Anti-Religious Tendencies Of The Restoration Drama, C. Edward Vaeth Apr 1933

Anti-Religious Tendencies Of The Restoration Drama, C. Edward Vaeth

Bachelors’ Theses

’’Anti-religious tendencies of the Restoration drama” is a subject which in this age of science and skepticism should interest us. A rough parallel might be drawn from a comparison of Restoration drama, life, and ensuing reaction and the modern theatre, life, and the reaction which is yet to be experienced. However, this thesis undertakes to examine only the Restoration drama and its anti-religious tendencies. An inspection of all the Restoration plays seemed superfluous to me since those dramas which I selected seemed representative of the general output of the period, being written, as they are, by both major and minor …

Old Father Rhine, Its Castles And Legends Linked Forever With The Story Of Germany, Helen Visel Apr 1933

Old Father Rhine, Its Castles And Legends Linked Forever With The Story Of Germany, Helen Visel

Bachelors’ Theses

Any natural phenomenon stirs one's imagination so that at times man takes great pains and expends much energy to find the cause of the event of the source from which it proceeds, and so it is with a river. The first question that rises is, "Where is its source?"

Marionettes A Project In The Elementary Schools, Lucille Sohrweide Apr 1933

Marionettes A Project In The Elementary Schools, Lucille Sohrweide

Bachelors’ Theses

For centuries the puppets and marionettes have held an important place in philosophy and the theater world. A simile comparing mankind with puppets with the gods controlling the strings has long been the favorite of the philosophers. Plato compared man with a doll and his passions to the strings which caused its movements and actions. Aristotle told man to be a puppet of wood to be controlled or guided not by men like themselves, but by the Superior Being.

The Poetry Of Robert Southwell, Therese Lentfoehr Apr 1933

The Poetry Of Robert Southwell, Therese Lentfoehr

Bachelors’ Theses

Thus did Grace speak on that harp of God, which was the soul of Robert Southwell, and so ineffable was the music awakened therefrom that its exquisite echo has come down to us through the gloom of three centuries. His life was at once that of a poet, a priest, and a martyr, of the age of Elisabeth, that haughty and dread wielder of the English sceptre. Of his life and writings, sad to tell, only too little has been known, and in the recordings of literature he has been either "overlooked, or else buried in a homely foot-note."

Leisure And Reading, Pauline Stemmler Apr 1933

Leisure And Reading, Pauline Stemmler

Bachelors’ Theses

Our pleasures are no longer those of our forefathers. With the advent of the motor car, the plane, the radio, and innumerable other modern inventions, life for us has taken on a new aspect. Ours is no longer a day of endless toil and struggle. The hardships of pioneer days have come to an end. Ours is a modern civilization, where machinery and manifold labor-saving devices have made possible shorter working hours and a greater margin for leisure, thus leaving time for play and for the pursuits of individual interests. The increased leisure may be an important contribution to a …

The Visiting Teacher, Agnes Lu Liberate Apr 1933

The Visiting Teacher, Agnes Lu Liberate

Bachelors’ Theses

The children in our schools who need the most attention are; children of slightly sub-normal level, the average, and the superior in intelligence, who will not play; work with their comrades; who are over active both in work or play; who appear indifferent to the good opinion of others, or over eager for it; those who are constantly failing in their lessons; and those who persistently lie, steal, and misbehave both in and out of school.

The Problem Method Of Teaching Geography In The Junior High School, Adela E. Ludwig Apr 1933

The Problem Method Of Teaching Geography In The Junior High School, Adela E. Ludwig

Bachelors’ Theses

To teach well one must have some definite plan or method to follow just as it is absolutely necessary in the modern business world to give time and attention to method so it is vitally necessary to have a method of teaching, if one wishes to get results, or to progress. I do not contend that the method which I am going to discuss is the "one and only" or the "infallible" method of teaching geography. I have simply selected this one method in preference to others, by which one can do successful teaching, because I am most interested in …

Reading In The Upper Grades, Catherine A. Mcdonnell Apr 1933

Reading In The Upper Grades, Catherine A. Mcdonnell

Bachelors’ Theses

There are two large values of wide experience gained through reading. The first is its contribution to the broad, well rounded development of the reader. If chosen wisely and properly, reading materials will extend the experiences of boys and girls, enlarge and correct their fund of information and stimulate their habits of good thinking. The second value gained through wide reading is that it contributes to the development of power to interpret effectively what is read. The fact is generally recognized that a reader of wide experience interprets what he reads far better than one of limited experience. If reading …

The Eighteenth Amendment And The Volstead Act, Agnes G. Taugher Apr 1933

The Eighteenth Amendment And The Volstead Act, Agnes G. Taugher

Bachelors’ Theses

The prohibition act, which was set into motion by the enactment of the Volstead Law to enforce the Eighteenth Amendment of the Constitution, is a form of legislation which attempts to direct the morals of the people. In this it is unique, for it either imposes restrictions upon unwilling minorities by a majority or vice versa. The Volstead Law, which was the crowning act in this attempt, came as the result of slow but persistent victories in the separate states.

Reading In The Primary Grades, Doris May Watrous Apr 1933

Reading In The Primary Grades, Doris May Watrous

Bachelors’ Theses

Probably no subject in the school curriculum has been as widely discussed and investigated during the past decade as reading. Many notable changes have resulted from the scientific studies and scholarly discussions of the psychology of reading. The majority of teachers are keenly aware of the fact that these changes in procedure have done much to improve the efficiency of the reading program. The purpose of this paper is to present the general objectives of all reading activities, and, more specifically, the aims in each of the first three grades; to state, to discuss, and to evaluate the various methods …

Intramural Athletics In Senior High Schools, David J. Ritger

Bachelors’ Theses

I have written this thesis for it will not only be beneficial to me in regard to obtaining knowledge about the subject, but in later years, should I obtain a position as a physical director I will be able to take charge of intramural work of the school. The thesis is based on a variety of readings, including several books written by the more well known authors of intramural athletics like Mitchell, Elmer D. "Intramural Athletics and Play Days". Some of the material also was obtained through the auspices of two coaches of Wisconsin High Schools who answered and returned …

Political Ideals Of Woodrow Wilson, Lillian Beatrice Degentesh Apr 1933

Political Ideals Of Woodrow Wilson, Lillian Beatrice Degentesh

Bachelors’ Theses

The birth or this nation was the Revolution. A republic was created based upon traditions of personal liberty. American history has been the re-creation in each generation of that which was conceived at first. This re-creation has been necessary to America, because she has not grown only by the multiplication or the "original stock." It is easy to preserve tradition by the multiplication of the "original stock"; but it is not easy when the race is being renewed from other.sources. Each generation has witnessed strangers "indoctrinated." with American principles and has also witnessed how easy that infection has been. "For …

Safety Education In The Intermediate Grades, Grace M. Brett Apr 1933

Safety Education In The Intermediate Grades, Grace M. Brett

Bachelors’ Theses

One of the purposes of the school is to enable the child to adjust himself to the natural and social environment in which he must. work and live. Managers of large industries have been coping with the problem of safety for many years. It is their contention that safety must be made a part and parcel of every member of a community. People must be brought to think of safety on the same basks as good health. Statistics show that two-thirds of all the accidental deaths occur outside of industries, which emphasizes the importance of a campaign to promote safety …

An Historical Criticism Of Winston Churchill's The Crisis, Richard O. Bellinghausen Apr 1933

An Historical Criticism Of Winston Churchill's The Crisis, Richard O. Bellinghausen

Bachelors’ Theses

To begin with, before setting out upon a particular scholarly duty, it is well to clarify, in as concrete a manner as is possible, the problem confronting one, and the objective which is to be the desired end of the research. Applying this principle to the present work the problem to be solved is that of the historical accuracy of a representative work by Winston Churchill, dealing with the Civil War in the United States, having in mind specifically the historical references and allusions made concerning conditions in Missouri, which was a typical border state of the wartime era.

The Intellectual And Social Achievements During The Age Of Louis Xiv, William M. Bell Apr 1933

The Intellectual And Social Achievements During The Age Of Louis Xiv, William M. Bell

Bachelors’ Theses

History is primarily a cultural study of events, characters and movements that have taken place during the ages. The purpose of this study, however, is not to memorize dates of particular events or characters but to view it with a study from a philosophical view point. Various ages are outstanding in European history in which man has been politically, socially, and intellectually benefited, therefore we make special mention of the Seventeenth Century in which the Age of Louis XlV is characteristic. Due to the policies of Devine Right advocated by Mazarin and Richelieu, Louis XlV was able to rule as …

Department Store Advertising, James Fleming Apr 1933

Department Store Advertising, James Fleming

Bachelors’ Theses

The primary purpose in the writing of this thesis on "Department Store Advertising" is to give the department store viewpoint in the conduct of advertising, with the newspaper as a focal medium. Volumes have been written regarding the newspaper's side in this kind of advertising, but the advertisers have received little mention. It is to this end that a study was made of the conduct of advertising by these retail establishments and this thesis will embody the findings.

A Comparison Of Roman Slavery: As We Find It In The Republic Of The Comic Poets And The Empire, Edward G. Fleisner Apr 1933

A Comparison Of Roman Slavery: As We Find It In The Republic Of The Comic Poets And The Empire, Edward G. Fleisner

Bachelors’ Theses

In exploring human nature as a whole, we are rather surprised to find that despite the centuries which have rolled by, human nature remains quite the same. Evolutionists may possibly contradict this statement in asserting that the weathering process of the centuries has produced a mellowing effect, and that the world is a much better place to live in now than it had been thirty centuries ago. That may or may not be true, all, of course, depending on the method and terms used in defining progress and uplift. If by progress we mean complicated society and intricate ma chines, …

Motion Pictures In Education, S. O. Opsahl Apr 1933

Motion Pictures In Education, S. O. Opsahl

Bachelors’ Theses

Schools have long been in existence but until . recent years little has been done to attempt to adapt them to the interests and needs of children so as to better fit them to take their place in the work of the world. As this purpose of education has been coming into prominence, methods for accomplishing it have brought many problems before the educators. Changes in methods of teaching, enrichment of the courses of study, and the extension of equipment for teaching, are factors which have been brought forward toward forwarding the real purposes of education.

Organization And Administrative Relationships Of The Departments Of Physical Education And Health In Various Wisconsin High Schools, Joseph J. Kores Apr 1933

Organization And Administrative Relationships Of The Departments Of Physical Education And Health In Various Wisconsin High Schools, Joseph J. Kores

Bachelors’ Theses

The field of Physical Education is virtually a new field of endeavor. It has been coming into its rightful position in the field of Education so rapidly that our institutions of learning are wantonly neglectful of its importance.

The Board of Education of the State of Wisconsin requires that all High Schools shall have a Physical Education program. As a rule all High Schools fulfill this requirement. But as there are no specifications enforced, as to how the Physical Education program should be carried on, each school organizes its program according to its own tastes.

This survey clearly indicates the …

Play And Recreation For Crippled Children, Erna Nabke

Bachelors’ Theses

There has been no time in the history of our country in which private philanthropy has given so much attention to the problem of the crippled child as in the last decade.
