ThIs Article focuses on the problem of how artistic values affect determinatlons of copyright management. It discusses how the copyright statutes embody a congressional desire to have determinations of eligibility for copyright made without regard for the artistic value of the work at issue. Selected International Higher Education System: Student Psychological Concerns, Hiroko Okamura

International higher education systems particularly in Japan and the United States, and other selected western countries are in need of student psychological concerns data. There are a number of student environmental and psychological concerns which affect performance in education, such as: learning environments within the family; school and community; students' motivation to learn; professional goals; evaluation of achievement by examinations; and related psychological elements such as anxiety, stress and pressure. This study will survey related student environments and their psychological concerns to provide a better understanding of related international education systems, and how the system affects environmental pressures.

Language is a process through which humans create meaning. Language as a process begins with a function and then develops as the user experiments with the language form necessary to meet the needs of that function. Students use language and learn its functions at the same time (F. Smith, 1983). As a result, children learn language naturally as they interact with others in their environment (Goodman, 1986).

There have been efforts to study family resources and social support systems in coping with stressful life events. This study presented the results of a survey to identify family resources and social support systems that Chinese student families sought in coping with stressful life events. The respondents included forty people from twenty Chinese student families who are presently residing in Lawrence, Kansas, and New York City. The results of the survey, with culture, tradition and value differences in mind, substantiated the sources that Chinese student families were likely to turn to.

A Survey Of Substance Abuse Programs Among Private Four-Year Post-Secondary Institutions, Samuel Justin Iverson

The purpose of this study was to determine the nature and extent of substance abuse prevention, education, intervention, and referral services currently being offered at private four-year post-secondary institutions in three Midwestern states. Respondents provided information about campus alcohol policies, prevention/education services, campus resources, and offered opinions regarding alcohol use and abuse issues. Results of this study are based on responses to 50 surveys or 70.4% of the original sample.

Nearly all 1nstitutions reported having a comprehensive alcohol policy. The formation of these policies were carried out mainly by students, faculty, administration, and staff. Guest speakers and alcohol awareness lectures …

The purpose of this study was to assess the nutritional value of selected Northeast Iowa school lunch programs. This was done by analyzing a consecutive five day sample of the main line lunch from 6 rural schools and 1 metropolitan school. Mean daily nutrient values were obtained through the use of the Dine System for diet analysis. Comparisons were made between the elementary and secondary school lunch programs and also with one-third of the recommended dietary allowances (RDA) and between the urban and rural school programs. Schooling is the common experience of all youth. Teachers, each day, in every class, are dealing with values. The standards that are set, the actions approved, the way the subjects are presented, the teachers personal relations with students, stimulation of consistent thought and acceptable conduct all exert strong influences (The Educational Policies Commission, 1951). It is no longer a question of whether or not educators should teach values, but rather how should this be accomplished .. Through a historical look at values education, teachers can gain the necessary background knowledge which will enable them to incorporate values throughout the curriculum.

Within the past ten years, schools have increasingly embraced the development of the computer as an important media aid in the instruction of problem-solving thinking skills. Cooperative learning strategies, rather than individualistic or competitive learning styles, during this same period, have become a major trend in developing conceptual instructional tasks, including the development of problem-solving strategies. This paper presents a curriculum development project for middle school students that combines the planned activities and outcomes of computer-assisted instruction with cooperative learning to develop problem-solving strategies and positive social skills.

Determinants Of Adopter Categories Using Innovation Diffusion Models, Vijay Mahajan, Eitan Muller, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using the analytical logic underlying the classical adopter categorization approach proposed by Rogers, the authors suggest that adopter categories for a product innovation can also be developed by using other well-established diffusion models such as the Bass model. With data on 11 consumer durable products, they compare adopter categories generated by the classical approach and the Bass diffusion model, respectively. An application examining the diffusion of personal computers is documented to illustrate the usefulness of the adopter categorization based on the Bass diffusion model in studying differences among adopter categories.

Reproductive Health Services throws down the gauntlet on the "most politically divisive domestic legal issue of our time," imperiling women's progress in securing reproductive freedom and power in society. The battle over abortion rights is likely to splinter an already deeply divided country. After fierce fighting in many statehouses, some legislatures will pass statutes further restricting abortion. The major battleground, however, will quickly shift to the federal courts, where plaintiffs seeking to protect procreative freedom will challenge these measures. This year several cases discussed the preemptive effect of the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act upon state law tort and contract claims arising from the sale of cigarettes to smokers who contracted cancer. This is aptly illustrated by Forster v. R. Reynolds Tobacco Co., which was decided by the Minnesota Supreme Court. In that case, the smoker (Forster) sued a cigarette manufacturer (R.J. Reynolds) in strict products liability, misrepresentation, breach of warranty, and negligence. The cigarette manufacturer moved for summary judgment on the ground that the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act preempted all state tort claims. The trial …

A full decade has passed since Enterprise Zones (EZs) were first proposed as a program to help revive the most depressed pockets of America's cities and towns. Activity on the federal level pales in comparison to the impressive variety of approaches found in states throughout the country. In this "second generation of enterprise zones" --that is, state zones in operation-we can observe some marked shifts away from original EZ theory, some impressive and innovative techniques, and some glaring weaknesses. A study was conducted in 1986 by the Education and Library Use Committee of the Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians to determine the educational backgrounds and characteristics of bibliographic instruction (BI) librarians in Wisconsin. The results of the survey indicated that the education for BI has been insufficient and that there is a very real need for additional and/or supplemental education in this area. The methods most preferred for educational enhancement are self-study and workshops. A recommendation was made for one approach to resolving the dilemma: offering a series of courses, in the form of one- to three-day seminars, through …
