This study is an attempt to describe briefly the evolution of history texts for high schools in the United States, beginning with the early nineteenth century and extending to the present time.  It seeks to show that the objectives of the textbooks have changed to keep pace with the changing conceptions and ideals in the life of a people, whose past they attempt to interpret and whose present they try to explain.

Soil Nutrient losses have followed closely in the paths of advancing frontiers in agriculture. Remedies for depletion as the result of overcropping were sought by George Washington, whose interest and investigation of soil nutrient losses probably represent the earliest attention given to land exploitation in the United States, which at the present time has become a problem of national concern. Soil losses have been attributed to a number of causes , among which are cropping, erosion, leaching, burning, and rapid oxidation of organic matter in the soil. Our American forefathers, with the exception of Thomas Jefferson, had no ideal of a system of universal education. His plans were throttled by slavery, but the doctrine of universal education lived. Then at a time when the whole system of common schools was in danger of failure Horace Mann gave his life to the promotion of the interests of the Common school.

A Study Of The Native Trees Of Amador County, Guy V. Towsley

The region covered by this study reaches from the valley floor of the San Joaquin-Sacramento Valley, with an altitude of about 150 feet, to the top of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, whose peaks, in Amador County, reach to more than 9000 feet. Mokelumne Peak has an altitude of 9371 feet. The north and south distance, across the county at Ione, is 22 miles, while at Cook's Station, it is barely 5 miles. Amador County has an area of about 600 square miles.

Thus, a study of trees in this county, gives a fairly representative cross-section picture of the Sierras at …
