Problem Solving, Catherine Ryan May 1933

Problem Solving, Catherine Ryan

Bachelors’ Theses

"A first principle of curriculum determination in arithmetic is: Teach what is useful to average citizens in the everyday affairs of life." This principle is not the only dominating factor. Almost every curriculum has specifics placed there by tradition and speculation. There is considerable uncertainty as to what is useful, and what is not practical. The principle of social utility seems to be gaining prominence. Attempts to discover the 'real' use of arithmetic are being conducted.

Benedict, "The Blessed One", by grace and name, was indeed a man of venerable life. From the very time of his boyhood he guarded his heart like an aged person. Even while still in the world, where he was able to temporal things freely, he already looked down upon this barren earth with tears.

Born of noble parentage in the district of Nursia, Benedict was brought to Rome for the study of letters. Noticing, while there, that many of his …

This was accomplished by selecting full page color advertisements of 75 products appearing in recent issues of the Saturday Evening Post. These were analyzed with the intent of ascertaining if the advertiser chose color (1) to attract attention, or (2) to illustrate his product and secure realism, or (3) to use the innate suggestive power of color. It was recognized, however, that there are other factors that motivate the use of color, but …

First Grade Reading Activities, E. Esther Nimz May 1933

First Grade Reading Activities, E. Esther Nimz

Bachelors’ Theses

After years of scientific research, educators are agreed that in order to teach primary reading successfully, the laws of learning must be utilized. The three important laws which govern learning, are the Laws of Readiness, Effect and Exercise.

As soon as a child shows a desire to read, he should be encouraged to do so and an opportunity should be provided. He should be surrounded with interesting and attractive reading material because according to the law of readiness we find that when a bond is ready to act, it will result "in satisfaction; not to act will result in annoyance.

The Democracy Of Andrew Jackson, Dorothy A. Mccabe

Bachelors’ Theses

Hardly any year in American history so distinctly marks the transition from one era to another as 1829; yet here as elsewhere the new dispensation can be traced back to its foundations in the previous state of things. Therefore, I have opened my discourse with a brief account of Jackson’s early public life so that his later life may be better understood. It has been my object to show in the faithful story of his life the trace he left in the nation’s- history, particularly, his institution of an epoch of democracy. I have not slighted his failings or his …

The subject matter of this study was originally intended to be limited to war appropriation. That, would of necessity confine it to a financial consideration. (From January, 1912 to July 1914.) It was intended to include the six countries aligned in one or the other of the two major alliances of Europe, but as will be explained later, the activities of only a few were …

Communistic Propaganda In America, George V. Huebach

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose or this thesis is to give the reader, if in relatively brief form, a comprehensive idea of present-day Communistic propaganda of the printed page. To fulfill each a purpose to its perfection would obviously require an organization or at least national extension and indefatigable energy for the probable space or a short lifetime. or course, the reasons for this statement lie in the ever increasing amount or propaganda, end particularly in the subtlety of its distribution and circulation. According to the philosophy of Communism, each member is expected to further the cause of the party by individual propaganda …

Guidance For The Worthy Use Of Leisure, Florence E. Conway May 1933

Guidance For The Worthy Use Of Leisure, Florence E. Conway

Bachelors’ Theses

Leisure, once the exclusive privilege of the aristocracy, is in America, to a degree the privilege of the masses . With the development of -scientific methods and machinery the amount of time free from employment has increased, causing leisure to loom up as a gigantic problem. The significance of increasing spare time is most important because of the use that is made of it. The use of anything calls for acts of choice. The more leisure we have, the more choosing is necessary. The present generation having more time at its disposal than had any previous generation in history must …

The Children's Theatre, Marcella Dolan May 1933

The Children's Theatre, Marcella Dolan

Bachelors’ Theses

All normal children are hungry for beauty, and they take delight in seeing their instincts represented on the stage. Too often in the past the mistake has been made of writing and playing down to the children. Their imaginative lives have a dignity of which they are keenly aware, and they resent quite naturally and properly any condescension. In child entertainment it is hard to realize how little is being accomplished, particularly in the field of drama. In education it is probably necessary to start early in order to develop the fever tastes and it is a gradual and arduous …
