Thomas Bullock As An Early Mormon Historian, Jerald F. Simon

Jerald F. Simon writes about Thomas Bullock's life in relation to the effect he had on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given in Bullock's own journals and diaries. Bullock, born in England, immigrated to the United States and quickly found himself employed as a clerk for Joseph Smith, the Nauvoo Masonic Lodge, and steamboat Maid of Iowa, among several other positions. Bullock also worked closely with Brigham Young. He followed the church from Nauvoo to Winter Quarters and into the Great Salt Lake Valley and was pivotal in the beginnings of Deseret News.

Jurisprudential Oaks From Mythical Acorns: The Hart‐Dworkin Debate Revisited, Andrew B.L. Phang

This article attempts to demonstrate, via the famous Hart-Dworkin debate on the nature and functions of judicial discretion, that substantial jurisprudential disputes as well as theories can, and do, arise from misconceived critiques, whether intended or otherwise. It also seeks to show that, whilst Dworkin's initial critique of Hart was misconceived, his theory of adjudication that arose as a result of responses to his initial views is a positive contribution to learning, although I argue that Dworkin's views are not, in the final analysis, sufficiently persuasive to constitute a radical departure from Hart's own views.

From its rather tentative and extremely recent beginnings, I the law relating to economic duress has developed at a relatively rapid pace during the last decade or so. We have had a series of decisions from various courts and jurisdictions* which, collectively at least, affirm the existence of the doctrine in English law. The pronouncements at the highest levels, however, have not purported to be definitive, and, as we shall see, have certainly not aided in a clarification and systematization of the doctrine of economic duress. The problems pertaining to the reception of English law in Singapore are both numerous and complex. The academic literature generated in the local sphere alone is relatively large. It must, however, be conceded that, from apractical point of view, there has been very little interest or at least discussion. One cannot, of course, be sure about this observation, save for the very strong indication that takes the form of the overwhelming lack of litigation in the area, thus rendering it merely (so it appears) an academic monopoly. Despite advances in surgical technique, management of ruptured tendon still presents a challenge and continues to be among the most difficult rehabilitation management problem (Enwemeka, 1989 a). Unlike most soft tissues, tendons require several weeks of healing in plaster cast immobilization after surgical repair (Nistor, 1981). In cases of Achilles tendon ruptures, the period of immobilization may last as long as 12 weeks, producing muscle atrophy , articular cartilage atrophy, skin necrosis and tendocuta-neous adhesions {Garden et al., 1987). The foetal trophoblast behaves as a homograft in the maternal host, yet it survives. This referes to modulation of maternal immune system to antigeni-cally foreign foetus and placenta. Various investigations demonstrated slight depression of maternal immune system during pregnancy, but the mother does not develop specific immunologi-cal tolerance to the foetus. The depression was expressed by increased number of suppressor cells (Moore et al.,1983), reduced activity of natural killer (Gall, 1983). Rocklin et al. (1976) demonstrate the prescence of immunologic blocking factor in the sera of normal pregnant multigravida women. This factor is absent from the sera of untrans- fused …

Non papillary insitu carcinoma of urothelium denudes unusually easily. This uncovering produces a characteristic, syndrome of intractable antibiotic-resistant bacterial cystitis with a granular and velvet appearance on cystoscopy. the exposed stroma histo-logically demonstrate vasodilatation, oedema and leucocytic infiltration re-suiting in clinical symptoms which are the same as those of benign cystitis due to other causes (Riddle et al., 1979; Ooms et al,, 1986 and Boob et al., 1986). Exfoliative cytology plays an important roie in the diagnosis of cervical malignancy, being of particular value in the detection of pre-invasive lesions of the cervix (Soostetal., 1981). The incidence of cervical intraepi-thelial neoplasia is increased among the chronically infected lacerated cervices with benign lesions like polypi and cervices that bleed on touch, such cervices are known as unhealthy looking or suspicious cervices. The study included 731 full term babies aged 1-6 days, presented with hyperbilirubinaemia (S.bilirubin > 12 mg/dl) in the period from 1985 to 1989. The babies and their mothers were subjected to I) full history taking and thorough clinical examination 2) determination of S. bi Itrubtn, Hb% and reticulocyte count in infants 3) blood group typing ABO, Rho and antibody screening for mothers and babies, tn some instances they were typed for other blood group systems. 4) IgG antibodies (anti-A and anti-B) was done in ABO incompatible pregnancies. Acute renal failure after biliary tract surgery was first described by Clair-mont and VonHaberer {1911}. The cause of supression of renal function in patients with obstructive jaundice is controversial. Dawson (1964) suggested deficient renal perfusion. He reported significant improvement of kindey function following mannitol diuresis. Endotoxaemia has a deleterious effect on renal function and structure. Endotoxaemia is due to absence of bile salts from the small itestine (Cavanough et at. 1970) and Mckay et al. (1966). Amoebiasis is a major health problem. In Egypt an incidence of 8.9-31% was reported In Dakahlia Governo-rate, Sheir et al. (1979) found that the incidence of amaebiasis was 62.5%. Patients with invasive amaebiasis suffer from intestinal ulceration with hea-matophagues trophozoites in their stools (Rees, 1986). Sera of patients with invasive amaebiasis or harbouring pathogenic strains of E. histolytica contain specific anti-amoebic antibodies, while those harbouring non pathogenic strains are usually serologicaliy negative (Healy, 1971; Nilson et al., 1980 and Jackson, 1985). In rheumatoid arthritis, the build up of fibrin within the joint may be responsible for some form of chronic inflammation and joint manifestations including pannus formation and polymorph induced cartilage destruction (Belch et al., 1984).
