Captain Charles Maria Weber, Pioneer, J. T. Aungst Jan 1934

Captain Charles Maria Weber, Pioneer, J. T. Aungst

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

I have chosen to portray the life of a man about whom no book has been written. His very name is known to few outside of San Joaquin County, yet his part in laying the foundation for an American California, and developing a goodly portion of it, was considerable.

NOTE: The copy of this thesis was poor and difficult to scan. We apologize for the quality of the text.

The Oberammergau Passion Play As A Survival Of The Medieval Miracle Play, Carolyn Pulciver Timm Jan 1934

The Oberammergau Passion Play As A Survival Of The Medieval Miracle Play, Carolyn Pulciver Timm

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The contributions of the Mediaeval Miracle Play to that of the Passion Play of Oberammergau are like those of a parent to a child. Life and form have been inherited but the development has gone far beyond the origin. Yet certain elements have continually been preserved in this same form and life

The material for the story of the Oberammergau Play was in the Mediaeval Miracle Play. In both cases the dramatic climax was reached on Good Friday with the gospel of our Lord's death upon the cross. Christ's entry into Jerusalem, the story of His birth, His active career, …

Football Injuries At The College Of The Pacific 1924 To 1933, Robert L. Breeden Jan 1934

Football Injuries At The College Of The Pacific 1924 To 1933, Robert L. Breeden

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The interest in football injuries has increased with the increased enthusiasm for the sport. The coach is finding it more and more important to have all of his players in the best possible condition to withstand the terrific strain under which they must compete. The public wants to see a well played, exciting game, but the days of brutality seem to be vanishing. The average fan would rather see the best players play in the game than to have them sit on the bench in plaster casts.

This has led to a series of quite wide-spread investigations dealing with the …

Typical Teaching Procedure For Socialized Activities In The Middle Grades, Mabel Culmer Jan 1934

Typical Teaching Procedure For Socialized Activities In The Middle Grades, Mabel Culmer

Graduate Thesis Collection

So rapid is the spread of the progressive movement in the schools that everywhere supervisors are urging their teachers to adopt newer ways of doing things. In many cases, however, teachers are concerned and at a loss as to where to turn for assistance. Too often teachers, urged on by eager supervisors and critics, blindly adopt mechanical and formal methods - isolated subject-matter "units" which are a mere succession of artificial "topics".

The Treatment Of Nature In The Poetry Of Coleridge, Esther S. Brenton Jan 1934

The Treatment Of Nature In The Poetry Of Coleridge, Esther S. Brenton

Graduate Thesis Collection

The treatment of nature by the English Romantic poets of the nineteenth century is commonly thought to be confined to the poetry of Wordsworth. Although the bulk of Wordsworth's poetry is concerned with nature, a study of the poetry of the period reveals that the other great Romanticists were also interested in nature. This thesis is written to show how great a factor the treatment of nature is in the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The History And Development Of The American Business Corporation Before 1800, Lyle L. Mabe Jan 1934

The History And Development Of The American Business Corporation Before 1800, Lyle L. Mabe

Graduate Thesis Collection

An attempt has been made by the author in the pages which follow to show the development in a rather detailed manner of the American business corporation previous to and through the eighteenth century. The early chapters of this work have seemed advisable because they give the reader a general background which the author believes is beneficial in interpreting the latter part of the work.

The Influence Of The Greek Drama Upon Eugene O'Neill's "Mourning Becomes Electra", Nancy Moore Jan 1934

The Influence Of The Greek Drama Upon Eugene O'Neill's "Mourning Becomes Electra", Nancy Moore

Graduate Thesis Collection

In his "Mounring Becomes Electra", Eugene O'Neill has taken a great and renowed classical theme and has given it a modern interpretation in the light of his interest in Freudian psychology. In this thesis I have tried to show first the chief details in connection with the Orestea theme as it is given to us by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. I have then analyzed the characters in the Greek dramas since Eugene O'Neill's primary interest in his character.

The Law Of Pardon For Sin As Reflected In The Records Of The New Testament, Charles V. Jones Jan 1934

The Law Of Pardon For Sin As Reflected In The Records Of The New Testament, Charles V. Jones

Graduate Thesis Collection

The following is an attempt to make an unbiased search in the records of the New Testament to determine, if possible, the order of the steps to be taken by a person seeking pardon for sin. No attempt is being made to substantiate any preconceived theory. The study was prompted by a desire to settle in my own mind, by an unprejudiced search through the records, the question concerning the Law of Pardon to which I had heard many varying answers.

The Changing Methods In The Teaching Of English Composition Since 1850, Eva H. Lycan Jan 1934

The Changing Methods In The Teaching Of English Composition Since 1850, Eva H. Lycan

Graduate Thesis Collection

During the depression public education has been subjected to serve criticism by the taxpayers who are demanding retrenchment in the schools.  Some critics have asserted that the methods of teaching and the subject matter of such basic courses as English have undergone few changes since those days of the little red school house when a teacher could be hired for a "song".  These statements have raised in the minds of those most interested such questions as - What have been the changes in the methods of the teaching of English composition since 1850?

The Production Of Oxalic, Citric, And Gluconic Acids From Plantation Molasses, John A. Ruth Jan 1934

The Production Of Oxalic, Citric, And Gluconic Acids From Plantation Molasses, John A. Ruth

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This research was undertaken for the purpose of developing a process for producing citric and gluconic acids from plantation molasses.

There is an evident need for such a process. At the present time, these acids are being produced by processes in which refined sugar is the principal raw material. If molasses could be used in place of refined sugar, the cost of raw materials would be reduced by approximately ninety percent. In addition, a waste product would be utilized.

The scope of this problem is very broad. Its solution will involve the solving of many problems of widely varying natures. …

The History Of The Owens Valley And The Los Angeles Water Controversy, Richard C. Wood Jan 1934

The History Of The Owens Valley And The Los Angeles Water Controversy, Richard C. Wood

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis was not written for the purpose of condemning the city of Los Angeles. The author has lived in the valley since 1918 and has been present during the period of conflict. Perhaps, for this reason, he is not qualified to judge the actions of the city. But the conclusions that have been made criticizing Los Angeles, the author sincerely believes, have come as a result of the investigation necessary to write this paper.

Even if it is granted that the criticisms are inspired by prejudice, if the reader accepts the facts presented in this thesis, or investigates the …

The Early History Of Tuolumne County, California, Frank C. Coates Jan 1934

The Early History Of Tuolumne County, California, Frank C. Coates

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The youth of America should be acquainted with the history, the development and the ideals of our nation. They should know under what conditions our nation had its birth; what problems have beset it; and how they have been solved. The should know something of our present problems, and such knowledge can be built only upon an understanding of the past. They should know the facts of our nation's history, of which they should be proud.

Not only is this true of our nation, but it is as true of our state and our immediate locality. It has been my …

Handbook On Teacher Reading In Junior And Senior High School, Reba Galvin Mack Jan 1934

Handbook On Teacher Reading In Junior And Senior High School, Reba Galvin Mack

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Two thousand high school students in Wisconsin were tested recently in reading; one-third of them tested as sixth grade or below in reading ability.1 One of the most difficult problems confronting the schools of America today is "How shall we make good readers of our students?" That no educators are satisfied with the reading accomplishments in our schools is attested by the great number of articles on reading that appear in current periodicals and educational journals and by the increasing number of books on reading that are being published. So great is the flood on technical treatises on the …
