The Element Of Experience In The Poetry Of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Bernard Marshall White-Hurst Jan 1937

The Element Of Experience In The Poetry Of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Bernard Marshall White-Hurst

Master's Theses

Coleridge is generally recognized as a highly imaginative poet. Students are too prone therefore to regard his poetry as directly the product of his active imagination. It is the object of this study to show instead that his poetry is based largely upon his actual experiences. I have attempted to demonstrate this fact by giving supply the facts of Coleridge's life, as fully in detail as I have been able to ascertain them, and by correlating them with certain references and materials in his poems. The selections have been grouped according to biographical chronology rather than sequences of composition, which …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a continuation of a study made by Gabriel Lundy, Department of Agricultural Economics, South Dakota State College, on Mortgage Loans on Farm Real Estate in areas consisting of three townships in each of Haakon, Hyde, Clark, Brookings, and Turner counties. The previous studies cover the period 1910-1930. The present study gives the main emphasis on the five year period, 1931 to 1935, pieturing the comparative information from the five sample areas studied. For the purpose of giving a historical sketch, a number of tables have been included which give the conditions in each of the sample areas for …

A Study Of Production And Marketing Of Butterfat And Butter In South Dakota, Lyle Morgan Bender Jan 1937

A Study Of Production And Marketing Of Butterfat And Butter In South Dakota, Lyle Morgan Bender

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Even a most superficial study of the South Dakota dairy industry indicated its economic importance to the state. Dairying, though not of major importance, utilizes a relatively huge physical production plant, spread out on most every farm. It includes processing and marketing facilities, of which the creamery and cream station are most important. In 1935, dairying constituted one of the state's more stable industries, providing about 15.7 percent of the gross income of South Dakota farmers. It ranked second to wheat, which accounted for 18.7 percent of the total gross income. All cattle and calves, hogs, and cora are ranked …

Management Of County-Owned Lands In Northwestern South Dakota: With Special Reference To Leasing Procedure, Charles W. Loomer Jan 1937

Management Of County-Owned Lands In Northwestern South Dakota: With Special Reference To Leasing Procedure, Charles W. Loomer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of land ownership patterns in northwest South Dakota has revealed that, in 1936, eight counties owned approximately 787 thousand acres of tax-deed and school fund foreclosure land. This is only one indication of the vast amount of public ownership in this area. On the same date there were nearly 984 thousand acres of common school endowment lands, approximately 387 thousand acres of land belonging to public corporations, and some 328 thousand acres of Federal land. Total public ownership amounted to slightly less than two and a half million acres which is approximately 21 per cent of the estimated …

The Association Of Relief Status Of The Farm Operators In South Dakota With The Size Of Farms Operated And With Various Personal Characteristics Of The Farm Operators, Zetta E. Bankert Jan 1937

The Association Of Relief Status Of The Farm Operators In South Dakota With The Size Of Farms Operated And With Various Personal Characteristics Of The Farm Operators, Zetta E. Bankert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to determine the extent the relief status of the farm operator in South Dakota may be associated with various sizes of farms maintained. The author offers this particular study as one that has a decided bearing upon the relief situation in South Dakota 1934 to 1936 as that problem was decreased or augmented by the size of farm. The problem of relief, in the past discussed as poverty and pauperism, has been considered essentially a social problem. Poverty has been thought and written of as a pathological social condition, although few sociological students have …

An Investigation Of Some Addition Complexes Of Magnesium Bromide With Organic Substances, John E. Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is commonly known that several magnesium bromide ordinarily exists in the hexahydrated form, however very little mention has been made in the literature to the complexes which magnesium bromide forms with organic substances. The etherate has been studied by Evens and Rowly (1) and the free energy of magnesium bromide has been determined through the etherate by Scherer and Newton (2).

A Study Of Methods For The Recovery Of Silver, Bromine, Iodine, And Sodium Thiosulfate From Used Photographic Fixing Baths, Leroy Agustave Bay Jan 1937

A Study Of Methods For The Recovery Of Silver, Bromine, Iodine, And Sodium Thiosulfate From Used Photographic Fixing Baths, Leroy Agustave Bay

Masters Theses

"Sodium thiosulfate was one of the pioneer reagents used in photography, and is still the most important reagent used in photographic fixing. The solubility of the silver halides in an excess of sodium thiosulfate makes it important as a reagent for removing the undeveloped silver halides from the film. The life of a fixing bath is controlled by the halogen content. As the ratio of halogens to sodium thiosulfate is increased, the time required for fixing is also increased until the ratio reaches such a point that fogging of the film results. Most of the solutions are discarded long before …

Unicameral Government, Howard C. Raether Jan 1937

Unicameral Government, Howard C. Raether

Bachelors’ Theses

Bicameralism~the division of legislative bodies into two chambers-originated six centuries ago in the parliament of England. This two chamber parliament provided for a separating of the estates; which existed in England at that time and gave the groups an opportunity to check each others acts. The nobility and clergy made up the higher chamber whereas the common people comprised the lower house. In this parliament a majority of each group had to assent to each bill before it would become a law.

What Makes Big News Stories, Gordon R. Lewis Jan 1937

What Makes Big News Stories, Gordon R. Lewis

Bachelors’ Theses

Since so many elements of interest and importance are evident in an examination of the "big" news stories of any year, this study was made for the purpose of determining whether or not there could be found any norms or standards by which the "bigness" of news stories could be determined.

It is also the aim of this work to learn whether the factors which make a story one of the biggest one year recur in the selection of the big stories for another year.

In examining and analyzing the lists of stories, an attempt is made to see if …

French Origins Of American Imagist Poetry, Beatrice Hope Zedler Jan 1937

French Origins Of American Imagist Poetry, Beatrice Hope Zedler

Bachelors’ Theses

Every reader, I am sure, has at one time or another chanced upon a passage which instantly struck his attention by its resemblance to something else which he had read. He may have dismissed this occurrence as a merely accidental similarity, or he may have questioned whether one work had influenced the other. The latter has been my experience. In reading the poetry of Theophile Gautier, I was startled by its similarity to some of the poetry of Amy Lowell and by its adherence to two of the principles of Imagism, as set forth by Miss Lowell in the preface …

The Neutrality Legislation Of The United States In 1935-1936, Ralph Edward Houseman Jan 1937

The Neutrality Legislation Of The United States In 1935-1936, Ralph Edward Houseman

Bachelors’ Theses

The depression of 1929, the refusal of the nations to pay their war debts, and the revelations of the Nye investigating committee have brought most Americans to a thumping realization that war. its causes and cures, is more than a matter of kahki shirts, bursting bombs, and eloquent catch phrases. In fact, so patent is this realisation that no one but a most intrepid citizen or a junior high school civics teacher would dare to utter the words "To make the world sate for democracy" with anything but a sneer. If, as Charles Beard says, "In the course of forty …

Bachelors’ Theses

In addition to tracing the lineage from its start as The Milwaukee Advertiser to the inception of The Wisconsin News in 1919, the thesis also includes the drastic changes in makeup and, in detail, describes the national and local editorial policies.

An Historical Newspaper Study Of The Cuban Insurrection, February, 1895, To April, 1898, As Adapted From A Comparative Survey Of The News And Editorial Content Of The Milwaukee Journal And The New York Press, Alphons J. John Jan 1937

An Historical Newspaper Study Of The Cuban Insurrection, February, 1895, To April, 1898, As Adapted From A Comparative Survey Of The News And Editorial Content Of The Milwaukee Journal And The New York Press, Alphons J. John

Bachelors’ Theses

To devote a portion of his undergraduate work to some study in which the Milwaukee Journal would be the guiding factor, was long a cherished ambition of the writer. It was his sincerest desire to remove from the yellowed and brittle newsprint of the Journal's past to a more permanent existence the essential characteristics of the editorial ideals and news policy upon which the late Lucius w. Nieman, founded the paper, and through which he inspired the confidence of its readers.

The Alabama Claims, Chester John Niebler Jan 1937

The Alabama Claims, Chester John Niebler

Bachelors’ Theses

It is now almost three-quarters of a century since the nation was bathed in the blood of its youth during the Civil War. To the casual observer the contest. was wholly a domestic one, with domestic interests and currents only. To the slight reader, the nation was placed above the individual states, the South was crushed, Slavery was abolished by force and law, and the Confederacy had to be reconstructed. These were primarily the problems of the United States during the period.

Negro Suffrage In The South Since The Civil War, Thomas Patrick Corbett Jan 1937

Negro Suffrage In The South Since The Civil War, Thomas Patrick Corbett

Bachelors’ Theses

The subject under consideration is highly controversial since it deals with the social and political theories of men based upon racial prejudices, one group striving for supremacy, the other for its very existence. Apparent contradictory views o-r Southern slavery are confusing to the present day student. One source reports of the staid and gentle patriarchy , lords and retainers of broad and sleepy plantations, upon which life is one of ea.se and happiness. Other sources relate of the oppression of men with barbarous cruelty and unbridled power.

Which picture is to be accepted as true? As in other situations of …

Evidences Of Sterility In The Hyacinthus Orientalis L., Mary Adelbert Jan 1937

Evidences Of Sterility In The Hyacinthus Orientalis L., Mary Adelbert

Bachelors’ Theses

In this paper, it will be the purpose of the writer to discuss the types of sterility found in the Hyacinthus orientalis and to locate the causes of this condition in the flower, with a view to possible improvement of the plant for purposes of cultivation. In speaking of a type of sterility, reference is made to some well-defined and frequently recurring condition which breaks that chain of processes that leads normally to fruit and seed production.

The Consolidation Of Rural Schools In Waller County, Eula Mae Muckleroy Jan 1937

The Consolidation Of Rural Schools In Waller County, Eula Mae Muckleroy

All Theses

Tills manuscript has been written primarily to meet a need arising from the introduction of the consolidated program into the scheme of education.

Only the conviction that there is a need in the schools for a study of the consolidated program induced the writer to undertake its preparation. The subject matter and its arrangement has been selected with regard to the following considerations: First, the history of the consolidated movement can be presented as a great movement with many undercurrents co-existent with civilization itself, and as a part of general education; Second, those facts which explain the existence of the …
