Plasmodium Falciparum Appears To Have Arisen As A Result Of Lateral Transfer Between Avian And Human Hosts, A. P. Waters, D. G. Higgins, T. F. Mccutchan
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
It has been proposed that the acquisition of Plasmodium falciparum by man is a relatively recent event and that the sustained presence of this disease in man is unlikely to have been possible prior to the establishment of agriculture. To establish phylogenetic relationships among the Plasmodum species and to unravel the mystery of the orign of P. fakiparum, we have analyzed and compared phylogenetically the small-subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences of the species of malaria that infect humans as well as a number of those sequences from species that infect animals. Although this comparison confirmed the three established …

Health Locus Of Control And Spiritual Well-Being Of Participants In Narcotics Anonymous, Melinda Hamlin
Health Locus Of Control And Spiritual Well-Being Of Participants In Narcotics Anonymous, Melinda Hamlin
MSN Research Projects
The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to determine the relationship between health locus of control and spiritual well-being of participants in Narcotics Anonymous .
Erickson, Tomlin, and Swain's (1983) Modeling and Role- Modeling provided the conceptual framework. The sample was composed of 20 men and women who were participants in Narcotics Anonymous and 18 years and older. Data were collected by a gatekeeper to maintain anonymity. Three questionnaires were used: Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale, Spiritual Well-Being Scale, and a Demographic Data Sheet. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Pearson Product Moment Correlation procedure, and content …

Allogeneic Whole Pancreas Transplantation In Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, José Goldman, Heung K. Oh, Mark G. Webb, Martin Mozes, Nancy Turza, Warren L. Kupin, K. K. Venkat, Ramón Del Busto
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A clinical whole organ pancreas transplantation program for patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus complicated by end-stage renal disease was initiated at Henry Ford Hospital in 1987. Five patients have received pancreatic allografts after a previous kidney transplant (phase 1), and six patients had simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants (phase 2). Ten patients had functioning pancreatic grafts after surgery, and all of them had normal carbohydrate tolerance with appropriate plasma free insulin responses to an oral glucose tolerance test three months after transplantation. As long as 28 months postsurgery six patients remained free of insulin requirements; however, one patient rejected the pancreatic allograft, …

Since 1986, 364 tuco-tucos (Ctenomys spp.) representing 7 species were collected from 16 major collecting areas representing at least 4 distinct ecological habitats in Bolivia, South America. All were examined for coccidia, and 125 (34%) had oocysts in their feces including 84 of 236 (36%) Ctenomys boliviensis from tropical palm/savanna habitats; 1 of 3 (33%) C. conoveri from a chaco thorn forest; 3 of 7 (33%) C. frater from medium altitude grass habitats; and 6 of 8 (75%) C. lewisi and 31 of 35 (88%) C. opimus from high altitude/puna habitats. None of 3 C. …

Cytokeratin And Desmoplakin Analogues Within An Intracellular Parasite, Earl Weidner, Robin M. Overstreet, Bruce Tedeschi, John Fuseler
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
A significant amount of the total protein in the spore sacs of the microsporidian Thelohania sp. consisted of the cytoskeletal elements, cytokeratin intermediate filaments, and the desmosomal analogues. The cytokeratin and desmosomal analogues were organized as cage envelopes surrounding the spores within the spore sac stage. Thelohania sp. parasitizes the skeletal muscle of Callinectes sapidus, a crustacean that does not appear to have cytokeratins or desmosomes. Immunoprobe data indicate Thelohania sp. has a 240 kDa desmoplakin protein and 48, 51, 54 and 56 kDa cytokeratin polypeptides responsive to antibodies developed against bovine cytoskeletal counterparts. The cytoskeletal envelopes within the …

Comparison Of Motor Unit Action Potential Recorded From Disposable And Reusable Monopolar Eeg Needle Electrodes, Helen Sheau-Ping Pan, Jennifer Chu, Rai-Chi Chan, Tao-Chang Hsu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The usage of disposable needle electrodes is a safe way to prevent severe infectious diseases, especially AIDS, in EMG laboratories. The purposes of this study were (1) to compare disposable with reusable monopolar needle electrodes physiologically by recording motor unit action potentials (MUAPs), and (2) to determine the stability of the disposable monopolar needle electrodes (DMNE).Computer-aided measurements were used to compare 60 MUAPs recorded with reusable monopo;ar needle electrodes (RMNE) and 60 MUAPs recorded from the same muscle (Tibialis anterior) with DMNE at the first (new), second (used). and sith(old) electrode usage. There wase no significant difference among the amplitude, …

Vcu Voice (1990-11-16)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Aids: Implications To Society And Approaches To Control, Robert W. Sidwell
Aids: Implications To Society And Approaches To Control, Robert W. Sidwell
Faculty Honor Lectures
It is perhaps a measure of today's society that a new disease of potentially world-wide implication does not gain national or international attention until a famous person contracts it. This was particularly seen with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) when it became known that Rock Hudson of movie and TV acclaim was dying of it. By the time the celebrated pianist and entertainer Liberace died of AIDS, the various public health agencies around the world had begun to focus on the problem, and enormous sums of money were being committed toward its control. Today, more U.s. dollars are budgeted for AIDS …
