An Historic Account Of Music Criticism And Music Critics In Utah, Basil Hansen May 1933

An Historic Account Of Music Criticism And Music Critics In Utah, Basil Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

My purpose in making a study of music criticism in Utah is to realize a reliable historical account of criticism as expressed by means of journals and the growth of music within the state. This study, it is granted, is not a complete history of music in Utah. It merely treats one phase of a yet unwritten history.

A secondary interest is to defend the assertion that Utah has had music criticism and not to eulogize or deride the music pioneers of the state. It may also impress the need of constructive criticism to insure the stimulus and incentive necessary …

An Historical Study Of The Industries Of Allen County, Kansas., Clifton B. Huff

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

There is no romance more thrilling and fascinating than the story of the early settlement of Kansas. Organized as a territory when the content for the extension of slavery was at fever heat, it became the battle field of contending forces. The South determined that it should held as a slave territory; the North was as equally determined that it should represent freedom. The struggle drew the gaze of the people upon "Bleeding Kansas."

Allen County was one of the first thirty-three counties established by the first territorial legislature. Thus the county was one of the pioneers in the early …

Ibsen's Use Of Morality, Katherine Frances Jeffers May 1933

Ibsen's Use Of Morality, Katherine Frances Jeffers

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Henrik Ibsen, who, along with Bjornson, was the first to give Norway a theatre of her own, has for years been the target of students, critics, play-goers. In the year 1928, the centennial of his birth, a great number of magazine articles were published; many of them told of his literary death, death without hope of resurrection. However, the number of articles written shows that he is alive in spite of attempts by some critics to kill him. One thing, if none other, will keep him alive in the dramatic literature of the world if not in the hall of …

The Effect Of Diet On The Glucose Content Of Chicken Blood, Julia Melba Mcmillan May 1933

The Effect Of Diet On The Glucose Content Of Chicken Blood, Julia Melba Mcmillan

All Theses

The origin of the glucose found In the blood of animals may be traced to several sources. When a carbohydrate diet is ingested the complex carbohydrates of the diet are converted into monosaccharides or simple sugars. These sugars are generally glucose, fructose, and galactose. The last two sugars, however, are transformed in part into glucose, Fructose, when fed in large amounts, is rapidly changed Into glycogen. Galactose its not stored as readily, and if given in excessive doses is partly excreted in the urine. It is interesting to note, however, that the sugar which Is lost in this way is …

Pasteurized Versus Raw Milk In Brick Cheese-Making, Z. Doyle Roundy May 1933

Pasteurized Versus Raw Milk In Brick Cheese-Making, Z. Doyle Roundy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The prime object of the work undertaken in the present study has been done with the view of determining whether or not the quality and yield of brick cheese may be improved by pasteurizing the milk from which the cheese is made. An effort should be made to put brick cheese-making on a more scientific basis and at the same time produce cheese of better and more uniform quality. Since milk, containing large numbers of undesirable microorganisms thus causing objectionable flavors and odors in dairy products, is frequently delivered to cheese factories to be processed, pasteurization seems to be one …

Bird Studies Of The Bear River Marshes, Ernest W. Parkinson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The establishment of the Bear River Bay Bird Refuge has created for the state of Utah an immense and valuable biological field, a veritable paradise for naturalist and sportsman alike. The naturalist wants a place to study wild life and the sportsman desires game. With the proper control of open seasons on wild fowl the hunting instinct and incentive for the sport should be satisfied for the sportsman. To the naturalist this region will open up bountiful treasures of knowledge that is to be gained only by intense and prolonged scientific study.

Within this new field, and the limited time …

Inheritance Of Resistance To Loose Smut (U. Tritici) In Certain Wheat Crosses, Bion Tolman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During recent years the principles of Mendelism have been used extensively in the production of the new types of plants possessing resistance to various diseases. Results of this mode of attacking the disease problem have been very favorable. Old varieties are gradually giving way to newer types equal to or exceeding in quality and productivity as well as possessing resistance to one or more diseases.

Loose smut (U. tritici) in wheat, while not as serious a problem in Utah as the covered smut (T. tritici), according to Tapke (14) has caused an average annual loss of between 50,000 and 100,000 …

Mathematical Instruments, Marguerite Massey Apr 1933

Mathematical Instruments, Marguerite Massey

Theses & Honors Papers

The selection of a subject for my honors work was determined not only by the desire to gain a broader knowledge of mathematics but also to make a study of something that would be of value in teaching in the state. From a variety of possible topics, the one, mathematical instruments seemed most interesting and appealing. This broad subject had to be narrowed down and made more specific. It was decided to limit it mainly to those instruments which might be used in the teaching of mathematics, these falling into two groups, those which can be made and those which …

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to compare the news of the front pages of the Milwaukee Sentinel, a conservative Republican morning paper and the Milwaukee Leader, a Socialistic evening paper. The comparison is made as to scope and content. As would be expected of two papers holding such widely divergent political views, the type of news which each feature offers little comparison. It is rather a contrast.

A Financial History Of State Education In Virginia, Lewis E. Chittum Apr 1933

A Financial History Of State Education In Virginia, Lewis E. Chittum

Master's Theses

In state finances of Virginia education is second only to highways. The present position of education in the budget was not attained easily. On the contrary it was only through a long process that Virginia came to realize the fundamental duty of educating all the people at public expense. Thus, the extent to which the state has participated in this problem is an all important matter. In the following study, state participation has been reviewed from its earliest beginnings. he colonial period is included, as it reveals the tendencies working for the revelation of the obligation of the government to …

Mission San Juan Bautista California: The Causes And Effects Of Its Rise And Decline, John E. Martin Apr 1933

Mission San Juan Bautista California: The Causes And Effects Of Its Rise And Decline, John E. Martin

Philosophy Doctoral

The immutable law of Cause and Effect affords an interesting gauge for the study of one of California's renowned missions. To compile all of the available data concerning a particular mission, to examine its buildings and grounds minutely and then to seek the Why and the Wherefore, provides an instructive undertaking.

Mission San Juan Bautista, California, the largest of the mission edifices, is a splendid subject for such a study. Why was it built, what was the purpose of its strange closed-off side aisles, why did it decline, what were the results achieved in its history? These are questions which …

Lobbying And Publicity At The State Legislature, Edward N. Novotny

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to make a study of lobbying and lobbyists at the Wisconsin state legislature, especially in regard to the publicity angle. Is newspaper training an advantage to the lobbyist? How does the lobbyist go about his work? How does he secure publicity for hie bills? How does he create sentiment for or against a piece of legislation?

This is a field which has been sadly neglected by writers, although it offers a splendid opportunity for research. The purpose of the writer has not been to criticize or to laud. but to present a few of …

Seven thousand miles west of our Pacific coast - so far west that it is East - lies the western frontier of these United States of America. There in their watery beds lie Christian Luzon, Mohammedan Mindanao and the semi-savage Sulu Archipelago - the chief islands of the group of the Philippine Islands. They are next-door neighbors to the Orient - China and Japan to the north, Siam and India to the northwest, Madagascar to the west and Australia and Borneo - the traditional home of the wild-man - to the south.

A Diagnostic And Remedial Experiment In Grade Four, Lenore M. Gaffney Apr 1933

A Diagnostic And Remedial Experiment In Grade Four, Lenore M. Gaffney

Bachelors’ Theses

Every class of pupils in any grade vary in arithmetical abilities as well as abilities in other subjects. Differences among children are great. The need for a diagnosis becomes very apparent and will indicate what remedial work must be done. Many pupils fail to grasp the process taught and reteaching is necessary if the children are to overcome difficulties and acquire skills in the use of certain facts and principles that are essential. Therefore a diagnostic and remedial program is very important.

The Content Of The High School Biology Course, Paul A. Geenen Apr 1933

The Content Of The High School Biology Course, Paul A. Geenen

Bachelors’ Theses

Ignorance is bliss. Perhaps it is ignorance which prompts youth to attempt problems which the united efforts of experts and specialists have failed to conquer completely. However, there must be one "first attempt"; perhaps the first futile trials will eventually lead to something really worthwhile. This thesis is an attempt to help solve an almost insoluble problem: "What should be included in the high school biology course to give the best results." The work is based very largely on the results of those who have wrestled with the problem and emerged with new ideas; it is an effort to present …

Reading Skills Necessary For Effective Work In The Intermediate Grades, Mildred Geiger Apr 1933

Reading Skills Necessary For Effective Work In The Intermediate Grades, Mildred Geiger

Bachelors’ Theses

Although children entering the fourth grade are often expected to have mastered all reading difficulties, and to possess good study habits, this is frequently not the case. Continued oral reading has developed slow and relatively incompetent readers. The fourth grade teacher must, therefore, by means of diagnostic or informal tests determine to what extent her pupils are prepared for the work that is to be accomplished in the intermediate grades. It is the purpose of this thesis to show what fundamental reading alms and objectives are necessary for effective work in this period and how the writer has attempted to …

The Comparative Anatomy Of The Kidneys, Edward Silberman Apr 1933

The Comparative Anatomy Of The Kidneys, Edward Silberman

Bachelors’ Theses

Most of the Information which I have been able to amass has been taken from text books dealing with the kidney as an excretory organ only. My bibliography, therefore, covers a rather limited field. In it there will be found no articles in the various journals as my endeavors to find any such articles on my particular subject have not met with success. My thesis does not only contain a comprehensive account of the kidney, its weight and size, but also an account of its shape, size and correlation in growth and size to the age and weight of the …

The Making Of Models To Illustrate The Principle Of Plane Polarized Light And The Phenomenon Of Double Refraction., Milton A. Sizer

Bachelors’ Theses

When the author took a course in Optics, and came into contact for the first time with the subject of polarized light and double refraction, he found it exceedingly difficult to visualize the various phenomena which took place. The advantage could easily be seen, of mechanical models made to illustrate the passage of light through glass and other crystals. The object of this thesis is to describe the making of mechanical models which are to be used in teaching the subject of polarization of light.
