Youth Service: From Youth As Problems To Youth As Resources, Bonnie Benard Jan 1990

Youth Service: From Youth As Problems To Youth As Resources, Bonnie Benard

School K-12

New Paradigm "Youth as problems, or youth as resources? Communities with problems or communities with resources?" These opening sentences to Reaching Out. a recent book on establishing community service programs for youth, encapsulate a critical issue I see confronting anyone relating to or working with young people, whether as parents, teachers, community folk, or prevention advocates and other helping professionals: the framework or perspective from which we view youth in our society today. Whether we view youth as problems or as resources determines not only our expectations for our youth and our actions towards them, but also the type of …

International Obligation And The Theory Of Hypothetical Consent, Fernando R. Tesón Jan 1990

International Obligation And The Theory Of Hypothetical Consent, Fernando R. Tesón

Scholarly Publications

In this article I make three related arguments. First, I argue that the traditional approach to the problem of international obligation is incomplete and much too simplistic. Drawing in part on the ideas of Ronald Dworkin, I suggest that rather than a question of fidelity to international law, the foundational problem is the determination of international law. Second, I consider and reject two theories of international obligation: the theory based on the concept of interdependence and the theory of actual consent of states. Third, I suggest a theory of international obligation based on human rights. This theory is drawn from …

The Development Of Hope And Hopelessness: Structural And Functional Aspects, Anthony Scioli Jan 1990

The Development Of Hope And Hopelessness: Structural And Functional Aspects, Anthony Scioli

Open Access Dissertations

Hopelessness was explored from a developmental perspective. The investigation focused primarily on the relative importance of structural vs. functional variables in determining levels of hopelessness in children and adolescents. The two secondary aims of this study were to further clarify the concept of hopelessness, and to assess the construct validity of the Hopelessness Scale for Children (HSC: Kazdin et al., 1983).

Sixty-four children and adolescents scoring either "high" or "low" on the HSC were interviewed. Thirty-two of the subjects were children, 6-10 years of age. One half of these subjects were clinically involved. The adolescent sample also consisted of thirty-two …

Gender Preferences: The New Generation, Denise Kimberly Steele-Harl

Theses

Men and women between the ages of 18 and 29 were the subjects of a study designed to explore their gender preferences for their children , to examine the stated reasons for the preferences, and to consider the implications of these attitudes for the subjects and society as a whole . Four-hundred and forty- three respondents completed a one- page questionnaire addressing these issues and requesting data regarding sex, age , and marital status . The results were then compared to those of previous studies focusing on the issue of gender preference from the 1950s and 1970s. The new generation …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Retelling With The Aid Of A Story-Map Procedure With Weaker Readers, Madeleine Boekeman Jan 1990

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Retelling With The Aid Of A Story-Map Procedure With Weaker Readers, Madeleine Boekeman

Theses : Honours

This study examines the effectiveness of the 'Retelling with the aid of a story-map procedure' as an instructional approach which could help weaker readers in their second year of schooling. Based on the literature and research findings which support a view of language as a developmental, holistic and natural process, the 'Retelling with the aid of a story-map procedure' was chosen. It was hypothesised that it would help the weaker readers make connections between oral language and written language, develop meaning seeking behaviours and increase their 'data pool' of linguistic knowledge. The goal of this study was to seek answers …

Lutheran Theology And Liturgical Acculturation, Karen M. Ward

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

The Lutheran churches in the United States have historically reflected Teutonic and Scandinavian culture and heritage. This was a natural phenomenon due to the fact that the earliest Lutheran settlers in this country were of Teutonic and Scandinavian background.

Metamodeling Aspects Of Model Conceptualization, Wayne W. Wakeland Jan 1990

Metamodeling Aspects Of Model Conceptualization, Wayne W. Wakeland

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper suggests a technique for improving the conceptualization of models. The key aspect of this technique is to set aside the main model for a period of time during the model conceptualization process and focus on building a "watchdog" submodel. The primary purpose of the watchdog submodel is to assure that the main model remains internally consistent during its operation. In the experience of this author, such a submodel can help to identify model conceptualization errors and to determine if a model is sufficiently "robust" to adequately replicate the behavior of the system being modeled.

This is not a …
