Of Polls And Prestige: One Faculty Member's Candid Views, Richard O. Lempert
Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)
The latest ranking of law schools, this one by U.S. News & World Report, is out,* and the University of Michigan Law School is ranked 7th. At most schools such a ranking would be a cause for joy, but since Michigan has been ranked between 2nd and 5th in similar rankings over the past 15 years, seventh place might give the impression that we are slipping.
For those who are so worried, there is good news, and there is bad news. The good news is that the U.S. News poll should not be taken seriously; it is fundamentally flawed and …

Onions, Or The Joys Of Writing A Treatise, Joel Seligman
Onions, Or The Joys Of Writing A Treatise, Joel Seligman
Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)
From time to time during the five years I have worked with Louis Loss on what will be a 12-volume work on Securities Regulation, I have been asked what treatise writing is like. Normally the question is posed with the unspoken assumption that it must be a little like a serious case of leprosy or perhaps a violation of the 13th Amendment. For example: "Is it horribly depressing?" Or: "How many years do you think it will take?" Then there is a somewhat more cynical unspoken assumption that occasionally can be perceived: "Don't you miss theoretical writing?" Or most splendid …

Court Decisions
In the Blackfeet Tribal Court of Appeals, the Court denied an appeal of a convicted Indian person. The Court reiterated that, pursuant to the Blackfeet Tribal Law and Order Code, Ch. 4, Sec. 1, “a judge can sentence a convicted Indian person to: 1) work for the tribe, 2) imprisonment and/or fine, and 3) restitution to the injured party, at the discretion of the sitting judge as to what sentence is imposed.

The authors have constructed a single-stage, frequency-doubled, copper vapor laser-pumped dye laser to be used in the measurement of atmospheric hydroxyl radical concentrations. This laser can be tuned to either the 1← 0 or 0← 0 vibrational transition in the electronic transition ²Sigmalarr²Pi. A new photon counting instrument is used for HO fluorescence detection. Theoretical and experimental studies of instrument performance show better sensitivities and reduced photolytic interferences than have been possible with previous systems based upon Nd:YAG pumping.

Accurate Quasi-Quantum Mechanical Numerical Methodology, Donald Greenspan
Accurate Quasi-Quantum Mechanical Numerical Methodology, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
A quasi-quantum mechanical method in which energy is determined by quantum mechanics and motion by Newtonian mechanics is studied by combining it with numerical methodology which conserves energy exactly at each time step. Application is made to the study of the diameter and vibrational frequency of the ground state H2 molecule. The numerical results agree exactly with experimental and quantum mechanical results.
