The Effect Of Environment On Heritability Of Yield In Spring Wheat, Joseph J. Bonnemann Jan 1964

The Effect Of Environment On Heritability Of Yield In Spring Wheat, Joseph J. Bonnemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The basic objective in wheat breeding is yield improvement or stabilization. The factors upon which yield depends vary from one location to another. Water stress in Alberta, Canada, in the virtual absence of rust, is limiting on yield. In the eastern Dakotas, rust development is a prime factor affecting yield. Frankel stated that the yield of grain in wheat can be resolved into number of ears per plant, number of grains per ear and weight if grain. He indicated that these could be subject to further resolution, such as number of grains per ear into number of spikelets and number …

International Trade In Cattle And Beef Products With Emphasis On The Effects Of The European Economic Community On The South Dakota Economy, Harold F. Bjarnason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trade has existed among different societies throughout man’s known history. Rulers of the various states early learned that pecuniary gains to be made from trade. Thus it was that tariffs and other restrictions to trade by which rulers could make profits were erected with the beginnings of foreign trade. The United States of America has proven itself to be one of the most efficient producers of industrial and agricultural goods in the world. Trade is important to the United States. Although few cattle and little fresh beef are exported by the United States, the exportation of beef products is considerable. …

Underemployment And Labor Force Reserves On Southeastern South Dakota Farms, Donald J. Biggar Jan 1964

Underemployment And Labor Force Reserves On Southeastern South Dakota Farms, Donald J. Biggar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The increasing productivity per farm worker resulting from technological advances in agriculture suggests the problem to be examined: the extent of underutilization of South Dakota farm family labor resources and the implications arising from this situation. Changes in the agribusiness structure of rural areas and the consequences of the prevailing population movement away from farms and rural communities will be examined in relation to likely future trends. Feasible alternatives for farm operators and for community development planning groups will be discussed. Present and proposed national agricultural policies will be examined as they apply to the problem and as they are …

Negro Contributions To The Political And Legal History Of The Southern Counties Of West Virginia, Charles Edward Easton Jan 1964

Negro Contributions To The Political And Legal History Of The Southern Counties Of West Virginia, Charles Edward Easton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The introduction of African labor as a muscular force was an adventurous enterprise, proving on trial to be the most perfect catalytic agent of production then known to commerce. This labor force was the fulfillment of the great demand of the young colony which needed a controllable and dependable labor force to make it accessible for human habitation. This labor demand made it profitable for adventurous traders to invest money in the enterprise of importing indentured servants to the new colonies in America. Later a system was developed by which individuals could come to the new colony as either indentured …

Play Patterns Of A Group Of Nursery School Children, Diane Shrier

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Purpose] The purpose of the present study is threefold: 1. To determine the typical pattern of spontaneous play for a group of twenty-five four year old nursery school children with regard to the relative amounts of time spent alone, with their peers, and with adults. 2. To define the existence and nature of correlations between each of the following: Alone and Peer; Peer and Adult; and Alone and Adult. One would predict, on the basis of previous studies already mentioned, a negative correlation both for Peer and Adult and for Alone and Peer. One would not anticipate a …

Andrew Johnson And The Failure Of Moderate Reconstruction, Fraces Jo-Ann Cartwright Jan 1964

Andrew Johnson And The Failure Of Moderate Reconstruction, Fraces Jo-Ann Cartwright

Theses & Honors Papers

This paper represents an attempt to determine why Andrew Johnson's moderate policy for the reconstruction of the South failed. Because the paper is a study of Andrew Johnson, the politician, it dwells primarily only upon the political climate of 1865--although the importance of the social and economic changes occurring during reconstruction is recognized, they are herein treated only incidentally. In essence, the paper demonstrates the defeat of a politician. It is, furthermore, the contention of the paper that moderate reconstruction failed because of the ineffectiveness of its administrator--Andrew Johnson--not because of cabalistic intrigues hatched by those whom F.B. Simkins scoffingly …

The Theology Of Self-Surrender In The Writings Of E. Stanley Jones, Varghese M. Kattapuram

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

This thesis seeks to grapple with one of the most crucial issues confronting Christian theology today, namely, what to make of the insights and discoveries of the newer disciplines of psychology, psychoanalysis, psychiatry, psychotherapy, etc. For a while psychology proceeded as though theology did not exist or as though it were a remnant of the superstitions of a previous age. However, in recent years psychological practitioners outside the church have shown somewhat greater interest in the religious life of their patients and in the role of religious life of their patients and in the role of religious life and practice …

American College Test Scores As Predictors Of College Success, Clinton W. Chapman Ii

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The prediction of academic success in institutions of higher learning is an important problem for those persons concerned with admission requirements and placement programs. Predictions of academic success also facilitate readmission procedures and are useful to counselors working with college or prospective college students.

At Marshall University, the American College Test (ACT) has been used as a measure of academic success. The test was developed to make procedures of admissions, guidance, placement and scholarship appointments more efficient. The American College Test battery consists of four tests: English Usage Test, Mathematics Usage Test, Social Studies Reading Test, and Natural Sciences Reading …

The Diversion Of Macromolecular Synthesis In L-Cells Towards Ends Dictated By Mengovirus, David Baltimore Jan 1964

The Diversion Of Macromolecular Synthesis In L-Cells Towards Ends Dictated By Mengovirus, David Baltimore

Student Theses and Dissertations

The last few years have seen the beginnings of biochemical and physiological studies on animal virus multiplication. Work of this kind with bacterial viruses had begun in the early 1950's and provided much information before research on animal viruses was initiated. The delay in the study of animal systems was due to the great difficulties which attended the development of methods of cell culture and of quantitative virology. The solution of these problems, through the painstaking work of T. Puck, H. Eagle, R. Dulbecco and their associates, has made possible the recent rapid advance in our knowledge of the rare …

The Potential Of Chemicals And Pythium Species To Control Marasmius Fairy Ring, Peter Bent Adams Jan 1964

The Potential Of Chemicals And Pythium Species To Control Marasmius Fairy Ring, Peter Bent Adams

Open Access Dissertations

Fairy Rings caused by Marasmius oreades Fr. and other fungi cause considerable damage to turfgrasses. The recommended control measures for this disease are either soil fumigation or digging up the affected turf and replacing it with noninfested soil. Both methods require subsequent reseeding or resodding of the area. Results of two years' experimentation indicate that chemical control of fairy ring disease is not practical at the present. Hence, the possibilities of biological control were explored.

This investigation has shown that Pythium aartotrogus and other Pythium species will inhibit the mycelial growth of M. oreades and Agaricus bisporus. Pythium artotrogus …

Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr. Jan 1964

Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Evaluation of many records is the only way valid judgments can be made on abundance and status. The necessity of obtaining exact dates, localities, numbers, and special weather conditions cannot be overemphasized. For this reason, records in supplement to this list are freely solicited.

The present checklist includes all species and subspecies for which specimens exist. In some instances sight records have been adequate reason for including a species on the list when no specimen existed. Sight records for species which are difficult to identify have been admitted upon careful editing. The author has followed the policy outlined by Griscom …
