A kindergarten class gains practice in reciting the letters of the alphabet by singing "The Alphabet Song." Musical instruments made by third grade children are used in experiments during a science unit on sounds. The mathematical concept of fractions is reinforced when fourth graders calculate musical note values of familiar tunes. Fifth grade students study the Civil War through the examination of lyrics of many songs representative of that era. In all four situations, music was utilized in the teaching of various content areas.

The Effects Of A Cooperative Group Structure On Low-Achieving Students In The Area Of Reading, Lori A. Gross

The outcomes of Chapter 1 students involved in a cooperative group structure during reading were investigated. The study was conducted in a Chapter 1 classroom with two groups of second-grade students. A total of 8 subjects were involved in the study. During the 10-week study, each group was exposed to the experimental treatment for a 5-week period and the control treatment for 5 weeks. A cooperative group structure was implemented during the experimental treatment, with students working in dyads to complete assigned tasks. Huck (1987) believes that illustrations in picture books can enlarge children's experiences, stretch their imaginations, and enhance their living. Over the last two decades significant new information concerning the acquisition of functional literacy has been generated through theoretical and applied research. Traditional notions of literacy as the application by an individual of a set of independent skills to read or write have undergone a tremendous transformation (Langer, 1987). After taking into consideration new and important insights from recent research in the field of literacy, Wells (1990) defines literacy as the "disposition to engage appropriately with texts of different types in order to empower actions, feelings and thinking in the context of purposeful social activity'' (p. 14).

International higher education systems particularly in Japan and the United States, and other selected western countries are in need of student psychological concerns data. There are a number of student environmental and psychological concerns which affect performance in education, such as: learning environments within the family; school and community; students' motivation to learn; professional goals; evaluation of achievement by examinations; and related psychological elements such as anxiety, stress and pressure. This study will survey related student environments and their psychological concerns to provide a better understanding of related international education systems, and how the system affects environmental pressures.

Language is a process through which humans create meaning. Language as a process begins with a function and then develops as the user experiments with the language form necessary to meet the needs of that function. There have been efforts to study family resources and social support systems in coping with stressful life events. This study presented the results of a survey to identify family resources and social support systems that Chinese student families sought in coping with stressful life events. The respondents included forty people from twenty Chinese student families who are presently residing in Lawrence, Kansas, and New York City. The results of the survey, with culture, tradition and value differences in mind, substantiated the sources that Chinese student families were likely to turn to.

The purpose of this study was to determine the nature and extent of substance abuse prevention, education, intervention, and referral services currently being offered at private four-year post-secondary institutions in three Midwestern states. Respondents provided information about campus alcohol policies, prevention/education services, campus resources, and offered opinions regarding alcohol use and abuse issues. Results of this study are based on responses to 50 surveys or 70.4% of the original sample.

The purpose of this study was to assess the nutritional value of selected Northeast Iowa school lunch programs. This was done by analyzing a consecutive five day sample of the main line lunch from 6 rural schools and 1 metropolitan school. Mean daily nutrient values were obtained through the use of the Dine System for diet analysis. Comparisons were made between the elementary and secondary school lunch programs and also with one-third of the recommended dietary allowances (RDA) and between the urban and rural school programs. The standards that are set, the actions approved, the way the subjects are presented, the teachers personal relations with students, stimulation of consistent thought and acceptable conduct all exert strong influences (The Educational Policies Commission, 1951). It is no longer a question of whether or not educators should teach values, but rather how should this be accomplished .. Within the past ten years, schools have increasingly embraced the development of the computer as an important media aid in the instruction of problem-solving thinking skills. Cooperative learning strategies, rather than individualistic or competitive learning styles, during this same period, have become a major trend in developing conceptual instructional tasks, including the development of problem-solving strategies. This paper presents a curriculum development project for middle school students that combines the planned activities and outcomes of computer-assisted instruction with cooperative learning to develop problem-solving strategies and positive social skills.
