Trampling Disturbance And Recovery Of Cryptogamic Soil Crusts In Grand Canyon National Park, David N. Cole

Cryptogamic soil crusts in Grand Canyon National Park were trampled by hikers, under controlled conditions, to determine how rapidly they were pulverized and how rapidly they recovered. Only 15 trampling passes were required to destroy the structure of the crusts; visual evidence of bacteria and cryptogam cover was reduced to near zero after 50 passes. Soil crusts redeveloped in just one to three years, and after five years the extensive bacteria and cryptogam cover left little visual evidence of disturbance. Surface irregularity remained low after five years, however, suggesting that recovery was incomplete.

Emergence, Attack Densities, And Host Relationships For The Douglas-Fir Beetle (Dendroctonus Pseudotsugae Hopkins) In Northern Colorado, E. D. Lessard, J. M. Schmid

Douglas-fir beetle-infested Douglas-fir trees were partially caged to determine the emergence period and beetle production. Beetles began emerging in April, but emergence peaked between 10 and 26 June. In 1987 and 1988 beetle emergence averaged 20 or more per sq. ft. of bark. Annual growth of the infested trees showed a decline prior to the beetle outbreak followed by an increase during the outbreak.

Since its creation in 1959, IMO has developed some thirty (30) conventions and protocols besides the many codes and recommendations prescribing the highest practicable global standards, procedures and practices for maritime safety and the protection of the marine environment. IMO achievements, which constitute the first step in establishing the desire standards, need the implementation of the appropriate standards and other relating activities affecting national flag ships. The paper analyses the maritime safety affairs and practices presently existing in Guyana in order to find the most suitable solutions for its improvement. Arising out of this analysis a model is subsequently developed to effectively establish a functioning Maritime Safety Administration capable of fulfilling the present and future needs of the country in respect of safety of ships and personnel associated with them. The model fundamentally covers activities that fall within the ambit of Maritime Safety Administration namely casualty investigations, port state control and marine pollution prevention. The necessary infrastructure and legislation is also duly reflected.
