Marian Gallagher: A Memorial Dedication, Morris L. Cohen Oct 1990

Marian Gallagher: A Memorial Dedication, Morris L. Cohen

Washington Law Review

In an academic career that spanned over forty years, Marian Gallagher left a unique mark on American law librarianship, and thereby on American legal education. She trained many outstanding law librarians, inspired an even greater number of us, and provided leadership in her own library and throughout her profession. She was also, as George Schatzki and others have said, funny and happy, warm and sensitive, bright, thorough and efficient. Through her individuality, her wit and her manner, she brought color, verve and style to a profession. Her special contribution to law librarianship and legal education stemmed from a combination of …

Recollections Of Marian Gould Gallagher, Charles E. Odegaard Oct 1990

Recollections Of Marian Gould Gallagher, Charles E. Odegaard

Washington Law Review

As I think back over many years of happy association with Marian Gallagher, I find that my memories of her fall into three categories. The earliest concern her role as librarian of the University of Washington Law School Library. In August 1958, after I came to the University of Washington, it became evident that the library support system of the entire University needed special attention. Suzzalo Library was filled to capacity and needed a sizeable expansion. The crowding had encouraged the development of a plethora of small, often poorly-staffed departmental libraries. There was also need for an expanded, professionally-trained library …

Marian Gallagher: A Tribute, J. Myron Jacobstein

Washington Law Review

In these days of LEXIS and WESTLAW, fax machines, photocopiers, compact discs, and electronic library bibliographic networks, it is easy to forget what law libraries and legal research were like before these developments. Although these new devices are all helpful to legal research, it is doubful that they would be as successful as they are were it not for the development of law libraries and law librarianship under such able leaders as Marian Gould Gallagher.

Post-Employment Lobbying Restrictions On The Legislative Branch Of Government: A Minimalist Approach To Regulating Ethics In Government, Joseph I. Hochman Oct 1990

Post-Employment Lobbying Restrictions On The Legislative Branch Of Government: A Minimalist Approach To Regulating Ethics In Government, Joseph I. Hochman

Washington Law Review

Federal post-employment lobbying restrictions currently apply only to former executive branch employees. Congress is considering legislation that expands the prohibitions to include the legislative branch. This Comment discusses the proposed legislation in light of first amendment concerns, and concludes that the legislation is constitutional. Moreover, the legislation strikes an optimal balance between the interests of the public, the government, lobbyists, and their clients

Angular Distribution Of Auger Electrons Emitted Through The Resonant Transfer And Excitation Process Following O⁵⁺+He Collisions, Malika Benhenni, Stephen M. Shafroth, J. K. Swenson, Michael Schulz, J. P. Giese, Harald Schone, Charles Randy Vane, Peter F. Dittner, Sheldon Datz Oct 1990

Angular Distribution Of Auger Electrons Emitted Through The Resonant Transfer And Excitation Process Following O⁵⁺+He Collisions, Malika Benhenni, Stephen M. Shafroth, J. K. Swenson, Michael Schulz, J. P. Giese, Harald Schone, Charles Randy Vane, Peter F. Dittner, Sheldon Datz

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This Letter reports the first measurements of the angular distribution of Auger electrons emitted from the decay of the (1s2s2p2)3D O4+** doubly excited state formed predominantly through resonant transfer and excitation (RTE) in collisions of 13-MeV O5+ projectiles with He. The (1s2s2p2)3D angular distribution is strongly peaked along the beam direction, in agreement with recent calculations of the RTE angle-dependent impulse approximation. Furthermore, interference effects between the RTE and the elastic target direct-ionization channels are observed.

Four Poems, Victor Jacobs Oct 1990

Four Poems, Victor Jacobs

University of Dayton Review

It is with pleasure that the Review makes an exception to its policy of not publishing creative work. These four sonnets in the traditional mode have been composed by Victor Jacobs, a generous and longtime supporter of the academic life of this university, and they speak in such a heartfelt and universal manner to the grief over the loss of his beloved wife, Irene Murr Jacobs, that they warrant a broader readership within the academic community.

Prophecy As Process: Reconstructing The Future In Grass’S Die Rattin , Patrick O'Neill Oct 1990

Prophecy As Process: Reconstructing The Future In Grass’S Die Rattin , Patrick O'Neill

University of Dayton Review

Die Rattin very overtly invites interpretation as an apocalyptic text, prophesying, with apparent gloomy relish. a scenario of ultimate and inevitable disaster. Readers who like their message this neat, however, have tended to reject Die Rattin (1 986) for essentially the same reason they already rejected Der Butt nine years earlier: Grass, for all his obvious good intentions, so the argument goes, has in both cases produced monstrous farragos of ineffectual satire which eventually drown in their own diffuseness and narrative self-indulgence, failing signally in the process to achieve their ostensible aim. A more appropriate and more productive reading of …

Skeletons In The Closet That Smell Of Stalin: Heiner Muller’S Wolokolamsker Chaussee , Pam Allen Oct 1990

Skeletons In The Closet That Smell Of Stalin: Heiner Muller’S Wolokolamsker Chaussee , Pam Allen

University of Dayton Review

Through candid presentation of controversial events from the pre-history of the German Democratic Republic through the 1980s, Heiner Müller's five-play cycle Wolokolamsker Chaussee boldly confronts aspects of the past that had not yet been dealt with in socialist Germany. Unlike the official chronicle of GDR history, which claims total abolition of all traces of fascism and, in addition, ignores the role of Stalin in the shaping of its own identity, Müller's confrontation with his country's past draws attention to the heritage of both fascism and Stalinism. The view within official circles regarding fascism was that the 1945 establishment of a …

Satire And Science: Some Restoration And Eighteenth-Century Links, Jo Allen Bradham Oct 1990

Satire And Science: Some Restoration And Eighteenth-Century Links, Jo Allen Bradham

University of Dayton Review

Linking satire and science evokes the standard response that late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century satirists, individually and practically in chorus, attacked the foolishness and the excess of scientific experimentation, especially that demonstrated by the Royal Society. Satirists, so conventional wisdom holds, argue that the so-called natural philosophers' farfetched projects have nothing to do with the understanding of human beings, the strengthening of a wise society, or the improvement of the moral state. The third book of Gulliver's Travels and the last book of the Dunciad confirm this view and in treatise after treatise appear as the supporting examples. Another approach—one that …

The Child In A Christmas Carol, Julie Moore Oct 1990

The Child In A Christmas Carol, Julie Moore

University of Dayton Review

Charles Dickens in his own century was immensely popular for his Christmas tales, so much so that he became synonymous with the Christmas holiday itself. For example, R.C. Churchill explains that as Theodore Watts-Dunton "was passing through the London streets on the day after Dickens's death in June 1870 … [he] heard a child inquire: "Will Father Christmas die too?'" (215).

Big Thoughts For Little Words: A Problem With A Sexist Word Or A Problem With The Word “Sexist”?, Frank S. Zepezauer

University of Dayton Review

"Just when we were starting to be aware of the degree to which language affects people's perceptions of women and substitute 'people working' for 'men working' and 'humankind' for 'mankind,' this 'guy' thing happened. Just when people have started becoming aware that a 40-year-old woman shouldn't be called a girl, this "\'guy' thing has crept in." —Nancy Stevens, "The Guying of Gals," San Francisco Chronicle, 5 June 1988: B1.

Foreign Languages As A Basic Skill: Some Thoughts And Facts About Language Learning In The Dayton Area, Elke J. Hatch

University of Dayton Review

Since foreign languages have occupied only a modest place in American high schools and colleges, this country has not produced many students who possess useful competence in a foreign language. The American Council of Education (ACE) reports that only 5% of US college graduates have meaningful proficiency in a second language. In recent years, several prominent groups and commissions have called this lack of foreign language competency a grave danger for the United States. The Commission on Foreign Languages and International Studies, appointed by President Carter, was the first group that focused the attention of the general public on this …
