Life Experience And Teen Fatherhood In Great Britain, Kirk Allen Dearden

The present investigation uses the 1958 National Child Development Study of Great Britain to examine the antecedents of teen fatherhood. Teen fathers are compared to non-teen fathers (those who fathered a child between 20 and 23) and non-fathers (no child by 23), matched and unmatched to teen fathers for social class. Contrary to hypotheses regarding family background, teen fathers (boys who became fathers while in their teens) were no more likely than those who did not father children before their 23rd birthday to come from homes marked by parental separation, divorce, and death. This paper examines the influence of litigation costs on deterrence under strict liability and under negligence. By deterrence, I refer to the effect of the threat of liability on the care exercised by potential injurers. More precisely, this paper takes litigation costs as given and examines the social desirability of the levels of care exercised under negligence and under strict liability.

Costly Litigation And Legal Error Under Negligence, Keith N. Hylton

In this article, private enforcement under negligence when there is legal error and litigation is costly is examined. Ordover (1978) demonstrated that in a negligence regime in which there is no legal error and litigation is costly, equilibrium requires the presence of actors who refuse to obey the due-care standard. Accordingly, in such a negligence regime, an undercompliance equilibrium must result. Since the existence of litigation costs implies that the socially optimal level of care is greater than that required by the traditional Hand formula, which defines negligence as a failure to take care where the cost of taking care …

This work includes: (1) a search for charge transfer interaction involving hexamethyldipyrromethene (HL) as a donor; (2) a spectroscopic study of hexamethyldipyrromethene anion (L$\sp-$), and, (3) an investigation of the spectroscopic characteristic of the copper chelate CuL$\sb2$. There are presented reactions in which HL may react with some electron acceptors. It is reported that TCNE interacts with HL to form a 1:1 complex that has an equilibrium constant of (2.5 0.9) $\times$ 10$\sp{15}$. Spectroscopic results indicate that haloacetones also interact with HL. Hexamethyldipyrromethene is a molecule that consists of two methyl substituted pyrrole rings joined by means of a vinyl …

Research was conducted to determine the impact of the allelochemical, $\alpha$-tomatine, on the susceptibility of the lepidopterous pests, Heliothis zea (Boddie) and Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) to the entomogenous fungus, Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson. In one experiment, $\alpha$-tomatine inhibited colony formation and growth of N. rileyi, in vitro. In vivo, larval growth and developmental time of H. zea were affected by $\alpha$-tomatine and N. rileyi. The fungus was detected in the hemolymph and tissue of larvae treated with two concentrations (LC$\sb{50}$ and LC$\sb{90}$) of N. rileyi conidia, including those fed $\alpha$-tomatine. Vibrio species, normal inhabitants of the sea and of shellfish harvested from marine or brackish waters, have been established as the causative agents of serious human infections. An investigation to isolate and identity Vibrio species in oysters collected from eight Louisiana commercial oyster beds was conducted. A selection of 127 vibrio isolates and 46 reference strains, including all known Vibrio species, were subjected to a bacteriological identification scheme of 46 parameters. When the data from the wild strains and the reference strains were analyzed by the numerical taxonomy program, TAXAN Version 3.0, six major phena were evident. Four of the …

A model was developed to predict daily change in WT depth and was used for WT management simulations. The model was calibrated and tested using climatological and WT data for a subsurface drainage system at Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station's Ben Hur Research Farm, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Monthly daily reaction factor and daily recharge coefficient were determined. Recharge coefficients were multiplied by a correction factor to account for antecedent soil moisture condition prior to the onset of rain. This dissertation explores the agency problems of REITs caused by the conflicts of interest between the REIT sponsor and the REIT shareholders. It also tests the impact of the agency problems on the pricing of REIT initial public offerings (IPOs) and on the valuation effects of secondary debt and equity offerings. Like the IPOs of ordinary corporations, REIT IPOs are also underpriced; however, the magnitude of the underpricing is far lower than that of the IPOs for ordinary corporations. Captive REITs have greater underpricing in IPOs than non-captive REITs. REIT secondary equity offerings exhibit negative announcement effects, while secondary debt …

The channel catfish herpesvirus (CCV) encodes a thymidine kinase (Tk) which is biochemically distinguishable from it's host, the channel catfish ovary (CCO), and other herpesvirus Tk's. Tk deficient CCO cells (CCOBr) were developed by propagating CCO cells in increasing concentrations of 5-bromo-2$\sp\prime$-deoxyuridine (BUdR). CCV infection produced high Tk activity in these Tk deficient cells. This activity was compared to CCO-Tk in ATP and CTP phosphate donor assays, nucleoside substrate-competition and dTTP feedback inhibition assays. The viral Tk was more competitively inhibited by deoxypurines than cellular Tk and showed less dTTP mediated feedback inhibition. CCO-Tk utilized lower concentrations of ATP more …

Whole rock and mineral compositions of epiclastic volcanic cobbles have been used to reconstruct the evolution of the magmatic system that supplied this volcanic material. Using techniques that have been applied to stratified volcanic deposits, the chemical and mineralogical variation of volcanic material preserved as cobbles in sedimentary rocks has been used to identify a cogenetic suite of igneous rocks and to evaluate possible fractionation mechanisms. Volcanic rocks, preserved as rounded cobbles in the upper Cretaceous Woodbine Formation of SW Arkansas, range from mafic, pyroxene-rich phonolites to felsic, crystal-poor phonolites. Volatile compounds from two protein-rich foods, crabmeat and eggs, were studied with emphasis on qualitative and quantitative determination of a wide variety of chemical substances including degradation compounds from amino acids, lipids and carboyhdrates as well as compounds derived from the packaging material and the environment. Boiled and pasteurized blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) meat samples were analyzed for volatile flavor components by dynamic headspace sampling, capillary column gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Fifty-three volatile compounds were identified in crabmeat samples. Levels of volatile compounds in both samples were compared and it was found that the boiled crabmeat contained higher levels …

A new synthetic route for the preparation of $\alpha$-halobenzylsilanes is reported. The new route is based on carbene generation from diazirines and insertion into the silicon-hydrogen bond. Phenylhalocarbenes were generated by the thermal decomposition of 3-halo-3-phenyldiazirines. The reaction was carried out without solvent and with use of an excess of halodiazirine. This methodology is very versatile in allowing for a variety of different aryl substituents at the benzylic position in the targeted $\alpha$-halobenzylsilanes. The synthesis and rearrangement under Lewis-acid catalyzed conditions of 1-methyl-1-(dichloromethyl)silacyclopentane and 1-ethyl-1-(dichloromethyl)silacyclopentane is reported. Relationship dissolution is a complex process that involves more than the act of termination. The process affects and is affected by an individual's communication with members of the social network. The attributions made by the individual to account for the dissolution constitute an attempt at failure management. This study was undertaken to determine how the strategies used to manage the failure event of divorce vary according to social network groups, gender, and expectation of approval. Growth characteristics for fetal bovine uterine fibroblast cells (FBUFC) and frozen-thawed bovine (b) and caprine (g) trophoblastic vesicles (TV) were similar in (A) Ham's F-10 (HF-10), (B) MEM (with Earle's salts), (C) RPMI-1640 and (D) Menezo's B$\sb2$ (B$\sb2$), each supplemented with 10% FCS and Ab-Am (Experiment (Exp) I). Cell numbers declined initially but increased linearly thereafter for 5 days. The bTV and gTV that survived freezing had similar viability across time and Treatments (Trt). Exp II compared the (A) bTV, (B) FBUFC monolayer and (C) bTV-monolayer co-culture systems to (D) HF-10 alone for culture of 8- to 32-cell bovine embryos. …

Nuclear emulsions have been exposed to a series of relativistic heavy ion beams at Brookhaven National Laboratory ($\sp{16}$O and $\sp{28}$Si nuclei at 14.6 GeV/nucleon) and CERN ($\sp{16}$O nuclei at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon and $\sp{32}$S nuclei at 200 GeV/nucleon). These beams represent the highest energies currently available for heavy projectiles. Central collisions between the beam nuclei and the heavy emulsion components $\sp{108}$Ag and $\sp{80}$Br have been compared with proton-emulsion data at equivalent energies. The multiplicities of produced charged particles are generally consistent with a conservative superposition model of nucleus-nucleus interactions. The pseudo-rapidity distributions of produced particles are gaussian in their …

Environmental concerns emphasize the requirement for diagnostic tools compatible with more intensively managed agricultural systems. Two recent approaches, the Barber-Cushman mechanistic model and the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS), appear to offer more accurate predictions of soil nutrient supply and more flexible means of assessing plant nutrient status, respectively, than conventional methods. The objectives of this research were to verify the aforementioned models for predicting K uptake and assessing P and K status of LA S-1 white clover.
