Some Recurrences Of The Don Quixote-Sancho Panza Pair In World Literature, J. Angie Wynn

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

It is not the purpose of this study to consider the influence of Don Quixote on World Literature in general, but rather to describe the imitations of Don Quixote in the works of three famous authors. These authors have each created a pair similar to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and each shows in his creation the influence of Cervantes' characters. These authors represent three different national literatures and three successive centuries. They are: Henry Fielding of eighteenth-century England; Alphonse Daudet of nineteenth-century France; and Jacinto Benavente of twentieth-century Spain. We have chosen for this study: Tom Jones, the History …

The Distribution And Utilization Of Agave In The American Southwest, Alvin Russell Grove Jul 1937

The Distribution And Utilization Of Agave In The American Southwest, Alvin Russell Grove

Biology ETDs

It is the purpose of this thesis to show in a comparative way the importance of Agave sp. for food, drink, fiber, etc., among various tribes comprising the American Southwest.

The problem is important from ethnological and ethnobiological standpoints. Through a study of man's attempt to utilize for food, etc., articles which grew at hand, one can better understand him. The methods of plant utilization show the effect of the environment on the man as well as his attempts to adjust himself to it or adjust the environment to himself. Musical Forms In The Chrisitian Church From Apostolic Times To The Gregorian Age, M Alfred Bichsel Jul 1937

Musical Forms In The Chrisitian Church From Apostolic Times To The Gregorian Age, M Alfred Bichsel

Bachelor of Divinity

Modern ecclesiastical as well as secular music has as its humble but important basis the music of the early Christian era traced through the Middle Ages. Throughout this time there are two influences which have guided the development of music in general. The one is the folk song - the music of the people which was sung by the wandering minstrels. The other is the music of the church itself which was assembled and written by the clergy, for the most part by monks. However it is the latter that bears more weight and significance, for it was the church …

Probable Origins Of The Modern Pueblos, Nan Ashton Glenn Jul 1937

Probable Origins Of The Modern Pueblos, Nan Ashton Glenn

Anthropology ETDs

The Pueblo group of the southwest has probably been given more study than any other culture group of North America. Both functional and historical studies have been made, and faint attempts set forth, to deduce the origin of the modern Pueblo culture, as a whole, from the prehistoric Pueblo culture studied by archaeologists. Theories regarding this origin have varied somewhat during the last ten years, but relatively little attempt has been made to check detailed archaeological or ethnological material of any of the Pueblo groups with data on other groups outside the area. It would seem that as far as …

The Religion Of Alexander Pope, Helen A. Stapleton Jul 1937

The Religion Of Alexander Pope, Helen A. Stapleton

Bachelors’ Theses

At the time of Pope’s birth and during the early Eighteenth Century, many anti-Catholic laws were put into practice. It was a period of liberal thought on religion and attacks on revelation were discussed in the tavern, coffee¬ house and drawing room of the day. Men of letters and men high in religious circles gave their views in a liberal way. A certain group turned to Deistic beliefs. They were not fanatics, opposed to Christianity, but liked the conceit of challenging their neo-philosophic views against revelation. Bolingbroke, who was a great friend of Pope, was foremost in this set.

Backgrounds Of The Declaration Of Independence And The Constitution In Catholic Philosophy, Joseph Edward Dean Jul 1937

Backgrounds Of The Declaration Of Independence And The Constitution In Catholic Philosophy, Joseph Edward Dean

Bachelors’ Theses

The system of representative government heralded in 1776 and conceived in 1787 by the Fathers of our country was never under such universal attack as it is at the present time. The attack is particularly insidious because it is led, not by champions of other tried and established forms of government, but by those who proclaim themselves to be the real saviors of democratic principles. The greatest danger to democracy in America is the woeful lack of interest in, and understanding of, the rights safeguarded for us by the Constitution of the United States of America. The fact that those …

A Study Of The Wahl Peptase Method, Francis C. Cretsinger Jul 1937

A Study Of The Wahl Peptase Method, Francis C. Cretsinger

Bachelors’ Theses

An interest was first aroused in this problem by Mr. Lawrence Ehrnst of the Froedtert Malting Company who has been interested for some time in devising a method for determining the peptic power of malt. Through the cooperation of Dr. J. R. Koch, the author's major professor, a study of the Wahl Peptase Test was made possible.

Anyone who attempts the study of enzymes is confronted with the various factors inhibiting enzyme action. Also, the seemingly contradictory results of different investigators is somewhat confusing. This may be attributed to the difficulty of repeating identical experimental conditions, for enzymes are very …

Teaching Of Biology In The Houston Negro High School, Nellie Ruth Boyce Jul 1937

Teaching Of Biology In The Houston Negro High School, Nellie Ruth Boyce

To the knowledge of the writer, based upon library information and that of the State Department of Education, no surveys have been made of the Houston schools with specific interest on phases of Natural Science. The need for such a survey is obvious …

For further evidence, four selected batteries of comparatively new tests were given to over one thousand children in grades two to six in the schools of Parsons, Kansas. …

Neogongorismo And Gongora In Contemporary Spanish-American Poetry, Clyde M. Denton

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

My purpose in this paper is twofold. In the first place, I wish to clarify somewhat the meaning and scope of the term "neogongorismo" and to show in what respects it resembles and in what respects it differs from gongorism. Secondly, I desire to show the attitude manifested towards Gongora by the contemporary Spanish-American literatos. I shall substantiate my deductions wherever possible with actual critical and poetic references.

The Relative Influence Of The Locus And Mass Of Destruction Upon The Control Of Handedness By The Cerebral Cortex, La Charles Fracarol Jun 1937

The Relative Influence Of The Locus And Mass Of Destruction Upon The Control Of Handedness By The Cerebral Cortex, La Charles Fracarol

Psychology ETDs

Specifically the experiment sought an answer to the following questions: (1) Is there evidence for a critical area in the cerebral cortex for the control of handedness, and if so, what are the limits of this area, i.e., what is the least destruction within this region that will produce transfers in handedness? (2) Will a destruction outside of the critical area have an effect, and if so, how large must such a destruction be to cause it? (3) What bearing will the results have upon current theories of cerebral functioning, including localization of function, physiological gradients, mass action, and equipotentiality?

The Identification And Distribution Of The Ceramic Types In The Rio Puerco Area, Central New Mexico, Dorothy Louise Luhrs

Anthropology ETDs

The present study was begun with the aim of determining what ceramic types are present in the Rio Puerco valley of the East, with consideration of their source, extent, variations and contributing factors. Due to the limitations of time the investigation was confined to the south-central portion of the area. Because the region is approximately one hundred and forty miles in length, from the northern headwaters of the Rio Puerco to the junction of the Rio Grande and Rio Puerco, it was considered best to limit the survey to a portion of the valley large enough to yield sufficient data …

A Study Of The Relation Of Temperature To Antibody Formation In Cold-Blooded Animals, Earl C. Mcdaniel

Biology ETDs

It is an established fact that when warm-blooded animals are inoculated with foreign protein, in a great many instances they become immune, due to the formation of antibodies specific for the protein injected. In warm-blooded animals the body temperature is constant. The question naturally arises as to what the situation would be with regard to antibody formation in a cold-blooded animal where body temperature is not constant; also what part, if any, the temperature of the body would have to do with the antibody formation.

In a careful review of the literature practically nothing could be found in having direct …
