Reading is the most important subject in the curriculum. It is the most fundamental because nearly all of the other subjects depend upon it's a source of information and classification. "Reading is a tool by which subject matter in all fields is interpreted and experienced."

By means of reading the pupil can extend his experience away from his immediate environment and gather the interesting information and vital facts, that provide the settings and the backgrounds needed for interpretation and for constructive thinking in all the varied fields of human endeavor. "Reading is the key that unlocks the great storehouse of …

Erosion Control In Chaco Canyon, New Mexico For The Preservation Of Archaeological Sites, William Chauvenet Jun 1935

Erosion Control In Chaco Canyon, New Mexico For The Preservation Of Archaeological Sites, William Chauvenet

Anthropology ETDs

No accurate maps have been made of the whole region covered by this report. A very excellent aerial survey has been made of the Navajo Reservation, but this does not extend more than eight miles east of Wijiji, and does not show quite all of the Chaco canyon. No profile or cross-section of Chaco Canyon exists, except for the maps made by the National Parks Service. As these cover only about three-quarters of a mile, they are not of great assistance in matters concerned with the grade of the stream bed. They are a valuable start, however, and they have …

The Divergent Views Of Catholicism And Protestantism On The Old Testament Apocrypha, Henry L. Lieske Jun 1935

The Divergent Views Of Catholicism And Protestantism On The Old Testament Apocrypha, Henry L. Lieske

Bachelor of Divinity

However, of this one-third, or 680,000,000, about 475,000,000 are members of the Roman and Greek Catholic Churches, and about 205,000,000 belong to Protestantism. Now it becomes evident that the above-mentioned theme is a study of great importance, when it is stated that even in Christianity there is a difference of opinion, there are divergent views, as to what constitutes the Bible, the Word of God. In the Roman Catholic Bible are found certain books that are not found 1n the Protestant Bible. This fact has often given offence to that two-third non-Christian population, and also to that one-third in the …

An Analysis Of "Die Versunkene Glooke" - Hauptmann, Dorothea Vendt Jun 1935

An Analysis Of "Die Versunkene Glooke" - Hauptmann, Dorothea Vendt

Bachelors’ Theses

"Vom Vater hab' ich die Statur, des Lebens arnstes Fuhren. Vom Mutterchen die Frohnatur, die Lust zu fabulieren." Goethe said these words, and well may they be repeated by Gerhart Hauptmann, for in a few words the above lines characterize the man and his parents. Hauptmann's physique and the physical qualities which gave him such a very fine appearance he inherited from his father, as the above words indicate. From his mother he inherited the spiritual qualities, and the art of telling and writing stories.

The Works Of The Missioners In Florida And New Spain Up To The Year 1600, Milton F. Trost

Bachelors’ Theses

The Works of the Missioners in Florida and New Spain up to the year 1600 follows and records the endeavors of these men as they tried to convert the Indians to the Catholic faith. The main expeditions into the new territories are described in part. Credit is given to Narvaez, De Soto, Coronado, and Onate for the work they did in opening up the territory so that the Friars could more easily enter into it. The great explorers, for the most part, did not stay in the wild country after their work was accomplished. They were either soon killed or …

The Significance Of Andrew Jackson’S Politics, Leo W. Mack Jun 1935

The Significance Of Andrew Jackson’S Politics, Leo W. Mack

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is to deal with the political life of Andrew Jackson, therefore little consideration will be given to his boyhood and youth. Of Jackson’s adolescence little la known except that he was afforded only a meagre education. Of exceptionally poor parentage Jackson secured his early legal education in a nomadic fashion. He did not confine his studies to the tutoring of one individual but rather, as his family changed their residences, he entered new offices. History has not left us the names of any one of his legal advisors but we know that he was admitted to the bar …

Surgical Judgement, James M. Neville Jun 1935

Surgical Judgement, James M. Neville

Bachelors’ Theses

The title of this paper allows wide latitude of discussion, and shall, therefore, not be limited to any particular phase but rather to its broader and more general aspect; and yet, not wishing to sacrifice the concrete for the abstract, the writings and experiences of others shall be used freely so that this treatise may prove not only interesting but that it may also serve to emphasize the importance of good surgical judgement.

Changes In Cultural Phases Of Ancient And Modern Mexico, Mary Harmacek

Bachelors’ Theses

This is a thesis on Mexico, Mexicans and the changes in ancient and modern cultural phases that have developed there since the Spanish conquest. It is the result or careful study of the works of authentic writers, backed by three summer seasons in attendance at the National University of Mexico and accented by close contact with members or all classes of inhabitants over quite a large portion of the country. In gathering the material based on personal contact I was aided by leaders in education, especially history, archeology, science and art; I was also aided by two local representatives of …

The Scriptural Doctrine Of The Atonement With Special Reference To The False Theories Of Atonement, Arnold V. Kuster Jun 1935

The Scriptural Doctrine Of The Atonement With Special Reference To The False Theories Of Atonement, Arnold V. Kuster

Bachelor of Divinity

It is a well known fact that the Lutheran, that is, the scriptural, doctrine of the atonement is being denied and even ridiculed throughout the theological world. Substitute theories have been set up, about whose banners theologians have rallied and continue to rally. Such is the situation which calls forth this study of the scriptural doctrine of the atonement, with special reference to the false theories of atonement.

The Neo-Classic Elements In Cowley's Works, Leonard C. Scweitzer Jun 1935

The Neo-Classic Elements In Cowley's Works, Leonard C. Scweitzer

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this work is to bring to the reader's knowledge one of the greatest Seventeenth Century poets. An intense treatment would, however, necessitate the writing of volumes for, although Abraham Cowley is now considered by modern critics an unreadable poets, his works are numerous and contain many valuable ideals. To his contemporaries Cowley ranked supreme. John Milton's wife is said to have reported that her husband's favorite English poets were Spenser, Shakespeare, and Cowley. While Dryden declared to one of his associates, "His authority is almost sacred to me."

The Psychic Ego Of William James, Mary Of Mercy Mcgucken Jun 1935

The Psychic Ego Of William James, Mary Of Mercy Mcgucken

Bachelors’ Theses

An amazing originality and. perfection of style, a marvelously vivid, and delicate feeling for concrete realities, a penetrating vision in the realms of the particular, an aptitude for seizing on that which was characteristic and unique made William James one of the most brilliant psychological writers of his day. Although he appreciated, as few are capable of doing, the material beauty of objects round about him, it was to the observation of the mysterious and fascinating psychic experience that he resolved to devote his great genius and exceptional mental powers

Background And Present Contributions Of The School Sisters Of Notre Dame, Frank M. Bruce Jr. Jun 1935

Background And Present Contributions Of The School Sisters Of Notre Dame, Frank M. Bruce Jr.

Bachelors’ Theses

Mother says she sent me off to school when I was only five and that the School Sisters of Notre Dame were given charge of my early education, but I was too young to remember. Yet whet I do remember is that these Sisters did guide my course thru the elementary school, that they were the first added instruments in my education. I remember particularly well my First Communion, my Confirmation, the first Mass I served at. Each ot these was guided by a School Sister and supplemented by our parish priest. I am very grateful to them.
