Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Andrya rauschi n. sp. from Microtus guentheri differs from all other species in testes number (22-40) and distribution. Andryar auschi is superficially similar to Paranoplocephala omphalodes but differs in the development of the uterus. Paranoplocephala nevoi n. sp. from Spalax ehrenbergi, is most similar to Paranoplocephala gundii,/i> and Paranoplocephalaja nickii but differs in the number of testes (26-44). Paranoplocephala nevoi differs from the remaining species in the distribution of testes and in having unilateral genital pores.

The Ethics Of International Bureaucracies: Abortion And The Human Reproduction Programme: An Interview With Australian Senator Brian Harradine Canberra, Australia, April, 1990, Brian Harradine

The Linacre Quarterly

The World Health Organization (WHO) is involved in many laudable activities, supported by thousands of loyal and active workers, both in the field and in educational, scientific, health, and medical establishments.

To many of these dedicated workers, it will be a source of much disappointment and shame, therefore, to learn that WHO has become involved in activities in which its motto "healthfor all" is being interpreted in such a way as to discriminate against the health and well-being of particular unborn children.

In this interview, Senator Harradine seeks to answer matters of serious concern which have arisen concerning the direction …

Review Of Human Pathogenic Bacteria In Marine Animals With Emphasis On Sharks, D. Jay Grimes Aug 1990

Review Of Human Pathogenic Bacteria In Marine Animals With Emphasis On Sharks, D. Jay Grimes

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Bacteria belonging to the genus Vibn'o were demonstrated as etiologic agents of disease in captive sharks, following their isolation from a dead sandbar shark, Carcharhinus plumbeus, and from experimentally infected lemon sharks, Negaprion brevirostris. Studies were expanded to healthy, freeranging sharks captured and sampled for bacteria at Bimini, Bahamas. The bacterial flora of 28 neritic sharks, comprising five species, were examined. All 28 sharks were colonized with bacteria, primarily the genus Vibrio. All tissues and organs sampled contained Vibrio spp.• including liver, spleen, kidney, eye, mouth, skin, pancreas, intestine, stomach, gall bladder, gill slits, and fetuses (from a pregnant sharpnose). …

Therapeutic Implications Of Ofloxacin In The Treatment Of Typhoid Fever Caused By Multiply Resistant Salmonella Typhi, M Ishaq, B J. Farooqui, M K. Ashfaq, M A. Khan Aug 1990

Therapeutic Implications Of Ofloxacin In The Treatment Of Typhoid Fever Caused By Multiply Resistant Salmonella Typhi, M Ishaq, B J. Farooqui, M K. Ashfaq, M A. Khan

Section of Cardiology

The antibiotic of choice for the treatment of typhoid fever in most parts of the world is still chloramphenicol. Ampicillin and cotrimoxazole have been used in recent years. Selection of antimicrobials for therapy has been complicated by the emergence of Salmonella typhi strains resistant to the above mentioned antibiotics. Blood and/or bone marrow cultures of 30 adult patients grew S. typhi that was resistant to chloramphenicol, ampicillin and cotrimoxazole. However, these strains were sensitive to cefotaxime, ceftrioxone, aztreonam and ofloxacin. Ofloxacin 400 mg twice a day was given orally to these patients for 14 days. All patients recovered with no …

Life History Differences Between Two Species Of Gregarina In Tenebrio Molitor Larva, Tim R. Ruhnke, John J. Janovy Jr. Aug 1990

Life History Differences Between Two Species Of Gregarina In Tenebrio Molitor Larva, Tim R. Ruhnke, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

The life histories of two species of Gregarina, protozoans parasitizing Tenebrio molitor, were compared. Gregarina cuneata occurred primarily in larger larvae, whereas Gregarina steini was distributed evenly throughout all sizes of larvae. As larval size increased, an increase in prevalence of G. cuneata preceded a more substantial increase in parasite relative density. Sample variance/relative density ratios of the two parasite species also differed. When host larvae were isolated in a sterile bran medium, the prevalence of G. cuneata decreased, whereas that of G. steini remained relatively high. Trophozoites of G. cuneata were found predominantly in a paired condition, …

Cysticerci (Cestoda: Taeniidae) From White-Tailed Deer, Odocoileus Virginianus, In Southern Florida [Research Notes], Donald J. Forrester, Robert L. Rausch Aug 1990

Cysticerci (Cestoda: Taeniidae) From White-Tailed Deer, Odocoileus Virginianus, In Southern Florida [Research Notes], Donald J. Forrester, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Metacestodes (cysticerci) of Taenia omissa Liihe, 1910, and Taenia hydatigena Pallas, 1776, were found in 9 and one of 124 white-tailed deer, respectively, in southern Florida in 1984-1986. Intensities of T. omissa varied from 1 to 15 (x[bar] = 4.6); only one cysticercus of T. hydatigena was collected. No significant difference in the prevalences of T. omissa according to sex, age, or locality was observed.

Effects Of An Academic Community Health Nursing Program On Self-Reported Functions And Competencies Of Entry Level Public Health Nurses, Charlotte Powell Aug 1990

Effects Of An Academic Community Health Nursing Program On Self-Reported Functions And Competencies Of Entry Level Public Health Nurses, Charlotte Powell

MSN Research Projects

This quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of an academic community health nursing program on functions and competencies of entry level public health nurses. The primary purpose of this study was to ascertain if additional knowledge regarding functions and competencies expected of public health nurses, acquired in an academic setting at the baccalaureate level, would improve self-reported functions and competencies of public health nurses. This study was based on King's (1981) conceptual model for continuing nursing education and her Theory of Goal Attainment. This model depicts the interrelatedness and importance of nurses continuing their nursing education which leads to effective goal …

Samuel B. Guze Oral History, Samuel B. Guze

Washington University Medical Center Desegregation History Project

An interview of the Washington University Medical Center Desegregation History Project, conducted by Edwin W. McCleskey and associates, 1990. Approximate Length: 49 minutes.

Samuel Guze discusses his experience with segregation and desegregation of Barnes Hospital, Renard Hospital, as well as its psychiatric service and unit. He guesses the psychiatric service desegregated the Barnes Hospital psychiatric unit in October 1953.

He describes the desegregation of Washington University School of Medicine. He says the Executive Faculty gave the admissions committee discretion in flexible criteria for admission for those with disadvantaged educational background. Roy Vagelos of biochemistry was a key player on the …
