Abstract Those who believe education should involve more than learning facts often stress either (a) development or (b) thinking skills. A focus on development as a goal of education typically entails a conception of knowledge as organismic, holistic, and internally generated. In contrast, thinking skills programs commonly assume a mechanistic, reductionist perspective in which good thinking consists of some finite number of directly teachable skills. A conception of rationality as a goal of education is proposed that incorporates the complementary strengths and avoids the limitations of the developmental and thinking skills approaches. Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko (1853-1921) turned his personal experiences as a political prisoner in Siberia into short stories that champion the talents of Siberia's ordinary people. These stories of Siberia have been noted by critics for their techniques of composition. His contemporaries like A. P. Chekhov and V. M. Garshin praise his craftsmanship and skill to compose aesthetically appealing short stories. Leighton shows how Korolenko, in order to reveal and document facts about different human beings, utilizes various literary devices such as particularized narration (skaz), allegory, contrast, parallel, and lyrical description. The issue we are addressing here concerns how – or if -- we can take non-serious language seriously, or even legitimate it. Derrida wishes to consider marginal, parasitic, borderline cases, because they give him “insight into the general functioning of a textual system.” If we simply identify and banish the parasite, we will end up retracing the boundaries of convention; if we look at the parasite as part of a whole system, then our perspective goes beyond that of the insider. Estimating Nest Success: When Mayfield Wins, Douglas H. Johnson, Terry L. Shaffer

The Apparent estimator of nest success may be severely biased because unsuccessful nests are less likely to be found than are successful nests. The Mayfield estimator is a preferred alternative. The situation is somewhat different for nests in colonies or on islands because of greater visibility of nests, higher synchrony of nesting, and often higher hatch rates than dispersed mainland nests. Also, destruction is more likely to occur catastrophically, which violates an assumption of the Mayfield method that the mortality rate is constant. By simulation we investigated the performance of the Apparent and Mayfield estimators under a variety of circumstances. …

Sediment Production From Forest Roads With Wheel Ruts, Randy B. Foltz, Edward R. Burroughs, Jr.

Artificial rainfall was applied to two sets of paired plots 30.5 m long by 1.52 m wide, each set on a different soil type. One plot in each set contained a wheel rut while the other did not. Measurements of water and sediment yield on rutted plots showed sediment production declined with cumulative runoff while unrutted plots did not show a significant sediment depletion. This difference was a result of concentrated flow versus sheet flow.

Degradation Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Capsid Protein During Leaf Senescence, Myron K. Brakke, Rose N. Skopp, L. C. Lane

Wheat streak mosaic virus capsid protein degraded in vivo by proteolysis as leaves senesced. The capsid protein of virus purified from young systemically infected leaves had an apparent size or 45 kDa in 12% sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels with minor amounts of 43, 42, 33, and 3E kDa proteins. The proportion of smaller proteins increased with the age of the leaf. In some virus preparations only 3 1 kDa capsid protein was detected. In vitro proteolysis of virions with 45 kDa protein produced virions with 31 kDa protein. Virions with 31 kDa capsid protein sedimented slightly more slowly than those …

Identification Of Single Meloidogyne Juveniles By Polymerase Chain Reaction Amplification Of Mitochondrial Dna, T. S. Harris, L. J. Sandall, Thomas O. Powers

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify a specific 1.8-kb sequence of mitochondrial DNA from single juveniles and eggs from 17 populations of Meloidogyne incognita, M. hapla, M. javanica, and M. arenaria. Approximately 2 μg amplified product were produced per reaction. Restriction digestion of the amplified product with HinfI permitted discrimination of clonal lineages of the four species. Meloidogyne javanica, however, could not be separated from M. hapla by the enzymes used in these experiments.
