Revision Of The Jefferson City Formation In The Rolla Quadrangle, James Shelley Cullison Jan 1930

Revision Of The Jefferson City Formation In The Rolla Quadrangle, James Shelley Cullison

Masters Theses

"The geology of the Rolla quadrangle was mapped by Lee in 1912. At that time all the dolomitic strata above the Roubidoux and beneath the Carboniferous formations in this area were placed in the Jefferson City. A more detailed study of the stratigraphy of the whole Ozark region by Ulrich has shown that some of the strata which had been included in the Jefferson City formation on lithologic grounds are not equivalent to the dolomites in the type section at Jefferson City, Missouri"--Introduction, page [1].

The Social And Political Philosophy Of Shelley As Revealed In His Poetry, Eulalie Imogene Powell Jan 1930

The Social And Political Philosophy Of Shelley As Revealed In His Poetry, Eulalie Imogene Powell

Masters Theses

"The interest in a study of the philosophy of Shelley does not lie in the hope of discovering anything new, since there is little in anyone's belief that is without historic parallel. Rather, the sources of such an interest are first, the medium of poetry through which Shelley expressed his belief, and secondly, the transference of these beliefs into the acts of his life. It is to a consideration of the first of these that this paper is limited. Biographical facts will be used only for the elucidation of the theories expressed in his poems. Briefly, the purpose of this …

Changing Conceptions Of Sacred Music, Marion Virginia Rice Jan 1930

Changing Conceptions Of Sacred Music, Marion Virginia Rice

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

From the Very beginning of time, music has had an unusual emotional power, and probably because of this reason, it has always been connected with religion. According to one author, sacred music may be divided historically, as follows: (1) Jewish Music, (2) Music of the Primitive Church, (3) Medieval Church Music, (4) Post-Reformation Music, and (5) Modern Church. Each of these divisions may be subdivided; and, in considering the various types which may be found in each, one may see how the conception of sacred music has changed in accordance with the changing views concerning religion.

The study which this …

An Introductory Course In The Reading Of Simple Graphic And Statistical Material For Use In Junior High Schools, Annie Mckenzie

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the stories of olden times and in those of our own American Indians, we learned of the picture writing of primitive peoples. It became an early method of recording people's thoughts. This was a very useful method at a time when the race was young. This in turn was the beginning of our alphabet, later the beginning of shaping letters into words, and then word into sentences and paragraphs. As our world has grown older, new idea have come into use and we are no longer content to live as our grandparents lived. We travel by fast express trains, …

Certain Aspects Of Pioneer Life As Presented In The Modern Novel, Elta Louise Livoni Jan 1930

Certain Aspects Of Pioneer Life As Presented In The Modern Novel, Elta Louise Livoni

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The term pioneer simply means one who pushes ahead to remove obstacles and to prepare the way for others who are to follow. Nevertheless, when we speak of the pioneers in American history, we are really speaking of three different types of men who have only a little in common.

All pioneers leave behind them settled communities and highly civilized life and push out into an unknown and. unsettled country;y. Also, all pioneers are seekers, but they do not all seek the same things, Some are seeking adventure. These are the explorers, the pioneers seized with the wanderlust, those who …

A Syllabus Of Line Geometry, Alice Willmarth Jan 1930

A Syllabus Of Line Geometry, Alice Willmarth

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the study of advanced geometry, we shall deal with a certain important relation between pairs of figures in space, and also between their properties. There are two distinct parts to analytic geometry, the analytic work and the geometric interpretation. Two systems of geometry, depending upon different elements with the same number of coordinates, will have the same analytic expressions and will differ only in the interpretation of the analysis. In such a case it is often sufficient to know the meaning of the coordination and the interpretation of a few fundamental relations in each system in order to find …

The Personification Of Abstract Virtues As Represented In Four Roman Goddesses : Concordia, Fides, Pietas, And Spes, Dorothea Quitzow Jan 1930

The Personification Of Abstract Virtues As Represented In Four Roman Goddesses : Concordia, Fides, Pietas, And Spes, Dorothea Quitzow

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Roman literature and history clearly show that the Romans in the days of the Emperors constantly deified many of the abstract terms which to us designate qualities of character, or ideals worthy of emulation in life. Among the more significant of these are such ideas as faith, honor, intellect, concord, fidelity, hope, chastity, and understanding.

It is the purpose of this thesis to discuss the development of some of these virtues as they were represented through the mythological deification with which the Romans invested them. The goddesses, Concordia, Fides, Pietas, and Spes are herein presented as illustrating this popular and …

The Straits And Constantinople, 1914-1923, George Harmon Knoles Jan 1930

The Straits And Constantinople, 1914-1923, George Harmon Knoles

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

From 330 to 1453 A.D., Constantinople became first the strategic position on the land route from the west to the east and then the important trading center of the eastern Empire. During this period the Italian cities had to cope with the "Question of the Straits" among themselves. For them, it was merely a commercial question. For the Greeks it was an important question since the city needed to be defended against the onslaught of the Moslems by means of the city's strong walls and by the active fleet in the Straits.

The conquest of the Straits by the Turks, …

The Effect Of The Economic Development Of Mexico Upon Her Treaties With The United States, Peter Walline Knoles Jan 1930

The Effect Of The Economic Development Of Mexico Upon Her Treaties With The United States, Peter Walline Knoles

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A brief glimpse into the diplomatic correspondence to preponderance of intercourse due to the economic development of Mexico and the United States. It was at first hoped that the scope of this thesis could cover the definite effect of the economic development upon the diplomatic relations. Unfortunately that task would cover such a wide field as to admit of no intensive study of any particular phase. The diplomatic correspondence of the last twenty years covers an enormous field, due largely to the unsettled conditions existing in Mexico subsequent to the fall of Porfirio Diaz

A History Of The Proposed Nicaragua Canal, Gordon Elbert Knoles Jan 1930

A History Of The Proposed Nicaragua Canal, Gordon Elbert Knoles

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The subject of a maritime communication with the people and countries of the far east during the fifteenth century engaged the earnest and thoughtful attention of many men in the European states bordering on the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. There remained a firm belief and honest expectation that somewhere there existed a more direct route to those far distant land, following which would result in greatly increasing the interchange of productions, which had, for many centuries, contributed much to the wealth of Western Nations, disregarding the disadvantages, and near- ly unsurmountable difficulties under which such commercial intercourse had been …

Laboratory Concentration Of The Missouri Iron Ores Of Iron Mountain And Pilot Knob, Strathmore Ridley Barnott Cooke Jan 1930

Laboratory Concentration Of The Missouri Iron Ores Of Iron Mountain And Pilot Knob, Strathmore Ridley Barnott Cooke

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain whether the more important iron ores of Missouri would be amenable to beneficiation to produce high grade concentrates. In the southeastern section of Missouri are found many small deposits of high grade iron ores, and a few large deposits of comparatively low grade ore. The former consist chiefly of red and brown hematite and limonite ores that are in no need of beneficiation. the low grade iron orebodies are relatively large in extent, and, if they could be beneficiated successully [sic] and economically would be of value. Accordingly, the major portion of …

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Missouri Vegetables And Soils, Charles Jackson Potter Jan 1930

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Missouri Vegetables And Soils, Charles Jackson Potter

Masters Theses

"Investigations have shown that the iodine content of vegetables, water, and soils has a direct relationship to the goiter incidence of a given region. A few countries, notably New Zealand and Switzerland have made a rather complete survey. In the United States, South Carolina has made the most progress in this direction.

At the present time there are no available records of vegetable and soil analysis for iodine in Missouri. Hunze determined the amount of iodine in waters in Missouri. The connection of his results with the author's results will be seen later.

The present investigation was carried out at …

The Effect Of Various Methods Of Grinding On The Physical Properties Of Unfired Dry Press Brick, Edwin Theodore Harvey Jan 1930

The Effect Of Various Methods Of Grinding On The Physical Properties Of Unfired Dry Press Brick, Edwin Theodore Harvey

Bachelors Theses

"In the manufacture of dry press brick, the final grinding of the clay is usually done in a dry pan. This is especially true of fire brick made by the dry press method. It is logical to assume that different types of grinding machines will impart different characteristics to the ground clay mix, as regards the grain size variation and the shape of the grains, which in turn will have an effect on the properties of the brick. The purpose of this investigation was to determine what effect different types of grinding methods have on the physical properties of unfired …

The Transmission Of Pressure In The Dry Pressing Of Typical Building Brick And Fire Brick Mixes As Affected By The Degree Of Pressure, Physical Character Of Mix Ingredient, And The Moisture Content Of The Mix, Ferdinand Frederick Netzeband

Bachelors Theses

"In February, 1929, the Dry Press Committee of the National Brick Manufacturers Association, in cooperation with the department of Ceramics of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, began several investigations relating to dry press ware. This Committee suggested a great number of possible investigations, and are now systematically proceeding along these lines. This investigation has for its object: (1) The transmission of pressure in the dry pressing of typical building brick and fire brick mixes as affected by the degree of pressure; and (2) As affected by the moisture content of the mix. this thesis contains a description of …

A Fire Clay Cement Study, Willard E. Davis Jan 1930

A Fire Clay Cement Study, Willard E. Davis

Bachelors Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to develop a satisfactory boiler setting cement from a semi-flint fire clay. This clay is now being mined and used to make refractory ware by the Wellsville Fire Brick Company, Wellsville, Missouri. It has been my intention of using only those materials which have been used by this company and following the same preparation of the clay, that is, using the machinery which is at present available in the plant"--Introduction, page 3.

Disintegration Of Ozark Plastic Fire Clay In The Drier, Elmer Francis Cirkal Jan 1930

Disintegration Of Ozark Plastic Fire Clay In The Drier, Elmer Francis Cirkal

Bachelors Theses

"During the procedure of testing Ozark Plastic Fire clay in 1928-29 a few of the test bars were unintentionally left in a laboratory drier and after some months it was found that these bars were decidedly disintegrated into a powder without any known special treatment...In order to properly investigate the cause of this phenomena it was decided to repeat the experiment under similar conditions so that no error could enter the investigation which would cause any deviation from the results previously obtained "--pages 1 -2.

The Determination Of The Alumina Content In Diaspore And High Alumina Clays, W. D. Keller Jan 1930

The Determination Of The Alumina Content In Diaspore And High Alumina Clays, W. D. Keller

Bachelors Theses

"The determination of the alumina in diaspore and kindred high alumina clays has been a problem which has attracted the interest of ceramists and chemists ever since a sample of Missouri diaspore was first sent for analysis to the laboratories of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1917...It is the writer's intention to review in this paper the various published methods for the determination of alumina in high alumina clays and to present a new indirect one that after some months' use in industrial practice, fulfills, in some measure at least, the need outlined above"--Introduction, page 1 -2.

Faraday's Laws Of Electrolysis, M. Aquinas Dec 1929

Faraday's Laws Of Electrolysis, M. Aquinas

Bachelors’ Theses

Physics has no equal, perhaps, in bringing the student to an appreciation of the beauty, the order and the harmony or the universe, and thus drawing the heart and the mind to God whose unbounded powers executed the eternal and marvelous wonders that are all about us.

It is intensely fascinating to take peeps into the "laboratories of God" and wonder what will be the next secret that He will let man in on. It seems as the ages roll by He gradually allows us to share more and more in His secrets or nature; He appears to be slowly …

Analysis Of The Causes Of Bank Failures In New Mexico, 1920 To 1925, Tom L. Popejoy Sep 1929

Analysis Of The Causes Of Bank Failures In New Mexico, 1920 To 1925, Tom L. Popejoy

Economics ETDs

From introduction:

Periods of depression in the business cycle which usually follow the boom conditions of prosperity will, in all cases, have a decided effect upon the business of banking. Good banking practice, when the depression sets in, demands a collection of the loans made in the period of prosperity in order to avert the decline in the value of the security behind them. This does not work out in most cases, however. Borrowers are not only unable to repay loans made by the banks in the boom period, but must even have additional funds to carry on their businesses. …

The Identification Of Jocelyn, Mary L. Mccormick Aug 1929

The Identification Of Jocelyn, Mary L. Mccormick

Graduate Thesis Collection

Who was Jocelyn? Did Lamartine's hero have a human counterpart? The question has tantalized readers ever since the kindly priest first crept into their hearts. The vivid reality of his life suggests the possibility of having dwelt in a world of actualities as well as in a realm of make-believe.
