Technical Brief 9: Training And Using Volunteers In Archeology: A Case Study From Arkansas, Hester A. Davis
United States National Park Service: Publications
Introduction
Involvement of the public in archeology can and has taken many forms. The quote from McGimsey above reflects the philosophy of public archeology that he espouses, and which has led many, both professional and avocational archeologists, into cooperative endeavors of mutual benefit. There are pros and cons to such programs for both sides. There are professional archeologists who condemn any archeology done by anyone without an advanced academic degree and several years of training. There are avocational archeologists (and I use this term to mean people who do scientific archeology as a hobby not as a profession) who have …

Nonalloyed Ohmic Contacts On Low-Temperature Molecular-Beam Epitaxial Gaas: Influence Of Deep Donor Band, H. Yamamoto, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look
Physics Faculty Publications
The Ohmic nature of the nonalloyed metal contact on molecular beam epitaxial GaAs grown at 200 °C was studied. The specific contact resistances at room temperature and 120 K were 1.5×10−3 and 7.0×10−1 Ω cm2, respectively. These values are anomalously low considering that the conduction‐band electron concentration in this material is less than 1011 cm−3 at room temperature. The experimental results indicate that the carrier transport at the metal/semiconductor interface is dominated by a dense (∼3×1019 cm−3) EL2‐like deep donor band, rather than the usual conduction band.
Reforming The Ncaa Drug-Testing Program To Withstand State Constitutional Scrutiny: An Analysis And Proposal, Thomas P. Simon
Reforming The Ncaa Drug-Testing Program To Withstand State Constitutional Scrutiny: An Analysis And Proposal, Thomas P. Simon
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Shortly after year-round testing went into effect, the California Court of Appeal held that the NCAA's original drug testing program violated a student-athlete's right of privacy as protected by the California Constitution. This Note examines the impact of that decision and attempts to design a program that will withstand state constitutional scrutiny. Part I describes the current NCAA drug-testing program. Part II looks at the fourth amendment argument against drug testing of student-athletes. Part III assesses the viability of a federal constitutional attack on NCAA testing, while Part IV discusses a state constitutional challenge. Finally, Part V proposes reform of …
Plans, Protections, And Professional Intervention: Innovations In Divorce Custody Reform And The Role Of Legal Professionals, Jane W. Ellis
Plans, Protections, And Professional Intervention: Innovations In Divorce Custody Reform And The Role Of Legal Professionals, Jane W. Ellis
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Beginning with an overview of the "law in theory" in Part II, this Article describes the Parenting Act's political origins and the aspirations on which the Act was based. These aspirations reflect common contemporary national themes and are based on common (and often unexamined) assumptions about the purposes of custody law and, indeed, the nature and capacity of law itself. They are described in conjunction with major theoretical arguments about custody reform. Part II then sets out the specific regulations embodying the drafters' goals. The Article next looks at this ambitious new "law in practice" in Part III. It describes …

Mormons On The Warfront: The Protestant Mormons And Catholic Mormons Of Northern Ireland, Claudia W. Harris
Mormons On The Warfront: The Protestant Mormons And Catholic Mormons Of Northern Ireland, Claudia W. Harris
BYU Studies
The conflict in Northern Ireland between Catholics and Protestants places Mormons, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in an impossibly difficult position, being shunned by both sides. Claudia Harris tells of her research in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in the 1980s, staying the homes of Mormons and hearing of their experiences. Many Mormons were serving in various security forces and thus were paramilitary targets. Harris tells the stories and explores the cultural mindset of Irish Mormons.

A Great Little Saint: A Brief Look At The Life Of Henry William Bigler, M. Guy Bishop
BYU Studies
Henry William Bigler (1815-1900) never held any high position in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, though he was a member of the church for over sixty years. He was a member of the Mormon Battalion, was present at Sutter's Mill when gold was discovered, served two missions in Hawaii, and served at the St. George, Utah, Temple. His life was one of self sacrifice and diligence.

A Rational Choice Theory Of Supreme Court Statutory Decisions With Applications To The State Farm And Grove City Cases, Rafael Gely, Pablo T. Spiller
A Rational Choice Theory Of Supreme Court Statutory Decisions With Applications To The State Farm And Grove City Cases, Rafael Gely, Pablo T. Spiller
Faculty Publications
In this article we follow the recent developments of the modern theory of administrative agencies, by developing a rational choice theory of the Supreme Court. Our framework combines two of the main characteristics of this literature: namely, the rational choice modeling strategy with the notion that institutions matter in the design of public policy. We differ basically by modeling the Supreme Court as a self-interested, ideologically motivated institution, making its decisions subject not to the traditional legal rules of precedent, but to the constraints arising from the political interests of other institutions of government-namely, Congress and the President.
