The native vegetation of Iowa was primarily tallgrass prairie and currently exists only in small isolated parcels, including some remnants occurring in roadsides. Roadside prairie remnants are important for historical, environmental, aesthetic, scientific, and economic reasons. Information about factors influencing the occurrance of roadside prairie vegetation could be useful to roadside vegetation managers in development of initial vegetation surveys and subsequent to restoration of roadside prairie vegetation.

Observational and experimental studies have been undertaken in the southern North Sea environment, including five major estuaries (Humber, Thames, Scheldt, Weser and Elbe), with the aim of elucidating the mechanistic and kinetic details of trace metal reactivity required for the refinement of pollutant transport models. The results of a systematic investigation of suspended particle characteristics (BET specific surface area and porosity, carbon content. Fe and Mn oxide coatings) indicated that, although there exists significant yet explicable variability among the North Sea estuaries, such compositional factors do not exert an observable influence on solid-solution interactions. The in vitro and in situ immune responses of carp Cyprinus carpio to Ichthyophthirius multifiliis were investigated in order to characterise the immune mechanisms involved in protection. 'O' group and adult carp were immunised against I.multifiliis by controlled infection procedures. Sterile immunity was not achieved; theronts were observed to penetrate the skin of immunised fish, although in the majority of cases this did not lead to successful trophozoite establishment. It was concluded that most parasites prematurely exited the epidermis of immunised fish within two hours of penetration as an active survival strategy. Trophozoites remaining in immunised fish beyond two hours …

The ability of thick-lipped grey mullet to mount both humoral and cellular immune responses to Cryptocotyle lingua has been demonstrated here for the first time. Of the 3 procedures for immunisation investigated, namely exposure to live cercariae, intraperitoneal (ip) injection of whole killed cercariae and ip injection of a cercarial sonicate, the former gave the highest primary antibody titres with a peak response at 4 weeks post infection. Peak titres occurred at 5 and 7 weeks after immunisation by ip injection of sonicated cercariae and whole killed cercariae respectively. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the occupational outcomes of bachelor's degrees earned by individuals when they are 25 years or older, here called nontraditional graduates. The subjects of the study were 212 nontraditional graduates of the University of Northern Iowa. They were randomly selected from a list of individuals who received their college degrees from 1984 to 1988 and who were 25 years old or older at the time they graduated. The pieces were representative of various style periods, including Baroque, Classic, and Twentieth Century. Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) was an Italian composer of the baroque era. He learned to play . the violin under his father's instruction, but later turned his attention to vocal and contrapuntal studies. This investigation centers on the impact the computer, as an instrument, has on computer anxiety. Other variables examined were gender, age, academic experience, and computer experience. Eighty-three rural Iowa high school juniors and seniors were administered a Computer Opinion Survey {Maurer & Simonson, 1984) as a measure of computer anxiety. The purpose of this study was to validate the Caltrac Personal Activity Monitor against directly measured energy expenditure (EE) at treadmill speeds and grades of 3 mph, 0%; 3 mph, 8%; 5 mph, 0%; and 6 mph, 0%, with Caltracs located on the dominant hip, non-dominant hip, and the waistband at center back. This study investigated the effect of teacher inservice training on their utilization of computer based telecommunications. Eight teachers from a rural sized school district participated in this case study. The teachers were divided into experimental and control groups. Four teachers were assigned to each group. The experimental group attended two 90 minute training sessions on telecommunications and its educational applications. The control group did not receive training until after the study was complete. The purpose of this study was to compare bioelectrical impedance with hydrostatic weighing in lean subjects with varying amounts of fat-free mass and activity levels. The percentage of body fat of each subject was measured by anthropometry; bioelectrical impedance, using two different equations; and hydrostatic weighing (HW) methods. The two equations used for bioelectrical impedance were versions 1.51 (BIA2) and the weight management program (BIA3) from RJL Systems, Inc. HW was used as the criterion measure. Professional codes adopted by states and based on the Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the Model Code of Professional Responsibility govern lawyers' conduct. The ethical codes, however, fail to address many ethical questions confronting lawyers. In this Article, Professor Bruce Green highlights the ethical codes' weaknesses, particularly as they relate to the conduct of criminal defense attorneys. As he describes, the ethical codes require advocates to represent their clients "zealously," but, at the same time, "within the bounds of the law." When the codes do not proscribe conduct that would advance their clients' causes, conscientious advocates must consider whether …

A kindergarten class gains practice in reciting the letters of the alphabet by singing "The Alphabet Song." Musical instruments made by third grade children are used in experiments during a science unit on sounds. The mathematical concept of fractions is reinforced when fourth graders calculate musical note values of familiar tunes. Fifth grade students study the Civil War through the examination of lyrics of many songs representative of that era. In all four situations, music was utilized in the teaching of various content areas.

The outcomes of Chapter 1 students involved in a cooperative group structure during reading were investigated. The study was conducted in a Chapter 1 classroom with two groups of second-grade students. A total of 8 subjects were involved in the study. During the 10-week study, each group was exposed to the experimental treatment for a 5-week period and the control treatment for 5 weeks.
