A University For Negroes Of Texas-- A Promise Unfulfilled, Willie Andrew Tarrow Aug 1946

A University For Negroes Of Texas-- A Promise Unfulfilled, Willie Andrew Tarrow

All Theses

One of the problems confronting Texas today is higher education for Negroes. This is an old problem that is demanding a solution. The effort on the part of the State to solve this problem has not been commensurate with the needs and demands of Negroes. In the forty-four year period between 1876 and 1920, there has been an evolution in name. This evolution was gradually leading to that which the Negroes were entitled to. The evolutionary process was slow because of the financial support given the institution by the State.

During these fourty-four years the Negro was aware of the …

A Proposed Study Of Vocational Guidance For The Junior High Schools Of Madison County, Veola E.S David

All Theses

Every teacher does some degree of guidance whether he or she is conscious of this fact or not. The majority of teachers want to add more of this personal phase of their teaching, and to do this, wish to plan an organized guidance activity for their students. Many books have been written and numberless speeches delivered as to what constitutes an adequate or effective guidance program in the modern school. It has been suggested that such a program can be enriching, individualizing, and humanizing motif in the educational mosaic of the American secondary school. Irrespective of size, location or facilities, …

An Algealogical Study In The Vicinity Of Prairie View University, Jesse Wayne Johnson Aug 1946

An Algealogical Study In The Vicinity Of Prairie View University, Jesse Wayne Johnson

All Theses

AT "1 evidence in fossil remains indicates the presence of algae since the beginning of time. The conception of a group of plants known as algae has been and still is changing. The first delimitation of the algae as we know the term is that of A. L. de Jussieu, 1797, but his characterization of the group is practically worthless according to Smith15 because it is based entirely upon macroscopic features. Later C. A. Agardh, 1824, one of the pioneers in the study of algae, made important contributions, and Endlicher, 1836, included the algae, lichens, and fungi in a kingdom …

A Comparative Study Of Vocational Agriculture In The Point School From 1919 To 1945, B.T.W Brembry Aug 1946

A Comparative Study Of Vocational Agriculture In The Point School From 1919 To 1945, B.T.W Brembry

All Theses

The Underlying Philosophy that held the school up as an ivory town is now a casualty of war. During and following great periods of human conflict, workers begin to examine basic philosophies, question current school practices, and plan new and better programs of instruction. Once more a gigantic war effect has centered professional attention upon practical needs as never before needs that are moral, emotional, physical, and intellectual. Education is increasingly accepting a philosophy which centers school instruction around community needs. These needs may be local, regional, national, and worldwide in scope. Teachers everywhere are beginning to recognize true education …

Studies In The Determination Of Iodine In Soils Organic Materials, And Waters, Russell T. Lundell

Theses and Dissertations

A summary of the literature on the nutritional value of iodine in the diet of various forms of life is given. The majority of evidence indicates that iodine is an essential element in plant and animal nutrition. It functions particularly in animal metabolism in the form of thyroxine. The occurrence of iodine in a nature has been briefly discussed. Investigations made in this regard indicate iodine to be almost universally distributed in very minute amounts. Most iodine salts are soluble in water and their distribution is affected by water movements. Results of iodine determinations made during the course of this …

A Study Of Retention Of Percentage, Fred Dellett

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The problem of this thesis was to determine by means of a test the retention of the fundamentals of percentage as shown by beginning eighth grade pupils, who were taught percentage the previous year in the seventh grade. The fundamentals of percentage are here considered as the changing of percents to decimal fractions or common fractions, the reverse procedures, and the three types of problems arising from the relation, base times rate equals part. These quantities, base, rate, and part, are represented in the example, 300 X 12% = 36, respectively. Because of the inherent relationship of decimal fractions and …

The orderly arrangement of the archeological cultures of Missouri, showing areal and temporal relationships, appears to be one of the major problems in that state at the present time. It is proposed to undertake a classification of the known archeological cultures by means of the McKern Taxonomic System, to point out the known distribution of each culture within the state, and to undertake a tentative sequence of the classified cultures by means of evidence found in Missouri and in surrounding areas.

Some Aspects Of Protection, The Cost Equalization Principle, And The Flexible Clause In The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Of 1930, Peter J. Turano Jun 1946

Some Aspects Of Protection, The Cost Equalization Principle, And The Flexible Clause In The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Of 1930, Peter J. Turano

Political Science ETDs

It is the purpose of this work to afford a purview of the purblind adhesion of a substantial segment of the American people and their constituted representatives to obsolescent and inopportune autarchic economic policies spawned by a post-war introversive nationalism. Refutation in abundance of an enlightened commercial policy is discernable in the insensibility of the dominant political party to the panorama of altering conceptions of international responsibility, organization, and control. This work attempts to render an exposition of the particular facets of the Tariff Act of 1900 which accord an explication, through an examination of some principles upon which were …

The Crabbian Village In American Literature 1880-1940, Frances Hoag Kuliasha

English Language and Literature ETDs

There is an immediate cause for discussing the realistic village. At the present time the small town is depleted of all its youth. Those who are not in the various branches of the armed forces have gone into defense work or are filling posts left vacant by those who have done so. The village is deserted or is a refuge for the old and for the very young. The lay reader is bombarded with articles concerning this shift of population, the housing problem it has created, the moral degradation it has caused, and the serious shortage of agrarian labor that …

Geology And Ore Deposits Of The Dunmore Mine, Ouray County, Colorado, Caswell Silver Jun 1946

Geology And Ore Deposits Of The Dunmore Mine, Ouray County, Colorado, Caswell Silver

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Dunmore lode is located near Ouray, Colorado in the northwest part of the San Juan Mountains. In structure as well as mineral assemblage it shows a connection between the chimneys and veins of the region. The lode averages about 100 feet wide for 1,200 feet along the Dunmore claim. The fissure zone is over two miles long and displacement along it has offset a folded pre-Cambrian complex 4,500 feet prior to the deposition of 2,400 feet of volcanic tuff. Fissures in the pre-Cambrian rocks controlled in part the intrusion of dikes and the formation of veins. Late Tertiary faulting …

It is the purpose of this study (1) to indicate the origin and development of the Mescalero Apache Indian economy; (2) to show the reasons for its development; (3) to present a probable trend in the future of the Mescalero Apache Indian economically, as based upon past and present tribal economics.

This study has been made in the belief that there is a definite need to a fuller knowledge of the too-little-known economic history of the Mescalero Apache Indians. The roots of their economic philosophy go back many centuries, and thus it is important to trace, analyze and evaluate the …

The Opportunity Class Of The Mary D. Hill School., Gladys E. Wyatt Jun 1946

The Opportunity Class Of The Mary D. Hill School., Gladys E. Wyatt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In almost every classroom in the country there are overage boys and girls, retarded children who have been pushed along through school after repeated failures have convinced both them and their teachers and companions that they are of little consequence. Since not much can be done to remedy the situation after so many years, the only solution in most cases is to pass the children along as rapidly as possible, allowing them to sit in the successive grades where the intellectual tasks are completely beyond their limited abilities. Here they acquire more bad habits and often become personality or behavior …
