method by which increasingly informed and connected citizen voters are able to skirt perceived slowmoving or biased legislatures. Myriad factors shape state-level referendums, including social movements that intersect with gender ideology to challenge or defend existing arrangements. Yet, we know little about referendum rhetorical framing as tied to successes or failures in this pivotal post-Dobbs era. We use a content analysis to look at the rhetoric in state-level ballot proposals on reproductive freedom that were put in front of voters after the Dobbs decision (2022–2024). We …

Evaluation Of Quantification Methods Applied To Overlapping Ftir Features, Benjamin P. Diehl
Evaluation Of Quantification Methods Applied To Overlapping Ftir Features, Benjamin P. Diehl
Reviews, Analyses, and Instructional Studies in Electrochemistry (RAISE)
Quantifying overlapping FTIR spectral features is critical for electrochemical analysis but often requires complex deconvolution. This work systematically evaluates several area ratio and proxy-based quantification methods using a controlled synthetic spectral model with varying signal-to-noise ratio, peak spacing, width, background, and data resolution. Constrained peak fitting and fixed-window integration consistently exhibit near-perfect monotonicity (Spearman ≈ 1.000) and linearity (Pearson ≈ 0.999–1.000) across all conditions. In contrast, derivative and moment-based metrics show sensitivity to peak overlap, width, and background. These results demonstrate that physically grounded area-based methods provide the most robust and reliable quantification of overlapping FTIR features.
Exploring Health Policy As A Critical Mechanism Of Expression Of Right-Wing Government Policy, Aleisha Martinez Sandoval
Exploring Health Policy As A Critical Mechanism Of Expression Of Right-Wing Government Policy, Aleisha Martinez Sandoval
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
Global health policy has long been viewed as a “softer” arena of politics, driven by cooperation rather than competition. Unlike economics or defense, nations in this sphere have often set aside ideological differences to improve human well-being. Yet right-wing governments (RWGs) are increasingly redefining this space, transforming it from an international project of solidarity into a strategic platform for advancing core ideological commitments. In this thesis, I examine how healthcare has become a critical site where the foundational tenets of RWGs—hierarchy, tradition, market liberalism, sovereignty, law and order, and populist nativism—are vividly enacted and reinforced. What was once a domain …
Female Genital Cutting In American Foreign Policy – Proposal For Harm Reduction, Charlotte Racine
Female Genital Cutting In American Foreign Policy – Proposal For Harm Reduction, Charlotte Racine
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
Female Genital Cutting/Mutilation (FGC/M) has gained international attention as an issue of human rights and violence against women and girls. The United States, as a leading world power, has openly opposed its practice and actively condemns it in communities and countries of the Global South, yet it fails to oppose or condemn as staunchly identical procedures within its borders. The simultaneous condemnation of FGC when it occurs in “undeveloped” countries and acceptance of American procedures like cosmetic genital modification surgeries, male circumcision, and “corrective” surgeries on intersex infants produces a narrative of cultural superiority and imperialism that harms the international …
Prosecutorial Discretion: The Effect Of Social Dominance Orientation (Sdo) And Right-Wing Authoritarianism (Rwa) On Understanding And Support Among Americans, Jamie Shelton
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
The U.S. prison system is plagued by an overrepresentation of the country’s residents, at twenty percent of the world’s prison population. The discretion of prosecutors to determine when and which charges to file has been linked to the immense prison growth of the U.S. since the late 1970s, especially given their lack of judicial and public oversight. In this study, participants were asked to answer survey questions made up of four scales: knowledge of the prosecutorial role (Prosecutor Knowledge), support for policy curtailing prosecutorial discretion (Policy Support), Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), and Right-Wing Authoritarianism (RWA). Findings included significant results for …
Kissing Up, Kicking Down: How Brics Enables South African Sub-Imperialism, Karan Kuppa-Apte
Kissing Up, Kicking Down: How Brics Enables South African Sub-Imperialism, Karan Kuppa-Apte
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
South Africa has framed its BRICS membership as a strategic pivot from the West to the Global South. However, the country remains close to the Western-led order and reproduces unequal economic relations with its regional neighbors. This paper argues that South Africa's inability to break its dependency on the West and reorient itself towards BRICS is caused by an elite-driven approach to IPE that deepens longstanding dependencies, feeds into corruption, and encourages accumulation by dispossession. After establishing a theoretical framework based on dependency theory, world systems theory, and sub-imperialism, this paper identifies the minerals-energy complex (MEC), neoliberal post-apartheid reforms, and …
Guerillas, Manpads, And How To Shift A Conflict In Favor Of The Weaker Side, Augustus Mfxu Giller
Guerillas, Manpads, And How To Shift A Conflict In Favor Of The Weaker Side, Augustus Mfxu Giller
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
The Soviet Afghan War has emerged in popular culture and scholarship as a quintessential case of an innovative and superior technology being able to foil an enemy that would have otherwise emerged as the victor of a conflict. This is almost always in reference to the Afghan Mujahedin being able to counter technologically superior Soviet MI-24 Gunship Helicopters with American heat-seeking missiles. However, this assumption is largely shortsighted to the actual dynamics present in the Soviet Afghan conflict. Specifically, the failure to understand how an unconventional conflict like the Soviet Afghan war is fought, and an ineffective assessment of the …
Everybody Wants To Rule The World: How Ballistic Missile Defenses Can Reduce The Risk Of War, Aanya Ghosh
Everybody Wants To Rule The World: How Ballistic Missile Defenses Can Reduce The Risk Of War, Aanya Ghosh
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
Debates over ballistic missile defense often assume that defensive capability inherently destabilizes deterrence by eroding mutual vulnerability. This article challenges that assumption by arguing that the strategic effects of missile defense are neither predetermined nor uniform. Limited and layered defensive systems generate two simultaneous pressures: stabilizing deterrence-by-denial effects against limited coercive threats and destabilizing uncertainty regarding long-term retaliatory viability. Which mechanism prevails depends not on defensive technology alone, but on policy design—specifically system scale, doctrinal framing, and integration within the broader offense-defense relationship. Drawing on classical deterrence theory, offense-defense scholarship, and contemporary analyses by Roberts, Wilkening, and Daalder, Goldgeier, and …

Mental Toughness Training And Employee Engagement In Healthcare: Evidence For Leadership-Level Differences In Behavioral Engagement Dose-Response, Spencer A. Cavan, Andreas Stamatis
Mental Toughness Training And Employee Engagement In Healthcare: Evidence For Leadership-Level Differences In Behavioral Engagement Dose-Response, Spencer A. Cavan, Andreas Stamatis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Engagement is a key mechanism through which leadership development programs translate into sustained behavior change, yet leaders at different organizational levels may differ in how effectively they convert participation into applied engagement. PURPOSE: We tested whether an identical 6-session mental toughness (MT) intervention produced different engagement benefits for mid-level versus senior healthcare leaders after controlling for baseline engagement, participation, and MT. METHODS: Two cohorts of hospital leaders completed the same intervention (mid-level n=20; senior n=12) using identical measures. MT was assessed with the Mental Toughness Index, and engagement with the Employee Engagement Scale (Total, Cognitive, Emotional, Behavioral). Outcomes …
Strength And Performance Parameters Among Cisgender And Transgender Men And Women, Ryan A. Rosa
Strength And Performance Parameters Among Cisgender And Transgender Men And Women, Ryan A. Rosa
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Transgender individuals have always existed and social acceptance of them continues to improve. However, there has been controversy on whether transgender athletes should play on sports teams that align with their gender identity. PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to compile a more comprehensive profile of cisgender and transgender individuals. The central hypothesis was that transgender men (TM) and women (TW) using gender affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) would be more similar to cisgender men (CM) and women (CW). METHODS: This study recruited moderately active cisgender and transgender men and women from around the greater New York area to be …

Use Of Resistive Exercise Snacks To Improve Upper Body Fitness In Undergraduate And Graduate Students, Zachary Abouelkawaam, Kevin Vaughan, Alexander Rothstein, Abdelmohsen Mossolem, Jean-Paul Dodier, Carlos Africa, Freddie Leong, John Handrakis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Graduate/undergraduate students lack time for consistent physical activity, leading to declines in fitness. Exercise snacks (ExSnck), short bouts of submaximal exercise performed throughout the day, may offer a solution. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of a 6-week upper body ExSnck program on endurance, strength, power, and enjoyment compared to a 1-set maximal exercise (MaxEx) protocol and a control group. METHODS: 43 participants were randomly assigned to ExSnck (n=15), MaxEx (n=16), or Control (n=12) groups. The ExSnck group performed 33% of their maximal push-ups and plank time for 3 sessions/day (sessions ≥2hrs apart). The MaxEx group performed the same …

ABSTRACT
The individual variability in muscular adaptation to resistance training (RT) is a well-documented phenomenon, with genetic factors hypothesized to play a significant role. However, the extent to which heritable factors influence muscle hypertrophy remains equivocal due to the paucity of empirical evidence. PURPOSE: This study aimed …

Landlocked: The Igorot Ili In The Cordillera Regional Autonomy Pageants, Jose Kervin Calabias
Kritika Kultura
The present essay intervenes in the resurgent discussions on Cordillera regional autonomy by relocating “autonomy” as it is showcased in the 2023 pageant “Search for Mr. and Ms. Cordillera Autonomy Youth Ambassador” (CAYA). This government-organized pageant simulates the simultaneously isolating and relational understanding of islands through the ili, an Indigenous form of self-governance, embodied by the youth “ambassadors” in the pageant. Through cultural analysis of the pageant space, contestant self-introductions, posters, and attires in the pageant, I argue that these minor agents of autonomy perform oratorical negotiations that uplift each of their ili’s alleged “self-sufficiency” to appeal to the government’s …

Archipelagic Monstrosity: The Manananggal In Isabel Yap’S “Good Girls”, Kam Tou Pang
Kritika Kultura
Discussions about the monster have always hinged on the modes of othering or assimilation, yet through mobilizing negative and positive affective registers respectively, they both objectify the monster in service of a normativizing agenda of managing the abnormal, eventually inhibiting the monster’s potentialities in feeling and relating otherwise. This essay traces the historicities of the manananggal, a Philippine folkloric monster, and compares key cultural and literary representations within and beyond the Philippines. In particular, it examines the short story “Good Girls” from the speculative short story collection Never Have I Ever (2021) by the transnational Filipina American writer Isabel Yap. …
Fandom In Conflict: How Japanese K-Pop Fans Countered Anti-Korean Sentiment In The 2010s, Joho Yamamoto
Fandom In Conflict: How Japanese K-Pop Fans Countered Anti-Korean Sentiment In The 2010s, Joho Yamamoto
Kritika Kultura
This article explores how Japanese K-pop fans responded to anti-Korean sentiment in the 2010s, particularly in the wake of xenophobic protests such as the 2013 Shin-Okubo demonstration. Drawing on Antonio Gramsci’s theory of the “war of position,” this study examines how fans— primarily young women without institutional power—engaged in affective and discursive resistance through everyday digital practices. Based on qualitative analysis of tweets posted in reaction to a hate rally announcement, this paper demonstrates how fans used emotional expressions, ethical arguments, and humor to challenge nationalist narratives. These tweets not only rejected hate speech but also redefined national identity by …
Too Much Love Will Kill Everything: K-Pop Fandom’S Shift From Prosumer To Market Distorter, Hyungjong Lee, Jimmyn Parc
Too Much Love Will Kill Everything: K-Pop Fandom’S Shift From Prosumer To Market Distorter, Hyungjong Lee, Jimmyn Parc
Kritika Kultura
Fandom activities gained increasing visibility during the 1980s and 1990s, fueled by the growing prominence of popular culture. This visibility has been further amplified since the 2010s by the rapid advancement of digital technology and the evolving media landscape. Generally, fandom is regarded as a positive force in the global music industry, and the K-pop phenomenon is often cited as a prime example—its global expansion largely attributed to the fervent support of dedicated fans. It remains questionable though whether fandom activism has advanced the music industry without generating adverse effects. As fandoms have transitioned from passive consumers to active prosumers, …

From Journey To The West To Black Myth: Wukong: The Haunted Ghost And Gaming Politics In China, Kaihui Bi, Tianyu Yu
Kritika Kultura
This article offers a theoretical reading of the political allegory expressed in Black Myth: Wu Kong. It argues that the reincarnated Destined One can be viewed as the returned ghost, which represents the trauma that has been left unresolved and lurks deep in the collective memory of contemporary Chinese society. This ghostly figure transgresses and appears in the medium of the game, helping players remain engaged and fascinated in the process of exploring unknown stories through the digital representations in the game. In doing so, the game aims to intervene and release issues such as personal and collective trauma in …
The Burden Of Truth: Illness, Failed Mourning, And The Porous Body, Kim Jonggab
The Burden Of Truth: Illness, Failed Mourning, And The Porous Body, Kim Jonggab
Kritika Kultura
“Why me?” When illness strikes, this visceral cry is not merely a psychological plea for comfort, but also an ontological rupture that shatters the modern myth of the atomistic, closed body. This paper argues that depression, particularly “depression without cause,” functions as a catalyst for a radical existential shift. Unlike clinical models that seek a discrete etiology, the experience of causeless suffering bypasses linear causality, exposing the limitations of a substance-based ontology. Grounded in a critique of the “bounded ego,” this study rethinks the discourse of the body by approaching illness and failed mourning through a relational and ecological perspective. …
