The Platonic Lover Of Elizabethan Poetry., Dorcas Douglass Ray Jan 1930

The Platonic Lover Of Elizabethan Poetry., Dorcas Douglass Ray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Just what is the meaning of Platonic love? It is a term that has caught the attention of scholars, poets, and plain men, in many countries and during many centuries. Perhaps its wide appeal accounts for the varied and tortuous shapes its meaning has assumed as it has passed through the inquisitive and often callous fingers of the multitudes. It is a term applied popularly today to a kind of abstract, passionless friendship, which, to the practical-minded American, can exist only in theory. Few who use the term Platonic love or Platonic friendship have paused first to read the pages …

Technique Of Instruction And Comparative Results For Classes Of One Hundred In Mathematics, Clifford E. Trueblood Jan 1930

Technique Of Instruction And Comparative Results For Classes Of One Hundred In Mathematics, Clifford E. Trueblood

Graduate Thesis Collection

The purpose in this thesis is to present the technique established in teaching classes of one hundred (80-120) in mathematics and to compare the student progress with the progress made by those in small classes of the entire department. In this study the pupils have not been assigned, either to the large class (100) or the small classes (35), in any special way. In every instance, the assignment to classes has been to suit the pupil's program or the programs of the school. In other words, there has been no attempt to assign special pupils to special classes for the …

Romantic Comedies Of Robert Greene And William Shakespeare, Ella Tucker Jan 1930

Romantic Comedies Of Robert Greene And William Shakespeare, Ella Tucker

Graduate Thesis Collection

The character of the work of a poet depends, in a measure, upon the state of the art upon which he enters and upon the character of his century and his nation. During the half-century, beginning about 1580, England witnessed the rise, culmination, and gradual decline of Romantic Comedy. "The foundations of modern society had been laid."

Collected Opinions As To Treatment Of Individual Differences Among Adolescents, J. Helen Bright Roligan Jan 1930

Collected Opinions As To Treatment Of Individual Differences Among Adolescents, J. Helen Bright Roligan

All Theses

In my study of Adolescent Psychology, I have learned that all individuals are not alike in any trait. Through observation, I have noticed these differences to be outstanding ones. Very often I hear someone say, "Oh I don't see why she likes this or, why she does that" then they answer their own question by saying, "Y/ell I guess that's due to individual differences," because I would not have that if it was on a Christmas tree." If someone would spend a day on the campus or in the classroom, of any school, they would recognize at once that there …

A Survey Of Progressive Education And Its Application To Certain Schools Of California, William Wells Pratchner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A new idea of education is upon us and if we are to achieve a civilization based upon justice and cooperation, realization of a greater personal freedom and the accomplishment of a fuller democracy, education must pave the way.

Before this goal can be fully realized, fundamental changes and adjustments must be accomplished in our social and industrial life. A new education will be one of the most potent factors in the reshaping of our national character. This education must be one that will truly equip men and women with knowledge, inspiration, and power necessary to build new institutions, and …

Iron And Cobalt Salts As Catalysts In The Oxidation Of Sodium Sulfite By Free Oxygen, Loren C. Bryner Jan 1930

Iron And Cobalt Salts As Catalysts In The Oxidation Of Sodium Sulfite By Free Oxygen, Loren C. Bryner

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation was carried out to show the catalytic effect of some iron and cobalt salts on the oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions by free oxygen. The rate of reaction was determined by measuring the volume of water required to replace the absorbed oxygen. A photograph and diagrammatical arrangement of the apparatus is given, (Page 14). From the preliminary experiments it was found that the rate of oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions is dependent upon concentration, and speed of the shaker.

The Autobiographical Elements In Francis Thompson's Hound Of Heaven And St. Augustine's Confessions, Agnes Blanchard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I have undertaken to compare the autobiographies of men whose lives were unlike in many respects but alike in this, that though they sought definitely to flee away from God, the heart hunger in their beings allowed them to rest until they returned to His loving embrace. In Francis Thompson's Hound of Heaven and in St. Augustine's Confessions, I shall attempt to find two men who found God after treading devious paths away from Him

History Of Applied Geometry, Evelyn Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mathematics: Just what does the word mean to us? After a moment of thought many different meanings may present themselves to our minds. At first we are inclined to say that the word mathematics covers a vast field. We are justified in so thinking because mathematics embraces a wide scope of study. Were we to say that it is a science we should place it in its proper genius, for it is truly a science of numbers and space. However, could not the science be the art of calculation or the art of computation?

The History of Literature is replete with the autobiographies of men and women, who for some reason or other have thought it worth their while to give the written record of their lives to the world. As one glances through the pages of these histories of lives, one marvels at the multiplicity of ambitions that have inspired their authors.

A Measurement Of The Extent Of The Color-Sensitive Areas Of The Retina And Of The Wavelengths Of Light Stimulating The Respective Receptor Mechanisms, Charles A. Rinde Jan 1930

A Measurement Of The Extent Of The Color-Sensitive Areas Of The Retina And Of The Wavelengths Of Light Stimulating The Respective Receptor Mechanisms, Charles A. Rinde

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The interest of the writer was directed toward the phenomena of color vision in 1927 as a result of attending concurrently two courses in the University of California touching upon the subject, but treating it quite differently with results far from mutually consistent. Prof. R. S. Minor, in his course on physical optics, discussed color vision from the physicist’s standpoint, making use of the Young-Helmholtz theory; while Prof. G. M. Stratton gave the psychological treatment, based upon the Ladd-Franklin theory, as a part of his general psychology. Several of the more obviously points of conflict impressed the writer so strongly …

New Mexico Schools From 1581 To 1846, Rufus Atwood Palm Jr.

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this thesis, accordingly, is to collect and arrange the most authentic information available, from secondary sources, on the schools of New Mexico during the Spanish and the Mexican administration, 1581 to 1821 and 1821 to 1846 respectively.

Particular effort will be made to trace the establishment and the progress of the schools during these periods and to determine the methods of maintenance, as well as the nature of the schools. Also, an attempt will be made to determine to what extent education in New Mexico was of a religious nature and linked with the history of the …

The Fate Of Water Lost From The Blood In Cocaine Fever And The Relation Of This Water To The Febrile Process., Hubert T. Marshall Jan 1930

The Fate Of Water Lost From The Blood In Cocaine Fever And The Relation Of This Water To The Febrile Process., Hubert T. Marshall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was carried out in an attempt to determine the nature of some of the physiological changes, particularly the shift in the water balance during the rise in temperature following pyretic doses of cocaine. It is well known that cocaine in sufficiently large doses produces an almost immediate and rapid rise in body temperature associated with increased metabolism and motor activity. Reichert (1). The increased motor activity becomes evident soon after the injection of the cocaine. Extreme restlessness, muscle twitching and tremor progressing into clonic convulsions may be observed. Barbour and Moise (2) have shown in dogs given pyretic …
