There has been limited research which specifically explores the effects of science achievement when teaching thinking skills in isolation to upper elementary students. There are many components of thinking skills; however, the present study deals specifically with the student responsibility aspect of thinking skills. Subjects are fifth- and sixth-grade science students enrolled in a small rural Midwestern school district. Students were divided into classes by the principal. There was an effort to equalize both classes academically. The student responsibility section of a thinking skills program, devised by the Area Education Agency 7, was used. The purpose of this study was to compare the locus of control between those individuals who indicated they had terminated their high school athletic participation because of burnout and those who did not. It was hypothesized that athletes who dropped out of sport due to burnout would have a higher external locus of control (individuals who perceive that outside factors control their lives) as compared to those who did not. The purpose of this study was to validate the Caltrac Personal Activity Monitor against directly measured energy expenditure (EE) at treadmill speeds and grades of 3 mph, 0%; 3 mph, 8%; 5 mph, 0%; and 6 mph, 0%, with Caltracs located on the dominant hip, non-dominant hip, and the waistband at center back. It was hypothesized that there would be no significant difference between Caltrac Caloric output values (with Caltracs worn at any of the locations) and EE represented by Caloric output calculated from direct oxygen consumption (V02) and respiratory quotient (RQ) measurements from a Beckman metabolic measurement cart (MMC). …

The present study was designed to examine professional understanding of roles between school psychologists and elementary school counselors. The study was also designed to examine current perceptions of the school psychologists' role and the elementary school counselors' role. Finally, those functions that are areas of potential conflict or collaboration between the professions were examined. Eighty-five elementary school counselors and 85 school psychologists were identified as working together within public school systems across seven Iowa Area Education Agencies. Stress, an everyday fact of life, can be either positive or negative (Bradfield & Fones, 1985a; Truch, 1980). When faced with too little stress, a lack of productivity may occur, however, when faced with too much stress, anxiety and unhappiness may result (Johnson & Harkins, 1984).

This study investigated the effect of teacher inservice training on their utilization of computer based telecommunications. Eight teachers from a rural sized school district participated in this case study. The teachers were divided into experimental and control groups. Four teachers were assigned to each group. The experimental group attended two 90 minute training sessions on telecommunications and its educational applications. The control group did not receive training until after the study was complete. Both groups logged their telecommunications use over a 6-week period starting immediately after the experimental group attended the first training session. Results of this study indicated a …

The purpose of this study was to compare bioelectrical impedance with hydrostatic weighing in lean subjects with varying amounts of fat-free mass and activity levels. The percentage of body fat of each subject was measured by anthropometry; bioelectrical impedance, using two different equations; and hydrostatic weighing (HW) methods. The two equations used for bioelectrical impedance were versions 1.51 (BIA2) and the weight management program (BIA3) from RJL Systems, Inc. HW was used as the criterion measure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutrition knowledge of wait staff in 24-hour, full menu/table service restaurants. Also explored was the relationship of sex, age, education level, average number of hours worked per week, total length of employment as a wait staff member, and personal dietary interest to knowledge of nutrition in wait staff. In the fall of 1990, 160 questionnaires were delivered to wait staff at eight 24-hour, full menu/table service restaurants in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. Professional codes adopted by states and based on the Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the Model Code of Professional Responsibility govern lawyers' conduct. The ethical codes, however, fail to address many ethical questions confronting lawyers. In this Article, Professor Bruce Green highlights the ethical codes' weaknesses, particularly as they relate to the conduct of criminal defense attorneys. As he describes, the ethical codes require advocates to represent their clients "zealously," but, at the same time, "within the bounds of the law." When the codes do not proscribe conduct that would advance their clients' causes, conscientious advocates must consider whether …

A kindergarten class gains practice in reciting the letters of the alphabet by singing "The Alphabet Song." Musical instruments made by third grade children are used in experiments during a science unit on sounds. The mathematical concept of fractions is reinforced when fourth graders calculate musical note values of familiar tunes. Fifth grade students study the Civil War through the examination of lyrics of many songs representative of that era. In all four situations, music was utilized in the teaching of various content areas.

The outcomes of Chapter 1 students involved in a cooperative group structure during reading were investigated. The study was conducted in a Chapter 1 classroom with two groups of second-grade students. A total of 8 subjects were involved in the study. During the 10-week study, each group was exposed to the experimental treatment for a 5-week period and the control treatment for 5 weeks. A cooperative group structure was implemented during the experimental treatment, with students working in dyads to complete assigned tasks. Locus of control refers to the degree to which individuals believe they are responsible for the outcomes of their behavior. Internally controlled people believe that they have some control over their successes or failures, whereas externally controlled people believe that their success or failure is a result of fate, luck, or circumstance. It is suggested that children with an internal locus of control are more aware of their environment, and the relationship between their behavior and achievement.
