Planning Departmental Structure: Disciplinary Integrity Versus Pragmatic Opportunism, Lloyd Crisp, David Seibert Jan 1990

Planning Departmental Structure: Disciplinary Integrity Versus Pragmatic Opportunism, Lloyd Crisp, David Seibert

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article interrogates whether speech communication departments should pursue disciplinary coherence or embrace pragmatic opportunism while adapting to shifting institutional environments. Through case study analysis of structural evolution at a land grant university and a suburban research campus, it traces how size, articulation mandates, physical facilities, campus politics, curricular demand, public image, and faculty composition interact to shape organizational structure, program identity, governance, and resource allocation. A systems theory perspective yields ten planning criteria, showing that alignment with local contingencies rather than idealized disciplinary purity sustains enrollment stability, instructional quality, and faculty legitimacy. By framing communication studies as a socially …

Jewish-Christian Dialogue: A Jewish Justification, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 1990

Jewish-Christian Dialogue: A Jewish Justification, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

JEWISH-CHRISTIAN DIALOGUE: A JEWISH JUSTIFICATION. By David Novak. New York: Oxford University Press, 1989. Pp. xiii, 194. $24.95. ISBN: 0-19-505084-3.

David Novak's "philosophically formulated theological argument for Jewish-Christian dialogue" (p. ix) seeks a "common border" between the two monotheisms which constitute the main story line of Western religion. And he finds it, in that old American standard, the Judeo-Christian ethic. I recommend Novak's rigorously argued, learned, and insightful book to readers of all faiths, and to those of no faith at all. I propose to support that recommendation by describing precisely its important and truly singular aspiration.

The Enduring Revolution: Law And Theology In The Secular State, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 1990

The Enduring Revolution: Law And Theology In The Secular State, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

At least since the millennium, the observation that religion is pivotal in a rightly-ordered polity has been the most resilient insight in Western thought. By "pivotal," I mean that political theorizing has invariably located religion's ontological status and social dimensions at its core. So long as all political theorists were confessing Christians in profoundly Christian societies, this was inevitable. But the "pivot" was not altered by any "separation" of church and state. Instead, the pivot engendered this separation. The uniquely Western notion of two jurisdictions, including an autonomous temporal order of civil regulation, was produced entirely by Christian theological reflection. …

An Approach To Seventh-Day Adventist Radio Evangelism In Ghana, Ebenezer Obodai Sackey Jan 1990

An Approach To Seventh-Day Adventist Radio Evangelism In Ghana, Ebenezer Obodai Sackey

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Since Ghana gained independence from colonial rule, religious broadcasting has undergone self- and governmental censorship. Post-independence governments have either clamped down on the activities of church organizations by disagreeing with them or have intimidated them in numerous ways to tone down some aspects of their activities that the government considers unacceptable. In recent times, both individual Ghanaians and government functionaries, especially, have looked at the Christian church with suspicion and skepticism. Many of them consider the Christian message, at least in the way it is presented, out of touch with, and irrelevant to the everyday needs and realities of the …

Understanding Cross-Cultural Differences In The Context Of Tourism, Ady Milman Jan 1990

Understanding Cross-Cultural Differences In The Context Of Tourism, Ady Milman

Visions in Leisure and Business

One of the primary problems in better understanding through the tourism experience is perceptual differences between the tourist and the host country. These differences are influenced by the environment, organization, and individual. It is in the manipulation of these constructs that relationships and better understanding can be achieved.

A Mormon Melting Pot: Ethnicity Acculturation In Cedar City, Utah, 1880-1915, Vida Leigh

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studies the ethnicity of the five ethnic groups found in Cedar City, Utah, during the 1880-to-1915 period. Those five groups were originally sent by Brigham Young to found the Iron Mission, as a two-fold project: (1) developing the iron mining industry, and (2) building a united community of Latter-day Saints.

The demographics, kinship, ties, marriage patterns, occupations, wealth, and elites in church government and society have been examined in detail through US censuses, Iron county assessment records, marriage records, Cedar City municipal records, LDS church records, diaries, histories, and personal histories. By comparing all the ethnic groups within …
