The Influence Of Carcass Maturity And Marbling On Beef Muscle Pigments And Color, John R. Romans Feb 1964

The Influence Of Carcass Maturity And Marbling On Beef Muscle Pigments And Color, John R. Romans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Consumer acceptance of beef and Federal beef grades are dependent to a large extent upon color. There may or may not be a scientific basis for this. It has not been definitely shown that color =, in itself, has any effect on the palatability of meat, yet color is used as an indicator of beef quality. Meat pigment is composed largely of the chromo proteins myoglobin and hemoglobin. Factors other than the amount of pigment presents in beef muscle may influence its color. Fat and water content of the muscle may also play a role. This study was designed to …

An Inquiry Concerning Health As A Status-Role, Robert S. Redhead Feb 1964

An Inquiry Concerning Health As A Status-Role, Robert S. Redhead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An individual’s conception of his health may be influenced by social as well as physical and psychological considerations. The problem under investigation is to determine whether certain social bariables are related to conception of health and, if they are, to describe a health status-role suggested by the variables considered. Health is no longer considered to be exclusively a biological phenomenon. It is influenced by psychological and sociological forces as well as physical ones. The layman may accept the belief that a person’s attitude or his personality may affect how he feels, but he might question a statement about an individual’s …

The Effect Of An Isometric Training Program On The Speed Of Selected Leg Movements, Larry Gene Rector Feb 1964

The Effect Of An Isometric Training Program On The Speed Of Selected Leg Movements, Larry Gene Rector

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years, methods of strength development have been of great interest to both the physical educator and to the athletic coach. Experimental research is being done to determine the effect of resistance exercises as compared to other activities for the development of muscular strength. Many findings of opinions regarding muscle-boundness and finally described the term as such: “Muscle-boundness is a term applied to the general condition found in athletes accustomed to heavy work involving the use of large masses of muscles without fine gradations and precise control. The subject thus performs delicate movements awkwardly and without fine adjustment.” The …

An Investigation Of The Visual Processes Involved In The Vertical-Horizontal Illusion, Robert L. Vette Feb 1964

An Investigation Of The Visual Processes Involved In The Vertical-Horizontal Illusion, Robert L. Vette

Masters Theses

The vertical-horizontal illusion has been the object of experimental study for many years. The first man to investigate the vertical-horizontal illusion was probably Oppel in 1854. Since the time of Oppel's first experiment, many theories have been advanced in an attempt to explain what causes this illusion to occur in our perception of connected vertical-horizontal lines. The primary theory that is most widely accepted states that the vertical line in the "T" illusion will be judged longer because of the vertical-horizontal relationship.

Pan (1934) suggested that the "T" figure illusion was not due entirely to the interaction of the vertical …

Hazlitt On Burke: A Study Of William Hazlitt's Conflicting Comments On, And The Frequency And Manner In Which He Quoted Edmund Burke, Dorothy Devereux Dustin Feb 1964

Hazlitt On Burke: A Study Of William Hazlitt's Conflicting Comments On, And The Frequency And Manner In Which He Quoted Edmund Burke, Dorothy Devereux Dustin

Student Work

"I wish that some one, in these excerpting days, would extract and print together all Hazlitt's passages on Burke," wrote George Saintsbury some sixty years ago. To date no "some one" has done so, although such a compilation would be of great value to any researcher interested in William Hazlitt's political theories (if the musings of an artist-philosopher-literary critic-journalist may be called political theories).

All Hazlitt's biographers have commented on his equivocal attitudes toward Edmund Burke, Herschel Baker's recent book presenting the most comprehensive study; but these comments have been restricted almost exclusively to Hazlitt's extended discussions of the great …

The Effect Of Part-Time Farming On The Standard Of Living In The M.R. Wood School District, Leon L. Mooring Feb 1964

The Effect Of Part-Time Farming On The Standard Of Living In The M.R. Wood School District, Leon L. Mooring

All Theses

Part-time farming was effectively limited in this country until the advent of automobiles and modern highways. This resulted primarily because of the barrier of space and the lack of rapid transportation for workers.

Mighell states: Part-time farming in the broad generic sense has always been present to some extent. From ancient times those who 'live by the sea' or by seasonal or intermittent occupations, such as lumbering, mining, and fishing have operated small farms. Historically, certain combinations of farming and early manufacturing, or 'cottage industries,' were basic links in the chain of industrial evolution.

Part-time farmers in the M. R. …

Stair-Running As A Training Method, John D. Pearson Jan 1964

Stair-Running As A Training Method, John D. Pearson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effect of various training programs on the human body has long been a topic for discussion among physical educators, athletic coaches and physiologists. Although physical educators are concerned with physical fitness they are not interested in producing and individual who reaches the peak of condition necessary for strenuous athletic contests such as those found on the interscholastic or intercollegiate level. Most coaches agree that in order to have champion athletes and championship teams the individual athletes must have muscular strength and cardiovascular condition sufficient to meet the challenges of prolonged, strenuous competition. Feeling that explosive power, leg strength, and …

Antibiotic Accumulation In An Outdoor Anaerobic Poultry Manure Lagoon, Dennis A. Messmer Jan 1964

Antibiotic Accumulation In An Outdoor Anaerobic Poultry Manure Lagoon, Dennis A. Messmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is an increasing trend towards the concentration of poultry populations. With the increased popularity of confinement housing and the purchasing of the feed, less land is needed to raise and keep poultry. A serious problem arising from this change is that manure disposal is becoming increasingly difficult for owners of large poultry flocks. Lagoons have been used as a means of poultry waste disposal. This method of manure treatment is not new. The stabilization of waste in a lagoon is limited by the biological population which in turn is controlled by: nutrition, temperature, oxygen, and toxic materials. Oxytetracycline is …

Growth Characteristics And Pathogenicities Of Monospore Cultures Of Septoria Glycines, Neil Everett Martin Jan 1964

Growth Characteristics And Pathogenicities Of Monospore Cultures Of Septoria Glycines, Neil Everett Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Brown spot of soybean, caused by Septoria glycines Hemmi, is distributed widely in North America, Europe, and Asia. It sometimes causes serious defoliation and reduction in yield. The extent of damage appears to vary primarily with the crop rotation system used and with the environmental conditions of the growing season. One reason for the inconsistency, among others, may have been the variation in the ability of the pathogen to parasitize the varieties. Since no report had come to the attention of the writer that the pathogen varied in this capacity , a study was undertaken to determine: a) the cultural …

Skill Evaluation Of Majors In Physical Education, Michael Byrnes Mckay Jan 1964

Skill Evaluation Of Majors In Physical Education, Michael Byrnes Mckay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Skill tests for majors in physical education are essential to the evaluation of the abilities of the prospective teacher in physical education. Such a testing program would indicate to some extent the effectiveness of the instructional program skills. There appears to be a scarcity of research in skill testing for physical education majors. It was felt by the author that a means of evaluating the skill ability of majors in physical education at South Dakota State was needed in order to determine their level of proficiency and to also give them a better understanding of the values of attaining a …

Influence Of Proportions Of Concentrates To Roughage With Various Feed Additives On The Feedlot Performance Of Growing And Finishing Steers, Wayne Bernard Mcgillick Jan 1964

Influence Of Proportions Of Concentrates To Roughage With Various Feed Additives On The Feedlot Performance Of Growing And Finishing Steers, Wayne Bernard Mcgillick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In any feeding operation considerable attention should be given to the selection of a proper ration. A ration that will produce the most rapid gain will not necessarily produce the most economical gain. Rate of gain and fattening depend on the intake of digestible energy in excess of maintenance when the ration contains adequate amounts of other essential nutrients. Since many feed additives have become available in recent years, it is important to know their effects with various types of rations. Diethylstillbestrol have been reported to consistently improve gain and feed efficiency. Other feed additives have not been investigated as …

Economic Comparison Of Improved And Unimproved Pastures In Producing Beef In Eastern South Dakota, Duane D. Kluckman Jan 1964

Economic Comparison Of Improved And Unimproved Pastures In Producing Beef In Eastern South Dakota, Duane D. Kluckman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Native pastures are not as profitable as improved pastures which are adapted to this area. The purpose of this study is to compare net returns that can be realized by farmers in eastern South Dakota when improved rather than un-improved pastures as well as native grass. The problem is one of determing the profitability, form the whole farm standpoint, of using various improved pastures for grazing yearling beef steers compared with the profitability of using unimproved pasture. A large number of yearling feeder cattle are shipped out of South Dakota each year. Adding weight to these cattle though grazing improved …

The Effect Of An Isometric Training Program Upon Speed Of Forearm Muscle Contractions, Roger Dale Kerns Jan 1964

The Effect Of An Isometric Training Program Upon Speed Of Forearm Muscle Contractions, Roger Dale Kerns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Through the years, methods of strength development have been of great interest to both the physical educator and the athletic coach. The strength and endurance gains reported by the various authors investigating weight training led more and more coaches and teachers to become interested in this method of strength development. Six hundred men were divided into two groups. The weight lifting group were former weight lifters. The non-weight lifting group had never participated in weight lifting and was used as the control group. The findings showed that the weight lifters were faster in speed of rotary arm motion than the …

The Comparison Of Two Training Programs, Isometric Ontractions And Calisthenics, On Strength And Selected Body Measurements Of Female College Freshman, Willis R. Kelly Jan 1964

The Comparison Of Two Training Programs, Isometric Ontractions And Calisthenics, On Strength And Selected Body Measurements Of Female College Freshman, Willis R. Kelly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It would be unusual for a day to go by without some reminder on physical fitness reaching us but some information medium. The ancient Greeks considered physical education training for warfare. During and immediately after World War II there was great deal of interest in fitness. The development of muscular strength in women, as well as men, demands encouragement and investigation. The sides of women possessing muscular strength as well and being physically attractive is incongruous to many people. The author believed there was a need for a study to investigate programs designed to increase strength and to learn what …

Since ultimate design has been in great demand, extensive testing and research has been conducted concerning the properties of beams such as I beams, wood beams, plain concrete beams, and reinforced concrete beams. The present equations to predict the ultimate moment of …

A Comparative Study Of Selected Personality Traits Of Varsity Athletes, Gordon Delancey Jeppson Jan 1964

A Comparative Study Of Selected Personality Traits Of Varsity Athletes, Gordon Delancey Jeppson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The majority of coaches and physical educators recognize that the execution of physical skills is interwoven with many factors of the athlete- his intelligence, personality, and spiritual and social background. The question that arises is, how does something outside our physical system affect change inside that system? One of the most important factors affecting performance, in many instances, is the make-up of the personality or emotional side of the participants. Only recently has limited research been conducted into the make-up of the student’s personality and its importance in athletics and physical education. The primary purpose of this study was to …

The Design Of An Apparatus For Investigating Turbulent Mixing Of Two Parallel Air Streams And An Analysis Of The Half-Jet Phenomenon, Roger Alden Iverson Jan 1964

The Design Of An Apparatus For Investigating Turbulent Mixing Of Two Parallel Air Streams And An Analysis Of The Half-Jet Phenomenon, Roger Alden Iverson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Turbulent fluctuations to some degree are always present in air flow. These turbulent fluctuations are encountered in the wakes of objects in flight such as aircraft, airfoils, missiles and moving automobiles. To begin with, manty people use the word turbulence in a very general manner, to describe either a very simple unsteady motion or a very complicated vortex motion. Turbulence may be classified as either isotropic or non-isotropic. One of the best experimental techniques for studying turbulent flow involves the use of the hot-wire anemometer. Another device used for turbulence studies is the Mach Zhender interferometer. This device uses light …

Observations Of The Locomotor Responses Of Diabrotica Virgifera Lec., D. Undecimpunctata Howardi Barber And D. Longicornis (Say), As Induced By Various Odoriferous Plant Materials, Donald L. Hostetter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three species of Diabrotica, the western corn rootworm, D. Virgifera, Lec; the northern corn rootworm, D. longicornis, (say); and the southern corn rootworm, D. undecimpuenctata howardi, Barber; are generally abundant during the summer months in corn fields in various areas throughout the Midwest. Field observations indicate that these insects apparently have preferred feeding sites on host plants. In corn fields they frequently congregate and feed on the silks and tassels. As the corn reached maturity, the Diabrotica beetles feed extensively on the more succulent parts of the remaining silks. Some feeding also occurs on weeds and other plants within the …

The Leveller Influence In The New Model Army From 1647 To 1649, G. Elaine Johnson Jan 1964

The Leveller Influence In The New Model Army From 1647 To 1649, G. Elaine Johnson

Honors Theses

Although the scope of this paper, from February of 1647 to January of 1649, would seem rather limited, the actual impact of Leveller principles and methods was felt during this short span of time. After the final Agreement of the People in early 1649, the movement seemed to center around personal attacks, reiteration of previous ideas, and defensive measures. The establishment of the Commonwealth, under the thumb of Oliver Cromwell, left behind all the Leveller plans of government, which had been discussed and approved by the Agitators and the Army Council.

Other aspects of the Leveller movement, such as their …

A Comparison Of The Characteristics Of The Ped Faces And Ped Interiors In The B Horizon Of A Modal Chestnut Soil, Robert Dean Heil Jan 1964

A Comparison Of The Characteristics Of The Ped Faces And Ped Interiors In The B Horizon Of A Modal Chestnut Soil, Robert Dean Heil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mobility of the constituents of the soil has been recognized for many years. The fact that the movement of the soil constituents from one place to another in the soil profile, as conditioned by the factors of soil formation, is responsible for the development of the genetic horizons of the soil profile also has been long recognized. However, not until relatively recently has much attention been given to the orientational distributional of the soil constituents within the horizons of the soil profile. Retzer and Simonson have explored the orientational distribution of several selected soil constituents in relationship to the …

Processing Costs For Fluid Milk Packaging Operations, Hollis D. Hall Jan 1964

Processing Costs For Fluid Milk Packaging Operations, Hollis D. Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The fluid milk industry has encountered many drastic changes in marketing procedures since its conception, and it would be remiss to suppose that the ultimate in marketing methods has been obtained. The present era is not characterized by the absence of further market structure changes. One such change is the movement toward producer-processor dairy units. This concept is not new; in fact, it dates back to the infancy of the industry. The present producer-processor units, however, are of a magnitude and degree of technology not envisioned by their historical forbearers. The primary differences between the past and present producer-processor units …

An Evaluation Of The Developmental Reading Program At South Dakota State College, Ruth L. Foreman Jan 1964

An Evaluation Of The Developmental Reading Program At South Dakota State College, Ruth L. Foreman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past twenty years, much interest has been shown in the student who is handicapped in learning because of reading problems, whether of speed or comprehension or both. Attempts are being made in many colleges throughout the nation to set up reading laboratories for remedial training of these students. Since most educators assume a close correlation between reading comprehension and success in college, there is hope that by improvement of reading, more students may be able to continue and complete their college careers. The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the help given by the developmental reading …

Pork Carcass Quantity And Quality Components As Influenced By Live Weight, Robert Charles Fletcher Jan 1964

Pork Carcass Quantity And Quality Components As Influenced By Live Weight, Robert Charles Fletcher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The weight at which hogs should be marketed is a controversial issue confronting the swine industry. The producer is prompted by the nutritionist to market hogs at which feed efficiency is most desirable. The producer normally markets at heavier weights as fewer animals are needed to attain the desired net sales. However, not only do lighter hogs produce more gain on less feed, but generally they produce a carcass with less fat and a greater portion of lean. This lighter carcass produces the weight wholesale cuts which sell at a premium price and leaner retail cuts which are more desirable …

A Plan Of Trade And Job Analysis For Organizing Printing Instruction In School Or Plant Situations, Ngo Dinh Duyen Jan 1964

A Plan Of Trade And Job Analysis For Organizing Printing Instruction In School Or Plant Situations, Ngo Dinh Duyen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The trade and job analysis approach to managerial and educational problems has been employed effectively in many situations, particularly in vocational instruction in schools and industry. The continuous flow of new methods, techniques and processes, the development of intricate equipment, and the massing of information in the printing trade, require constant upgrading of skills, knowledge, talents and abilities of personnel. Also, the functions and responsibilities of the foremen or shop supervisors, now more highly specialized and better organized, are focused on human relations, production, and training. Without an organized system of presentation, any training course becomes a jumbled mass of …

Problems In The Freeze-Drying Of Foods, Minakshi Desai Jan 1964

Problems In The Freeze-Drying Of Foods, Minakshi Desai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural drying of edible seeds and fruits with the aid of the sun and wind is one of the oldest methods of preserving food and was practiced even by the people of the Stone Age. Drying means the removal of water, whereas dehydration means the application of special techniques for the removal of water with minimum damage to appearance, flavor, texture, and nutritive value. Among various methods of dehydration, freeze-drying most satisfactorily fulfills the requirements of minimum damage. Freeze-drying, also known as lypohilization, was introduced as a method of treating glands for pharmaceutical purposes. Being a slow and expensive process, …
