A Survey Of One Hundred Mexican Families In Waco, Texas, Jennie Hylton
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
The object of the survey is to secure data and be using it as a basis, devise, and further plans by which Home Economics, cooperating with civic and church organizations, may improve the home life of the Mexican families in our midst.
The subject chosen is an outgrowth of a deep interest aroused through personal contracts with fourteen Mexican mothers while conducting a class in foods at the Presbyterian Mission and contacts with the daughters by means of Clothing classes organized in a ward school where ninety percent of the children are Mexican. [Taken from Introduction]
Nationalism In Europe, Michael L. Sanfelippo
Nationalism In Europe, Michael L. Sanfelippo
Bachelors’ Theses
In attempting a synthesis of the history of the world as it is known today, there seems to be one aspect under which it can be universally synthesized and that is by a study of the growth and development of nationalism.
An Evaluation Of Third Grade Social Studies In Luckie School Of Houston Texas, Bessie Love Benjamin
An Evaluation Of Third Grade Social Studies In Luckie School Of Houston Texas, Bessie Love Benjamin
All Theses
It is the opinion of many educators that the social studies should become the foundation of all school work. More and more the school is being recognized as a great national agency, for the socialization of individuals. To be socialized means the adaptation and adjustment of an individual to the social group. To be socialized is to be possessed of group consciousness, to be humanized and to be broadminded toward all one's associates and in all relations. A study of man and his activities has always been said to contribute to this end. Therefore the subjects of history, literature, language, …
The Teaching Of History In Secondary Schools, Willie Andrew Tarrow
The Teaching Of History In Secondary Schools, Willie Andrew Tarrow
All Theses
This paper is written for the purpose of setting forth the new attitudes toward the teaching of history in the Secondary Schools. It is the prevailing consensus of opinion that history as a social science or study has failed in a large measure, to accomplish the aims of our present day education. This had been due, in a large measure to the attitudes and interest of the teacher, we shall say. We have failed to get a clear understanding of the field of history and its values to man as a social being. Another reason for the failure of history …
The Central Task In Teaching Speech In The Elementary And The Secondary Schools, Harry A. Ulrich
The Central Task In Teaching Speech In The Elementary And The Secondary Schools, Harry A. Ulrich
Bachelors’ Theses
The oral English problem has repeatedly confronted me as a teacher of literature, English and dramatics in a junior technical high school. Many of my students are badly handicapped by their foreign vernacular. Just how to satisfactorily master this difficulty in order to enable them to speak English better, without their being unduly self-conscious, made it necessary for me to read material that would possibly help me solve this speech problem.
As such material is in the process of experiment, one’s conclusions are naturally only temporary and nascent. The speech periodicals number many intangible writers be¬ cause their conclusions are …
A Course Of Study In History Of The Wausau Schools In Third, Fourth, Fifth And Sixth Grades, Gertrude Mcguine
A Course Of Study In History Of The Wausau Schools In Third, Fourth, Fifth And Sixth Grades, Gertrude Mcguine
Bachelors’ Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to assemble a workable course of study to be used in the teaching of social studies in the intermediate grades of the schools of Wausau. At present, only a limited amount of time may be given to the teaching of the social studies, exclusive of Geography, which is treated separately. Hence a carefully worked out plan is absolutely necessary if we are to obtain the results for which we hope.
Wordsworth's God In Nature, Arnold Graham Walter
Wordsworth's God In Nature, Arnold Graham Walter
Bachelors’ Theses
In this thesis on Wordsworth's God in Nature, I have endeavored to show how the poet through communion with Nature in all its forms was brought into closer relation with the Supreme Being. I have not called him a Pantheist and do not think him such in the strict sense of the word. In my opinion he looked upon God as the beneficent Giver of all that is good in Nature. He believed that Nature was man's best teacher, and that through a knowledge of its ways man could not help but be brought to a fuller understanding of the …
Sporogenesis In Riccia Natans L., Mary Fortunata
Sporogenesis In Riccia Natans L., Mary Fortunata
Bachelors’ Theses
Until comparatively recent years little, comprehensive Cytological work had been done on the lower forms of plant life including the Liverworts. Cavers (1903) stated that Micheli in 1729 named a species "Hepaticae fontana" because of the supposed resemblance between the branched thallus and the lobes of the liver, and although this species was later named "Fegatella conica", the name "Hepaticae" has, since then, been applied to the whole group of Liverworts. Between 1850 and 1862 Hofmeister demonstrated "Alternation of Generations" in this group, and it was this characteristic that distinguished them permanently …
The Gifted Child, Caroline Krause Harling
The Gifted Child, Caroline Krause Harling
Bachelors’ Theses
The idea of providing special educational facilities for children of superior intelligence is by no means a novel one. The subject has recently come to engage a large part of the attention, not only of psychologists and educationists but also of laymen. If nature really endows some children intellectually more generously than she does others - and the data presented in this thesis will convince any fair-minded person that this is the case - the fact is of importance to those who are interested in social advancement as well as to those teachers and parents who are striving to do …
Tungsten Plating, Allen J. Hipp
Tungsten Plating, Allen J. Hipp
Bachelors’ Theses
During the past twenty years electro-plating has undergone a thorough transformation from an art into a science in which physical chemistry is playing an important role. The factors which govern the plating of copper, nickel and brass are well known. Recently new processes have been found for the plating of cadmium and chromium. Metals which give a bright surface and which will take a polish are in great demand. Nickel and chromium answer these requirements, and are used commercially for a variety of uses. Chromium has been a remarkable success as a plated surface because it is both a beautiful, …

Collected Opinions As To The Place Of Character Education In A Democratic Country, Katheryn Louretha Bacoats
Collected Opinions As To The Place Of Character Education In A Democratic Country, Katheryn Louretha Bacoats
All Theses
Character is not something different from education in general, nor is it a subdivision of education. Rather, it is an emphasis, a philosophy, a way of looking at education.
My purpose in writing this thesis has been to carry to you the working truth about Character Education in a Democratic Country, as it appears to me, after several years' study and teaching of Character Education. I have tried to include that which is most important and interesting to you to know in order that you may school yourself and your children or pupils in the ways of the healthy mind …
Some Of The Means Of Caring For Delinquent Children In Secondary Schools, Arnell Elizabeth Spriggs
Some Of The Means Of Caring For Delinquent Children In Secondary Schools, Arnell Elizabeth Spriggs
All Theses
The term "delinquent children" has been subject to a variety of interpretations. A popular conception has been inclined to limit it to those who are slaves to crime and malicious dees. There are some books on delinquent children which deal primarily with those who are mentally retarded. In, truth, however, the term may be considered much more comprehensive than one or both of thses usages would imply. It is in broad sense that the term "delinquent children" is used increasingly in educational thought. Such children are all bound together by the tie of being different, so different that they need …
The Teacher's Interest And Effort In The Educative Process In The Long Prairie Consolidated School, Kerens, Texas, Elberta N. Williams
The Teacher's Interest And Effort In The Educative Process In The Long Prairie Consolidated School, Kerens, Texas, Elberta N. Williams
All Theses
Regarding the school as a great social instrument, education as a process of secial adjustment, and school management as a constructive social undertaking — much stress should be placed upon the importance of the teacher, conceiving clearly the important social purpose of the educative process. The teacher is a director of the activities of children in their pursuit of an education. The functions of the teacher, therefore are not only to direct, but also to formulate much of the policy that is to be executed. To do this she must have some knowledge of the essential working principles upon which …

Teaching Reading In The Primary Grades, Minnie B. Lockett
Teaching Reading In The Primary Grades, Minnie B. Lockett
All Theses
The purpose of this discourse is to show that a real ability in reading will almost always lead to success in school life. It will make school life happier and more profitable and will reap large benefits in the outside-of-school life of the pupil, both during his years in school and after he leaves it.
It is also meant to show that if the child carries over into the higher grades this training which he gets, it will help him get an understanding of, and solution to, the problems of life. The specific purpose of this discourse aims to show …
The Origin And Evolution Of Religion, Bernice Cleo Riley
The Origin And Evolution Of Religion, Bernice Cleo Riley
All Theses
Every religion is a Product of human evolution and has been conditioned by social environment. Since man has developed from even lower than savagery and was once intellectually a mere animal, it is reasonable to attribute to him in that state no more religious consciousness than is possessed by an animal, What then the historian must ask are the factors and what the means whereby humanity has encased itself in this shell of religion, which almost every where has been raised as a protective growth about the social body? The simpliest answer to this question has been that man is …
The Value Of Supervised Study In Waco High School, Charlie Mae Batts
The Value Of Supervised Study In Waco High School, Charlie Mae Batts
All Theses
Supervised study is that plan of school procedure whereby each pupil is so adequately instructed and directed in the methods of studying and thinking that his daily preparation will progress under conditions most favorable to a hygienic, economical, and self reliant career of intellectual endeavor.
The purpose of supervised study on a large scale is to aid in avoiding the large waste of time, energy, and community money that commonly results from the poor or unfortunate students failing to carry on effective study at home. Experimental investigations were reported which show that poor students learn much more effectively under supervised …

Opportunities For The Education Of The Negro Youth In The City Of Houston, Bertha Pear Shelbon
Opportunities For The Education Of The Negro Youth In The City Of Houston, Bertha Pear Shelbon
All Theses
One of the criticisms of the Negro during the years since his emancipation has been his neglect to keep available record of his outstanding achievements in community life, particularly educational. Too much has been left to records and statistical data compiled by the white race. Too often has the task of setting down what the race is achieving in permanent form been left solely to the race historians, who record the average rather than place emphasis upon the social consequences of advancement par excellence. Too little have we attracted attention to our highest attainments. And so, that ample record and …

How Citizenship May Be Developed Through The Course Of Study In Our Secondary Schools., M. K. Barlow
All Theses
The Idea of training citizens in school is not a new one. Time and again, the author has felt the urge to help his pupils in their effort to become good citizens. The outcome of his study and plan to accomplish this aim is set forth in this pamphlet. The preparation of this subject has been inspired by Professor Perry, Prairie View College, my teacher in education, summer 1932. The few suggestions found herein, in most cases, have been tried out in schools where the author has taught and attended. Mention may also be made of the several authors, whose …

Factors That Contribute To The Normal Development Of The Primary Child, Rosie E. Lewis
All Theses
Few parts of the public school system have experienced more intense change in direction, purpose and methods of work during the past quarter of a century than have the primary grades. The child-study movement of the nineties, the further study of individual differences which characterized the first decade of the present century, and the rise of a better curriculum which marked the second decade, have all combined to change, materially, our conception of the child and the method of teaching him. The problem now that confronts the teacher is the ability and aptitudes the child brings to school and how …

Values Of Extra Curricula Activities To The Students Of Charlton-Pollard High School At Beaumont, Texas., Cora L. B. Marion
All Theses
Within the past two decades an entirely new interest in the extra curricula activities of the youth has been taken by the school. In part, this change in attitude has been caused by the new disciplinary problems brought to the school through the recent great popularization of secondary education; in part by the marked increase in leisure time accuring to youth as a result of our increase in wealth and the application of recently enacted child labor laws; in part by the many new temptations to which young people in the present age are subjected, and in part by the …
