A Study Of The Principle Of Poetic Justice In The Tragedies Of The Age Of Elizabeth Exclusive Of Shakespeare, Alberta Amalia Reibenstein Jan 1930

A Study Of The Principle Of Poetic Justice In The Tragedies Of The Age Of Elizabeth Exclusive Of Shakespeare, Alberta Amalia Reibenstein

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A complete study of the principle would take into consideration other literary types besides the drama, but since, historically, the drama takes precedence over those other types, and since the first important controversy on the subject arose in England in connection with tragedy, I have considered it best to limit the material undertaken here to that form of dramatic art. Further than that, the study will be limited to some of the leading tragedies of the Elizabethian age, excluding those of Shakespeare, for it was the use or misuse of poetic justice in these plays which formed the basis of …

The Creative Writing Of Poetry In The California Secondary Schools, Wesley Mills Pugh Jan 1930

The Creative Writing Of Poetry In The California Secondary Schools, Wesley Mills Pugh

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Creation was once a prerogative of the gods. For ages the magic word "genius" served as a harrier to isolate from the common man that one in whom burned the spark of constructive originality. In the past we have never considered the possibility of his being one of the teeming throng who Invade our classrooms daily; or having given way to such an absurdity, we have hastily dismissed the Idea, feeling that, if he were, his presence would surely be announced by the choir invisible or some other divine agency.

Of recent years we have experienced a change of opinion. …

The Place Of The Fine Arts In A Democratic Education, Ivine Shields Jan 1930

The Place Of The Fine Arts In A Democratic Education, Ivine Shields

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary functions of our democratic education should be to awaken conscious relationships to out advancing ideals of beauty and to foster an appreciation for the fine arts, which will not only keep life from becoming sordid and existence sensuous, but will prove the sustenance of youth and the delight of old age.

With these ideas in mind, it is the writer’s desire to plead for more and better teaching of the fine arts in our schools, and to urge government aid and support manifested in the establishment of free schools of fine arts throughout the nation.

Truancy As A Factor In The Delinquency Of Boys : A Case-Study Of 300 Boys In The Preston School Of Industry At Ione, California, And Comparisons With The Truancy Problem Of The Sacramento City Schools, V. Pierpont Husband Jan 1930

Truancy As A Factor In The Delinquency Of Boys : A Case-Study Of 300 Boys In The Preston School Of Industry At Ione, California, And Comparisons With The Truancy Problem Of The Sacramento City Schools, V. Pierpont Husband

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The study of a question such as that of Truancy must be undertaken on the basis of statistics. It is essentially a matter of investigating and gathering data upon individual cases.

The preliminary search for material upon the subject revealed the fact that practically nothing had been written upon it and apparently little inquiry made into the problem. Accordingly, the writer obtained permission from Superintendent O.H. Close of the Preston School of Industry located at Ione, Amador County, California to conduct an investigation of this problem among the delinquent boys committed to that institution. This school is the state correctional …

A Study Of The Tragic Elements In Shakespeare's Comedies, Dorothy Corson Jan 1930

A Study Of The Tragic Elements In Shakespeare's Comedies, Dorothy Corson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In a study of the tragic elements in Shakespeare's comedies, it is necessary to distinguish between the tragic and the comic and to note their relationship, before considering the subject proper.

An Investigation Into Theories Of Metempsychosis, Charles H. Gunsolus Jan 1930

An Investigation Into Theories Of Metempsychosis, Charles H. Gunsolus

Graduate Thesis Collection

The ancient Egyptians believed in the immortality of the Soul and in Rebirth.  The Egyptian embalming of the dead originated in their belief in a life beyond the grave.  Polytheism and Ancestor worship prevailed in the earlier ages and as far back as history can trace it.

The Metrics And Imagery Of Edwin Arlington Robinson As Exhibited In Five Of His Blank Verse Poems, Elsie Ruth Dykes-Chant Jan 1930

The Metrics And Imagery Of Edwin Arlington Robinson As Exhibited In Five Of His Blank Verse Poems, Elsie Ruth Dykes-Chant

English Language and Literature ETDs

Almost all of Edwin Arlington Robinson's poetry is divided metrically, into three types: blank verse, sonnets, and quatrains. The metrical analysis that follows is based on his blank verse. The real intent is to compare the earlier blank verses with the later, to analyze the relation between subject matter and form, and to note in general, the sources from which he gleaned his figures of speech. The following analysis is based on a study of some 13,000 lines of his blank verse.

Social Aspects Of Secondary Education, Fannie Holmon Washington Jan 1930

Social Aspects Of Secondary Education, Fannie Holmon Washington

All Theses

The following pages embody an endeavor to show specifically the Social Aspects of Secondary education. There i3 no part of the American public 3ch©ol system that has been subjected to such critical scrutiny during the past quarter of century, as the secondary school. Especially during the past ten years has the questioning of existing secondary arrangements been particularly searching. Many new proposals for curriculum reorganization to meet the needs of new social objectives have been advanced by critical workers in this field of education. The writer of this paper has tried to present a subject well discussed, on the high …

New Mexico Spanish Folk-Tales, Arthur L. Campa Jan 1930

New Mexico Spanish Folk-Tales, Arthur L. Campa

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The folk-tale is one of the most fascinating forms of folk-lore that can be studied. When a good story is told in the family circle (in many cases the entire village is one large family) or in a gathering of friends, the question: "Where did you read that?" never arises. Neither do the hearers make a written record of the tale they have just listened to. It is an accepted custom that all "cuentos" are committed to memory.

A Study Of The Electrolytic Determination Of Lead, Philip Hall Delano Jan 1930

A Study Of The Electrolytic Determination Of Lead, Philip Hall Delano

Masters Theses

"The electrolytic determination of lead is one of the most used methods, particularly for control work and where large numbers of analyses have to be run each day. The method is adopted because of its simplicity and because of the small amount of the chemist's time required. It is particularly suited for the determination of small amounts of lead. However, it has been noted that deviations from certain conditions produce results which vary widely from the actual amount of lead present, though results which check with each other may be obtained. Certain elements interfere with the determination and must be …

The Solubilities Of Alkali Chlorides And Sulfates In Anhydrous Alcohols, Emmet Rudolph Kirn Jan 1930

The Solubilities Of Alkali Chlorides And Sulfates In Anhydrous Alcohols, Emmet Rudolph Kirn

Masters Theses

"A search of the literature for data on the solubilities of inorganic salts in various anhydrous alcohols will show that comparatively little work has been recorded. Most of the work has been done on salts in aqueous normal alcohols and practically all of this data concerns only methyl and ethyl alcohols. This information shows a wide divergence in results with different workers. Perhaps these differences in data may be attributed to an error in that the alcohols may not have been absolutely anhydrous, for even small traces of water greatly affect the solubility of the salts. Again, the methods of …

Salts In Tri-State Mill Waters: Their Ill-Effect On The Flotation Of Zinc And Their Removal, Warren Lincoln Howes Jan 1930

Salts In Tri-State Mill Waters: Their Ill-Effect On The Flotation Of Zinc And Their Removal, Warren Lincoln Howes

Masters Theses

"The application of the flotation process has become one of the greatest innovations in modern ore dressing. In a comparatively short span of years it has grown to be one of the most powerful tools of the ore dressing engineer. Flotation is particularly adapted for the recovery of finely ground mineral and has thus enabled the miner to open up enormous deposits of low grade, disseminated ores for profitable treatment. In conjunction with other methods, the process has raised the recovery in practically every ore dressing plant by the treatment of slimes which otherwise would go to waste, carrying valuable …

A Power Study Of A Laboratory Ball Mill, Frederick Clearman Jan 1930

A Power Study Of A Laboratory Ball Mill, Frederick Clearman

Masters Theses

"Ball milling practice in the ore dressing industry is largely empirical. Although many investigators have worked on various of its phases, the present operating methods are mostly a matter of cut-and-try, with the result that the industry is not guided by its underlying principles. Consequently, practice varies extensively with regard to nearly all conditions of operations. Even in neighboring concentrators such factors as speed, ball charge, and ore load differ in similar ball mills. Since fine grinding is continually becoming of more importance, and often accounts for thirty per cent of the milling cost, it is very necessary that a …
