Orbits about the Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, previously found to be stable by the Poincare surface of section technique in a restricted three- body system, were investigated with non-zero eccentricity of the moons added to the dynamics of the planar four-body system (Mars, moon sun, artificial satellite). Although not strictly applicable to this case, the surface of section technique was used to verify whether or not the previously found stable orbits were realistic when a real world perturbation was added to the system dynamics. A process was developed to produce three dimensional images using computer generated holography (CGH). This process consisted of a series of steps that began with a geometric description of an object and concluded with a three dimensional holographic image being computed from a synthetic wavefront. The objects used in this series of steps (or CGH pipeline) were described geometrically as a collection of three dimensional points. The modular nature of the CGH pipeline provided a flexible platform from which to evaluate various object geometries, interference calculations algorithms, and interference pattern recording and reduction techniques. This study investigated software component representation methods. Hypermedia was chosen as the implementation method to represent a collection of reusable software components. The hypermedia implementation organizes knowledge about the component collection into a web of small information chunks called frames. The set of software components was represented using a hybrid classification scheme composed of enumerated and faceted parts. The enumerated part enables the user to progress along a path in a taxonomic tree, narrowing the scope of eligible components. The purpose of this thesis effort was to develop and test a brightness invariant recognition algorithm that would locate and identify the half-scale mock up of a Universal Aerial Refueling Receptacle Slipway Installation (UARRSI) aerial refueling port in different lightening conditions. This was accomplished by developing a brightness invariant port recognition of identifiable attributes of the refueling port to locate and identify the UARRSI port. Based on this approach, a brightness invariant port recognition system (BIPRS) was demonstrated which identified the refueling receptacle in different lightening conditions. The BIPRS was also invariant to orientation and size of the UARRSI port. …

This study investigated the effectiveness of the Least Means Squared (LMS) algorithm against various types of common jammers. The LMS algorithm was implemented using the Block Oriented Systems Simulator (BOSS). The LMS algorithm was inserted at the output of a two element antenna array. The array was configured so as to have one-half wavelength spacing. A quadrature hybrid signal structure was used. The array was then tested against a barrage and sweep jammer. This study used integrated circuit microsensors to detect organophosphorus compounds. Chemically-sensitive thin films, copper phthalocyanine, DFPase, succinyl chloride, succinylcholine chloride, 2- naphthol(B), and L-histidine dihydrochloride,were deposited on interdigitated gate electrode (IGE) structures, with an average thickness of 2000A. Thin film electrical performance characteristics were measured for several parameters, including: DC resistance, AC impedance, time-domain, and spectral responses from 10 Hz to 1 MHz. Each microsensor contained nine IGEs; each IGE possessed an in situ field-effect transistor amplifier. The optical sensors of United States Air Force reconnaissance vehicles, such as satellites, are subject to temporary or permanent blinding from hostile (or threat) laser radiation. By detecting and determining the angle of arrival (AOA) of the hostile radiation, the reconnaissance vehicle may be able to protect its optical sensors by taking evasive maneuvers or by shutting down the optical sensor (such as closing a shutter) until the threat has passed. Probability of bit error (Pb) performance for a turbulent, atmospheric, optical, communications link with convolutional error detection and correction coding was investigated. The codes investigated were all rate 1/2 codes with constraint lengths ranging from 3 to 7. It was assumed that the coded data stream was sufficiently interleaved so that the turbulent channel could be considered memoryless. A theoretical bound on P_b, given by Viterbi for a memoryless channel, was used to plot curves of P_b versus the signal intensity of last transmitter. The purpose of this research was to determine if the Air Force's current method of training untrained individuals to use contractor developed automated information management software is producing the desired levels of productivity and the effectiveness of the training. The study found that greater emphasis must be placed on developing and supporting the use of a standardized training program for the managers and users of automated information management software. Failure Mechanisms In A Quasi-Isotropic Ceramic Composite Laminate Under Tensile Fatigue Loading, Gregory D. Tracy

A study was conducted to experimentally investigate the tensile fatigue damage mechanisms in a quasi-isotropic ceramic matrix composite (Corning's Nicalon/CASIII). The goals of this study were to (1) develop a grip fixture for a servo-hydraulic MTS test machine and (2) conduct a series of tests with (0/±45/90)s specimens subjected to tensile fatigue loading to study their fatigue damage growth mechanisms. Results showed that when the material was subjected to stresses below 90 MPa, it lasted over 1000000 cycles but when stressed at or above 90 MPa, it failed in less than 1000 cycles.

Previous studies predicted the F-15B high angle of attack and flat spin behavior using bifurcation analysis. These studies varied control surface deflections to find equilibrium and periodic solutions. The purpose of this research was to use bifurcation analysis to predict the F-15B high angle attack and flat spin behavior as a result of variable thrust, asymmetric thrust, and thrust vectoring. Using a previously developed model of the F-15, bifurcation analysis and continuation methods were used to map out the equilibrium and periodic solutions of the model as a function of the thrust parameters. The prediction of chromatographic retention times for a wide range of chemical compounds has been a subject of interest and intense study during the past few decades. Several of these studies are discussed, in particular those which utilize empirical parameters of solvent polarity in a correlation to chromatographic retention. Subjective semi-quantitative method is often used to evaluate the severity of spasticity in clinical condition. The purpose of this study is to develope an objective and quantitative model to evaluate the severity of spasticity for hemiplegic patients. We utilize Kin-Corn III isokinetic machine to evaluate 16 hemiplegic patients with 8 velocities from 5 to 210 degrees per second. The elbow joints of subjects are pulled when subjects totally relaxed and under no influence of gravity. The curve of resistance force was recorded and analyzed. The first level is an investigation of urban design and will deal with the development of a city within the city using a multi-programatic complex, as the vehicle. A number of studies has shown that providing extrinsic rewards for performing an "intrinsically interesting" task decreases an individual's subsequent interest in that task when the rewards are no longer available (e.g., Deci, 1971, 1972; Lepper, Greene, & Nisbett, 1973). Based on these results, many have argued that extrinsic rewards decrease an individual's "intrinsic motivation." A fundamental premise of this argument is that "extrinsic" and "intrinsic motivation" are functionally different, a distinction that is not supported by a behavioral analysis. This study examined and evaluated several scale factor linearization techniques for a fiber optic rotation rate sensor (FORS). The process of scale factor linearization retrieves rotation rate from an FORS signal. Open and closed loop digital signal processing schemes are evaluated on dynamic range, accuracy, and cost.

The results of these experiments show that open loop schemes require few components but have an inherently low dynamic range of operation. Extending the dynamic range of an open loop system is expensive in additional components. Closed loop systems require more initial components, but have a considerably superior dynamic range. Major cations and anions were analyzed to determine groundwater chemistry at a site used for the disposal of municipal sludge in the late 1960s and contaminated Portage Creek sedimem dredged in the late 1970s. The disposal site consists of five unlined basins constructed over 50 to 100 feet of stratified sand and gravel outwash underlain by silt and clay. Groundwater in the outwash is unconfined and flows from east to west. A groundwater divide in the center of the site produces local divergent flow to the northwest and southwest. This study assessed the validity of the matching law in an applied setting. It manipulated extraneous reinforcement and measured the rate of rocking in a 24-year-old developmentally disabled man. The resulting data were compared to that predicted by the matching law.

The results were important in three ways: (1) extraneous reinforcement systematically affected rocking in an applied setting in the manner predicted by the matching law, (2) a clinically undesirable behavior decreased in frequency, and (3) this decrease occurred in the absence of direct intervention on the target behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of adenosine and hypoxia on the proliferation of microvascular pericytes from bovine retina. This was accomplished through: (1) development of in vitro methods which allowed consistent isolation and propagation of homogeneous retinal pericyte cultures; (2) manipulation of oxygen partial pressure in the culture chamber; (3) culture of retinal pericytes in physiologically relevant concentrations of various vasoactive substances.Retinal pericytes were obtained, by homogenization and enzyme digestion, from aseptically isolated bovine retinal vessels.
