In this thesis I have undertaken to compare the autobiographies of men whose lives were unlike in many respects but alike in this, that though they sought definitely to flee away from God, the heart hunger in their beings allowed them to rest until they returned to His loving embrace. In Francis Thompson's Hound of Heaven and in St. Augustine's Confessions, I shall attempt to find two men who found God after treading devious paths away from Him

The interest of the writer was directed toward the phenomena of color vision in 1927 as a result of attending concurrently two courses in the University of California touching upon the subject, but treating it quite differently with results far from mutually consistent. Prof. R. S. Minor, in his course on physical optics, discussed color vision from the physicist’s standpoint, making use of the Young-Helmholtz theory; while Prof. G. M. Stratton gave the psychological treatment, based upon the Ladd-Franklin theory, as a part of his general psychology. This investigation was carried out in an attempt to determine the nature of some of the physiological changes, particularly the shift in the water balance during the rise in temperature following pyretic doses of cocaine. It is well known that cocaine in sufficiently large doses produces an almost immediate and rapid rise in body temperature associated with increased metabolism and motor activity. Reichert (1). The increased motor activity becomes evident soon after the injection of the cocaine. Extreme restlessness, muscle twitching and tremor progressing into clonic convulsions may be observed. A brief introduction to Nicola Machiavelli is necessary for a better understanding of the influence he exerted upon English thought. He was a descendant of old Florentine nobility and lived from 1469 to 1527. Little is known of his early years and education, but it is evident from his works that he read widely in the Latin and Italian classics, particularly the Roman histories, and that he was a student of men and things. This thesis follows the growth of settlement in Kentucky from the time of her birth as a state in seventeen hundred and ninety-two, to the year eighteen hundred and thirty-seven, a period during which all of the land within her borders was opened for settlement. It does not pretend to relate a complete story of the march across Kentucky, but only to tell the important stages as revealed by the laws governing appropriating of land. The madrigal is the oldest of concerted secular forms. It had its origin in northern Italy, perhaps as early as the twelfth century. The early compositions had none of the elaborate devices which characterize the madrigals of the sixteenth century. Francesco di Landino, (1325-1390), an Italian, and the leading musician of the Florentine school of his time, wrote a madrigal, Tu che l'opera d'altrul, an extract of which appears in Fellowes' English Madrigal (1) Composers. Landino's life is interesting. He was blind from youth, but was organist for many years in the church of San Lorenzo in Florence. His madrigal …

Many experiments have been performed to determine the effect of ultra-violet light upon the growth of plants and animals. The conclusions reached by the experiments concerned are not constant in all cases. The more significant of these studies are here reviewed. Sheard and Johnson (17) state that the skin is the medium which separates the organism, whether it be plant or animal, from its environment. The skin is, therefore, the medium of reception of radiant energy and the seat of transformation or utilization of the incident energy.
