A Syllabus Adapted To The Teaching Of English In The Eleventh Grade At Charlton-Pollard High School, Eloise L. Wells Briggs Aug 1932

A Syllabus Adapted To The Teaching Of English In The Eleventh Grade At Charlton-Pollard High School, Eloise L. Wells Briggs

All Theses

This course aims to make the study of representative selections of prose and poetry in the English course for the eleventh grade in Charlton-Pollard High School, Beaumont, Texas more intelligible to the student. Merely telling a student to take certain selections leaves him at sea regarding what to look for or to think about. The result is a careless or mechanical perusal of the assignment, with no distinct impression of its meaning or appeal.

As a means of focusing attention and stimulating thought in reading, nothing is so valuable an aid to young persons as suggestive questions. It is the …

It is because of this that the development of the 4-H Clubs has been so rapid.

The Teaching Of Negro History In The Elementary School, David Joseph Jackson Jul 1932

The Teaching Of Negro History In The Elementary School, David Joseph Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the reasons why there is such a great lack of cooperation within the race is ignorance of race ability. Students in high-school and college often times have but a vague and obscure concept of the Negro race, educationally, industrially, economically, and when in time these students seek to make and adjustment they find themselves handicapped . For this reason in order that, that love of race, that race consciousness, that makes not only for loyal race brothers, but rather which makes for true loyal law abiding citizens of America, Negro History, should find a place in the curriculum …

I shall present my subject by giving …

Correlation Of Art With The School Subjects Of The Upper Grades, Irene E. Cappon

Art pervades every phase of life. Beauty is universal in its appeal. All children seem to delight in form and color from infancy. There seems to be a natural impulse in all to express· thoughts and feelings creatively and constructively through pencils, crayons, paints, clay, wood, and other media. All children find pleasure in seeing their efforts take visible form.

Extra-Curriculum Activities In The Junior High School, Ethel M. Fox Jul 1932

Extra-Curriculum Activities In The Junior High School, Ethel M. Fox

Bachelors’ Theses

The fundamental origin of all students' activities not covered by the curriculum is really a physical urge, round even among primitive people; namely, the element or
play. Play activities are characteristic of primitive people, especially during the adolescent period. Ceremonials and mysteries, the basic features of the lodge, are derivations of this natural urge. It is the ritual idea that helps to keep alive many secret orders, and it is this same ritual idea that makes a dynamic appeal to adolescence. Successful leadership of youth requires an intimate knowledge or the basic appeal of adolescence.

Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker Jul 1932

Problem-Solving In Arithmetic, Eva M. Acker

Bachelors’ Theses

For a century arithmetic has been a popular subject in the elementary schools, and has consumed more time than any other subject. The war had an effect in reducing this time on arithmetic, largely due to the war-time emphasis on health, food production, back-of-the-line morale, and kindred subjects. More recently, school activities and playground work have come in for a reasonable share of the school time. The Twenty-ninth Yearbook recognizes the child as the center of interest, and the final criterion of all values being the effect any technique of teaching or any content of instruction has on the child. …

The Reaction Of Salts On The Regional Muscular Activity Of The Earthworm, Ernest D. Habeger Jul 1932

The Reaction Of Salts On The Regional Muscular Activity Of The Earthworm, Ernest D. Habeger

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Though a great amount of work has been done concerning the effects of salts upon the organic constituents of all muscular tissues of the earthworm, very little has actually been accomplished showing the effect of salts on the rhythmic contractions of that animal. However, the normal peristaltic activity of the muscles of the earthworm has been shown to represent a characteristic behavior from its anterior to its posterior extremity.

It is the purpose of this investigation to demonstrate the effects of various concentrations of salts on this normal rhythmic activity of the various regions of the earthworm.

A Comparison Of Achievement Of The Children From Broken Homes With Those From Unbroken Homes, James Allen Piatt Jul 1932

A Comparison Of Achievement Of The Children From Broken Homes With Those From Unbroken Homes, James Allen Piatt

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Is the boy or girl from a broken home handicapped in his or her school work? There are many factors to be taken into consideration. some of these factors would be a handicap to the children from broken homes, while other would be to their advantage.

There is no question that the furnishing by parents of food, clothing, shelter, and the equipment necessary for the school life is of great advantage. Neither can tehre be any doubt as to the effect of the example, inspiration, and encouragement from the same source. Yet, perhaps, there may be too much aid. The …

An Annotated Bibliography Of The Short Story, Elizabeth Vincent Lanyon Jul 1932

An Annotated Bibliography Of The Short Story, Elizabeth Vincent Lanyon

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

In compiling this annotated bibliography of the short story, I hope to meet a long felt need among teachers and students of the short story. The one bibliography of the short story now existing, the Index to Short Stories by Ina Ten Firkins contains excellent source material but is of small use to one who is not fairly well grounded in the short story. In preparing a bibliography which divides the short stories into types and annotates each story, I hope to provide the beginner in this field with easily available and time-saving material. The teacher of the short story …

A Study Of The Inherent And Environmental Causes Of The Tragedy In Macbeth, Othello, And King Lear, Edna F. Powell Jul 1932

A Study Of The Inherent And Environmental Causes Of The Tragedy In Macbeth, Othello, And King Lear, Edna F. Powell

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

So much has been written by scholars for the past three hundred years regarding Shakespeare that is seems almost presumptuous for one to write more on such a subject. Nevertheless, Shakespeare possesses a universal appeal and so occupies the central channel of human life and thought that he is inexhaustible. Students throughout the world have been challenged to endeavor to interpret him. Realizing the necessity for limitation and the utter impossibility of making a large contribution to the wealth of material which already exists, an attempt has merely been made to study the steps in the downfall of the heroes …

Studies In Resin Formation: I. The Action Of Mercury-Aluminum Catalyst On The Condensation Of Ethylene Dichloride And Benzene, Joseph Jason Crow Jul 1932

Studies In Resin Formation: I. The Action Of Mercury-Aluminum Catalyst On The Condensation Of Ethylene Dichloride And Benzene, Joseph Jason Crow

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Chemists have always met up with the formation of resinous materials in various reactions, but because they were unable to separate in various reactions, but because they were unable to separate the individual parts of these mixtures, the products were not only considered worthless, but their formation often put an end to the investigation in that direction. This formation has always been a stumbling block to the chemist because he had always maintained a purity standard involving crystalline structure and sharp melting points. This need, however for a natural resin substitute has brought about an extensive study of not only …

A Course Of Study In Health Education For The Seventh And Eighth Grades Of The College Junior High School Of Pittsburg, Kansas, Anna Yates Stoffer

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The Department of Home Economics of the Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg is responsible for teaching a course in Health Education to the seventh and eighth grade students of the training school. Since the department had been concerned with the planning of a course of study which would be uniform from year to year, it seemed fitting that a detailed study should be made of the health habits and knowledge of the students in the two grades that information gathered therefrom should be used in formulating a course of study. [Taken from Introduction]

An Outline Of Subject Matter And Supplementary Materials For The Biological Phases Of A General Science Course For Junior High School, Frances Churchill Richmond Jul 1932

An Outline Of Subject Matter And Supplementary Materials For The Biological Phases Of A General Science Course For Junior High School, Frances Churchill Richmond

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

There is an agreement among curriculum constructors that too much emphasis has, in the past, been placed upon giving special training in science courses and that too little consideration has been given in planning the beginners courses so as to allow introductory work in various phases of the subject.

As a textbook course in general science at the junior high school level is often an assemblage of chapters from textbooks on special sciences and allows for very little emphasis upon the environment of the child or the needs of the community, the writer came to the conclusion after two years …
