Tumour lysis syndrome is a catastrophic complicalion of treatment of certain neoplasms. It is usually seen with the tumours that have high growth fractions, increased bulk and extreme sensitivity to cytotoxic therapy. Most commonly it occurs in association with hematologic malignancies such as lymphomas and leukaemias. Rarely it has been observed with solid tumours like small cell lung cancer, seminoma and carcinoma of the breast. The syndrome develops due to massive cell lysis occurring within a few hours to a few days of starting the cytotoxic therapy. Municipal Annexation In North Carolina: A Look At The Past Decade, Steven W. Blevins

Campbell Law Review

Over the past decade North Carolina's annexation statutes have been the subject of much litigation. These challenges have taken numerous approaches in seeking to have the various annexation ordinances declared invalid. Many of these challenges have sought to have the statutes themselves declared invalid as a violation of both the United States Constitution and the North Carolina Constitution. Still other approaches have sought to have the actions of the annexing municipality declared illegal for failure to comply with these annexation statutes. One theme is visible throughout all of the challenges to annexation, the legislature has determined that annexation serves the …

Campbell Law Review

This Note will offer a brief history of the case law developed prior to Embree and will analyze the rationale used by the North Carolina Supreme Court in order to make their determination to grant an equitable remedy in this particular case. Next, this Note will examine the holding in Embree and will advance the proposition that the holding in that case is a departure from pre:existing law and cannot be easily reconciled with the case law developed in earlier North Carolina decisions and decisions of Federal Courts applying North Carolina law. Finally, this Note will outline the potential problems …

The Impropriety Of Expert Witness Testimony On The Law, Thomas E. Baker

Faculty Publications

Professor Baker weighs in on a new trend of allowing expert opinion on the status of the law. Some Preliminary Thoughts On Long-Range Planning For The Federal Judiciary, Thomas E. Baker Jan 1992

Some Preliminary Thoughts On Long-Range Planning For The Federal Judiciary, Thomas E. Baker

Faculty Publications

Professor Baker gives his prescription for the Long-Range Planning Committee of the Judicial Conference. First, he considers the "mission" of the federal courts, explaining that there should be no single, objectively correct conception of the role of the federal courts. Second, he discusses his conception of long-range planning, in terms of a relatively short event horizon and the absolutely wide-open scope of the range of proposals that are relevant to the work of the Committee. Third, he describes his preliminary thoughts on the role of the Committee to be a kind of permanent Federal Courts Study Committee modeled after comparable …

The Effects Of Self-Graphing On Regular, At-Risk And Special Needs Students' Oral Reading Fluency And Comprehension., William D. Farrer Jan 1992

The Effects Of Self-Graphing On Regular, At-Risk And Special Needs Students' Oral Reading Fluency And Comprehension., William D. Farrer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There are regular and at-risk students in regular education who are not progressing academically. The emphasis of keeping students in the regular reading classroom, while meeting their individual needs makes effective documentation vital. This study indicated that frequent measuring of student progress by collecting and graphing data can be useful. A multiple baseline design across behaviors and students was employed to determine if self-graphing would affect greater and more rapid change in student progress. All students showed improvement when they self-graphed words per minute (WPM) and rated their daily performance. Because improvement in WPM occurred only when self-graphing was introduced, …

Fighting Exclusion From Televised Presidential Debates: Minor-Party Candidates' Standing To Challenge Sponsoring Organizations' Tax-Exempt Status Note, Gregory P. Magarian

Scholarship@WashULaw

This Note argues that courts should recognize minor-party presidential candidates' standing to challenge the section 50l(c)(3) tax-exempt status of organizations sponsoring televised debates that exclude minor-party candidates. Part I situates the issue within the context of the Supreme Court's standing jurisprudence and concludes that the validity of a third-party tax-status challenge by an aggrieved minor-party presidential candidate remains an open question. Part II analyzes the Second and District of Columbia Circuits' decisions and concludes that the Second Circuit's approach properly interprets the Supreme Court's standing doctrine and correctly resolves the particular arguments which both courts consider. Part III first demonstrates …

The Relationship Among Sex-Role Categories, Self-Esteem, And Achievement: A Preliminary Study Of Taiwanese Youth, Chun-Hwei Chang Jan 1992

The Relationship Among Sex-Role Categories, Self-Esteem, And Achievement: A Preliminary Study Of Taiwanese Youth, Chun-Hwei Chang

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the study was to investigate different levels of self-esteem and attitude toward achievement in individuals of varying sex-role categories: masculinity, femininity, and androgyny. The subjects for this study were 125 Taiwanese college freshmen, 68 males and 57 females, at the Tunghai University in Taiwan. Three scales were used in this study: the Bem Sex-role Inventory, the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory (CSEI), and the Attitude toward Achievement Inventory. The results of this study indicated that the masculinity-category subjects had both higher self-esteem and greater self-concept of ability toward achievement than the non-masculinity-category subjects. Also, there were statistically significant differences …
