Particle Production Characteristics In Central Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions At 14.6, 60 And 200 Gev/Nucleon., Oscar Edwin Pruet

Nuclear emulsions have been exposed to a series of relativistic heavy ion beams at Brookhaven National Laboratory ($\sp{16}$O and $\sp{28}$Si nuclei at 14.6 GeV/nucleon) and CERN ($\sp{16}$O nuclei at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon and $\sp{32}$S nuclei at 200 GeV/nucleon). These beams represent the highest energies currently available for heavy projectiles. Central collisions between the beam nuclei and the heavy emulsion components $\sp{108}$Ag and $\sp{80}$Br have been compared with proton-emulsion data at equivalent energies. The multiplicities of produced charged particles are generally consistent with a conservative superposition model of nucleus-nucleus interactions. The pseudo-rapidity distributions of produced particles are gaussian in their …

Environmental concerns emphasize the requirement for diagnostic tools compatible with more intensively managed agricultural systems. Two recent approaches, the Barber-Cushman mechanistic model and the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS), appear to offer more accurate predictions of soil nutrient supply and more flexible means of assessing plant nutrient status, respectively, than conventional methods. The objectives of this research were to verify the aforementioned models for predicting K uptake and assessing P and K status of LA S-1 white clover. This thesis presents an efficient and integrated approach to integrity constraint checking for advanced database systems. The proposed approach essentially consists of three phases: constraint decomposition, global enforcement strategy and local enforcement tuning. The central theme of this dissertation is the development of constraint decomposition theory, which can be used to decompose each constraint formula into a set of constraint sub-formulas. The constraint sub-formulas derived from the decomposition satisfy the sufficient conditions imposed by the original constraint and are also much simpler and more efficient to check. The oratorios of George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) contain many outstanding arias. The typical aria is ordinarily diatonic and is a combination of symmetrical and asymmetrical phrase-lengths. Although sharing the same basic musical style, these arias are often quite different. Their ranges extend from the interval of a minor seventh to two octaves and sixty-six percent of them are set in forms other than da capo. In addition, the oratorio arias display a diversity of orchestration ranging from continuo arias to those that call for as many as eighteen different instruments. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of self-evaluation by beginning wind instrumental students of defined musical and behavioral objectives. Specific areas in which effects were studied included attitude, physical playing fundamentals, and musical/technical skill development. Attitudes examined included students' attitude toward (a) school, (b) band, (c) instrument, (d) practice, (e) band director, and (f) self. Behavioral/musical objectives examined included (a) tone; pitch; rhythm notes (technical accuracy); and playing position (posture, embouchure, hand position); and (b) "practiced at home.". Ernest Guiraud (1837-1892) was born in New Orleans, where he received his early musical training from his parents, both graduates of the Paris Conservatoire. His father, Jean-Baptiste Guiraud, had won the Prix de Rome in 1827. Ernest's first opera, David, was staged at the Theatre d'Orleans in April 1853. Later that year Ernest entered the Paris Conservatoire; he studied piano with Marmontel, harmony with Barbereau, and composition with Halevy. He won the Prix de Rome in 1859. During the three years (1860-1862) Guiraud spent in Italy as a Prix de Rome laureate, he composed a mass, an opera-buffa (Gli avventurieri), …

The Smackover-Buckner sequence in the Jay-Big Escambia Creek area has three major lithostratigraphic units: lower Smackover, upper Smackover, and Buckner with an uppermost Smackover transitional sequence. The lower Smackover is regionally extensive, mostly low energy subtidal to intertidal, dolomitized packstones with abundant displacive anhydrite nodules. The upper Smackover is characterized by thick oolite-peloid high energy grainstone buildups generated over Louann salt induced bathymetric highs which were surrounded by areas of low energy, subtidal mudstones-wackestones. The Buckner is mostly nodular mosaic anhydrite with minor amounts of dolomite mudstones-packstones. Below the Smackover-Buckner contact in the grainstone areas is a transitional sequence (referred …

Surface feature maps were derived from color-infrared aerial photographs for Louisiana's Timbalier Island and Eastern Isles Dernieres. These provided a basis for the implementation of a barrier island Geographic Information System (GIS), a quantitative spatial framework through which specific proximal and temporal interactions could be examined. This system was utilized to observe relationships between changes in island shorelines and surface areas relative to location and extent of island cover categories. It was further employed to test the applicability of the rollover and deltaic barrier cycle models of island dynamics within the context of the Louisiana coastal environment. This dissertation consists of two parts, both of which share a common link through their inspiration from Hinduism. Part I is an analysis of Hovhaness's Symphony No. 19 (Vishnu). Part II is an original composition in three movements for orchestra entitled Kshetrajna. Hovhaness's Symphony No. 19 (Vishnu), composed between July and August, 1966, in Luzern, Switzerland, is a single movement work of tripartite structure, for symphony orchestra. The title, Vishnu, refers to the second person of the Hindu trinity, whose name is a remarkable metaphor for the explosive energies and sustaining forces of the universe. Previous investigations have characterized both the genomic and antigenic variations in equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) surface glycoproteins that arise during replication of the virus. DNA sequence analyses have defined regions of conserved and variable sequences localized in the EIAV envelope glycoproteins. These studies indicate that EIAV persistence and periodicity of clinical disease result from the relatively rapid evolution of antigenic variants which allows the virus to temporarily circumvent the host immune response. The primary objective of this work is the complete characterization of the immunogenic components of the EIAV env-encoded surface unit (SU) and transmembrane (TM) glycoproteins. These surface …

In Experiment I, stallion exposure to an estrous mare on d 2 caused cortisol and PRL concentrations to increase (P $$.05) on d 1, 3, 4, 5 or 6 when no exposure occurred. In Experiment II, cortisol concentrations increased (P $<$.05) within 10 min after sexual stimulation (SS), physical exercise (PE), restraint via a twitch (RT) and epinephrine administration (EA) but not during control bleedings. PRL concentrations increased (P $<$.05) following SS, PE and RT but not after EA or during control bleedings. In Experiment III, cortisol concentrations in geldings increased (P $<$.05) following EA, PE and RT but not following SS or control bleedings. PRL concentrations increased (P $<$.05) following PE and SS. In Experiment IV, sulpiride injection was used in stallions in an attempt to increase PRL concentrations. Prior to sulpiride treatment, concentrations of both cortisol and PRL increased (P $<$.05) by 40 to 80% in response to exercise; concentrations of LH and FSH also increased (P $<$.05) by approximately 10%. Sulpiride treatment stimulated (P $<$.05) daily PRL secretion by approximately 5-fold, and caused a decrease (P $<$.05) in daily FSH secretion whereas only isolated differences (P $<$.05) occurred between treatment groups for daily LH and cortisol secretion. At the end of treatment, there was no PRL response to exercise for stallions treated with sulpiride, but there was (P $<$.05) for control stallions; only control stallions exhibited a marginal cortisol response (P $<$.05) to exercise. The PRL response to TRH was increased (P $<$.05) 4-fold in stallions treated with sulpiride but was unchanged in control stallions. Sulpiride treatment did not affect (P $>$.05) the LH or FSH response to exogenous GnRH. We conclude that: (1) returning stallions to the site of a previous period of sexual excitement does not cause a memory-mediated rise in cortisol or prolactin; (2) cortisol and PRL are secreted rapidly in response to some but not all forms of physical and chemical stress in stallions and geldings; …

Despite ongoing theoretical, empirical and practical interest, research findings have been inconclusive. Literature reviews indicate that there still exists much confusion concerning the relationship between satisfaction and performance. The effects of the discussion of and the drawing of political cartoons as prewriting activities to increase fifth and sixth graders' ability to write persuasively were investigated. The subjects were 53 males and 49 females from two fifth grade and two sixth grade classes in a university laboratory school. The study was a randomized, pretest-posttest control group design with two treatment groups (discussion of political cartoons and drawing of political cartoons) and two control groups (discussion of a topic and drawing about a topic). The relationship between variability of practice and contextual interference was investigated in this study. The hypothesis proposed here was that these two effects are compatible, in that each addresses different learning situations. That is, the contextual interference effect relates only to situations where skill variations are controlled by different generalized motor programs, while practice variability relates only to situations where skill variations are parameter modifications of the same generalized motor program (Magill & Hall, in press). Neutral impurity scattering is a relatively untouched subject because it is only significant at very low temperatures. With the development of a new class of impurity band conduction devices that operate at cryogenic temperatures, it becomes necessary to describe the scattering in a more realistic fashion. We have calculated both elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons by substitional As in n-type Si, taking into account the anisotropy of the host band structure. Specifically, in regard to inelastic scattering, we calculated the differential and integrated cross sections for transitions from the ground state to the valley-orbit split states $\Gamma\sb{15}$ and $\Gamma\sb{12}$. …

A growing body of research suggests that the efferent innervation to the cochlea, the olivocochlear bundle, plays a role in modulating the mechanical function of the cochlea. Some of the more provocative findings supporting an hypothesis of OCB modulation have come from studies which assessed efferent influences on tuning curves and acoustic distortion products, two measures thought to be sensitive indicators of cochlear mechanical function. The compact quotients of three-dimensional solvable non-nilpotent Lie groups by discrete subgroups fall into two categories; those which are quotients of $S\sb{R}$ (semidirect product, R acts on R$\sp2$ by rotation), and those which are quotients of $S\sb{H}$ = $R\ \propto\ R\sp2$ (semidirect product, $R$ acts on $R\sp2$ via translation along a hyperbolic orbit). Continuous functions in the primary summands of $L\sp2$ of each type of solvmanifold are examined. The synthesis and characterization of linear and star branched poly($\gamma$-stearyl-L-glutamate) (PSLG) is reported. A new synthesis for N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) monomers was developed by employing bis(trichloromethyl)carbonate (triphosgene) to functionalize the corresponding $\alpha$-amino acid. Multi-functional primary amino initiators (central units) were synthesized to enable the production of three, four, six and nine arm star polymers by reaction of the central units with the desired NCA. Linear PSLG was produced by either sodium methoxide initiation or benzyl amine initiation of $\gamma$-stearyl-L-glutamate-N-carboxyanhydride (SLGNCA). In the first experiment, the temperature humidity index (THI) was compared with pregnancy rates (PR) in bovine females under two different environmental cooling systems. The PR decreased if the THI was greater on the second day prior to or after mating compared with that of the day of mating. In the second experiment, the stages of embryo mortality in the first 40 days of gestation were identified in the hot and cool seasons of the year. At day 13 or 14 of pregnancy 27% of embryos were viable in the hot months, which was less than 60% at day 13 …

Vibrio anguillarum exhibits species-specific antigens on the protein core of the polar flagellum (H) and H-determinants which are expressed by heterologous Vibrio species. Monoclonal antibody (MAb) which reacted with flagella core protein by ELISA were affinity purified from protein A-sepharose. Staphylococcus aureus Cowan 1 cells armed with anti-H MAb coagglutinated each of the 10 V. anguillarum O-antigen serovars within 1 to 2 minutes, as well as V. ordalii isolates. These findings suggest these two vibrios express similar if not identical species-specific H-determinants. The anti-H reagent did not coagglutinate 20 heterologous Vibrio species. Pith to bark wood specific gravity (SG) trends were measured in tropical trees and compared with trends found in temperate trees. Extraordinary increases were found across the stems of some tropical wet forest colonizing species, with most tropical species showing at least moderate increases. In contrast, temperate species showed little change, and decreases were almost as common as increases. In Chapter One (published in Wood Fiber Sci. 20(3):344-349), three colonizing species in tropical wet forest were found to produce low SG wood when small and to linearly increase SG with diameter growth. The first step in the common tetrapyrrole pathway in Rhodobacter capsulatus is the condensation of glycine with succinyl CoA to form 5-aminolevulinate which is then used in the synthesis of bacteriochlorophyll, heme, vitamin B-12, and siroheme. To isolate mutants unable to form 5-aminolevulinate, as a first step in studying regulation of the tetrapyrrole pathway, R. capsulatus was mated with E. coli carrying plasmid pSUP2021. pSUP2021 carries transposon Tn5 and is incapable of replicating in R. capsulatus making it an ideal vector for transposon mutagenesis. The effects of daylength decline rates and relative humidity levels and durations on pollen viability and seed setting of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) were investigated. Two studies were carried out at St. Gabriel Research Station of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. Daylength decline rates of one half and one minute per day were studied on 354 crosses made within three years using 54 males and 92 females. Males treated with one half minute daylength decline rate had higher pollen viability. Seed production was not affected by the treatments. The effects of in utero and neonatal exposure to maternal Brugia pahangi infections on the development of homologous infections, immune responses, and pathologic lesions was studied in age-matched progeny of infected and uninfected female jirds. High IgG antibody titers to B. pahangi antigens were present in the sera of progeny from infected mothers. These neonatal titers to homologous antigens were shown to be of maternal origin, and did not alter the cellular responses of uninfected progeny as measured by in vitro antigen-stimulated blastogenesis and in vivo pulmonary granulomatous inflammatory responses to antigen-coated beads. This dissertation is divided into three chapters. Chapter one describes attempts to synthesize bis-monosubstituted cyclopentadienyl compounds as probes for complexation to transition metals. Prior to the attempted synthesis of bis-monosubstituted cyclopentadienyl compounds, the syntheses of two different organic frameworks bearing a C$\sb2$-symmetry axis is described; namely, the 1,3-dioxolane-2,2-dimethyl and the 1,1$\sp\prime$-binaphthyl frameworks.
