Milton And The Doctrine Of The Synod Of Dort Arminianism In Christian Doctrine And Paradise Lost, Robert James Fagg Apr 1964

Milton And The Doctrine Of The Synod Of Dort Arminianism In Christian Doctrine And Paradise Lost, Robert James Fagg

Master's Theses

In order to understand the similarities or areas of agreement between Milton's theology and that of the Arminians one not only has to understand thoroughly the five Arminian articles but also must be familiar with the theologies which produced them. [I] will attempt to show why a few scholars and theologians refer to Milton's Christine Doctrine and Paradise Lost as being Arminian by simply comparing the two theologies and pointing out the areas of definite agreement between them.

Current Proposals For Changes In Reserve Requirements Of Commercial Banks In The United States, William Byrd Harrison Apr 1964

Current Proposals For Changes In Reserve Requirements Of Commercial Banks In The United States, William Byrd Harrison

Master's Theses

The well-being of a nation is dependent in large part upon the state of its money. Bank reserve positions have a great deal to do with the state of our money. An impressive volume of study and evidence has been brought forth in just the past few years to indicate that United States laws which establish the rules under which financial institutions operate need revising. Other, more readily understood topics, however, however claimed the attention of the public and its representatives in Congress. Little has been done to remedy serious shortcomings in banking laws.

This paper examines briefly these studies …

Creativity And The Lowenfeld Mosaic Test With First, Second And Third Grade Children, Shelby Hargrave Cooke Apr 1964

Creativity And The Lowenfeld Mosaic Test With First, Second And Third Grade Children, Shelby Hargrave Cooke

Master's Theses

Based on the findings of the Walker study of the Lowenfield Mosaic test (1957) and the [other] studies of creativity, the following hypotheses may be made. Creative children will make original or novel designs and show complex use of color and shape. Their designs will be more asymmetrical in shape and placement and contain a greater number of places than the designs of noncreative children. They will make representational rather than abstract designs, and their human and animal figures will show motion.

The Effects Of Content Ambiguity On Response Sets In Two Populations, G. Eugene Brown Apr 1964

The Effects Of Content Ambiguity On Response Sets In Two Populations, G. Eugene Brown

Master's Theses

The study of response sets in both interest and personality inventories has received a great deal of attention and has caused much controversy concerning some of the related variables. Although response sets have long been recognized, only the last few years or so have witnessed the increased interest they have received as a potentially powerful approach in the study or human behavior.

The present study is concerned with the problem of test item ambiguity in measures designed to reflect two response sets in both student and psychiatric groups. The major purpose is that of determining whether content has the same …

Influences Of Independency In Milton's Early Life, Peter A. Edmunds Apr 1964

Influences Of Independency In Milton's Early Life, Peter A. Edmunds

Master's Theses

My thesis is that Milton did develop in his youth, mainly under the influence or Dr. Gill, a belief in his own reason as an arbitrator in theological disputes. It is this characteristic advanced Protestant view that transcends church and king together with his plea for toleration and his attack on the clergy in "Lycidas" that place him in this early period already somewhat in the tradition or deism suggested by Toland . When Thomas Paine, the revolutionary deist, wrote in The Age of Reason, "My mind is my own church," he was stating a basic belief of Milton. Thomas …

The Ethics Of Paul Weiss, Virginia C. Hill Apr 1964

The Ethics Of Paul Weiss, Virginia C. Hill

Bachelors’ Theses

The ethics of Paul Weiss is both the focal point of his philosophy and the impetus for its present refinement. As Weiss puts it, "The object of philosophical inquiry is to become a philosopher in fact." But a philosophy must have permanence, Weiss insists. Therefore, it cannot grow only out of a practical situation. Rather, a philosophy must spring from a view of the essential nature of all that is. From this view the philosopher can determine man's place in the world, the work which man must do, and the ideal toward which he must strive. This, in Weiss's mind, …

Christianity Encounters Totalitarianism In Germany, Viola M. Gross Apr 1964

Christianity Encounters Totalitarianism In Germany, Viola M. Gross

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

The German Church of the twentieth century offers a unique opportunity for study. It has twice faced a totalitarian government and has needed to learn to exist and carry on its witness to the Word of God in the face of almost insurmountable obstacles. The purpose of this paper is to contrast and compare the answer of the Church and the Christian to the National Socialists and to the Communists in East Germany, and to determine if possible if Christianity has learned the way through its desperate struggle in this century to continue its task under a hostile …

Petrography Of A Cyclical Sequence, Upper Madera Limestone, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Fred Yale Mar 1964

Petrography Of A Cyclical Sequence, Upper Madera Limestone, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Fred Yale

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Chemical determinations of calcium and magnesium carbonates, iron, Kjeldahl nitrogen, and sulfate with supplementary petrographic thin-section and insoluble-residue studies and differential thermal analyses were used to study a Virgilian sedimentary cycle in the upper Madera Limestone of New Mexico. In 120 meters of section 4 cycles were recognized; one of these was studied in detail. Cyclic subsidence and subsequent basin filling produced a sequence of gross environmental changes accomplished by organisms in a definite ecological succession. Biologic communities were progressively modified by the changing marine sedimentary cycle. The cycles of the upper Madera Limestone begin with a lower fusulinid claystone, …

The Baronial Holdings Of The Mortimers At Wigmore From The Conquest Until 1330, Catherine Deans-Barrett Mar 1964

The Baronial Holdings Of The Mortimers At Wigmore From The Conquest Until 1330, Catherine Deans-Barrett

History ETDs

This study of one great border family, the Mortimers, endeavors to show the essentially feudal atmosphere existing in England well into the fourteenth century, even while England was developing, pari passu, a more modern political organization. Although this feudal character may be portrayed and exemplified in many ways, the method chosen here is based on the beginning and subsequent fluctuations of the fortunes of one particular family, the Mortimers. Its origins on the continent cannot be easily traced, but it left an indelible impression on English history.

Since the family customarily chose to cast its lot with that of the …

The Effect Of Cesium Vapor On The Emission Characteristics Of Uranium Carbide At Elevated Pressures, Philip W. Kidd Mar 1964

The Effect Of Cesium Vapor On The Emission Characteristics Of Uranium Carbide At Elevated Pressures, Philip W. Kidd

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The saturated emission current from uranium carbide in the presence of cesium vapor were measured for four different bath temperatures: 167˚C, 197˚C, 227˚C, and 250˚C (the cesium arrival rates μa, in atoms/cm2, were 3x1018, 1x1019, 3x1019 and 6x1019). The measurements were made with a “plasma anode” type tube immersed in a constant temperature oil bath. The design of the tube is shown, and the electronic circuitry is given with an explanation of the method of measurement. The experimental data for “electron emission vs 1000/T” was plotted for the experimental …

James Thurber: Owl And Nightingale Of The Twentieth Century, Marlys Hedelund Noonan Mar 1964

James Thurber: Owl And Nightingale Of The Twentieth Century, Marlys Hedelund Noonan

Student Work

James Thurber, Twentieth Century American humorist, was both an owl and a nightingale in his writing. As an owl he took a thoughtful, serious view of the ways of men; he pondered the plight of the individual in a theory-laden, mechanical, psychological world. He was the owl of wisdom who meditated and transcribed his judgments and opinions of his fellow man. He was also an owl of darkness, for James Thurber was nearly blind all of his life.

Effect Of Liquid Viscosity On Performance Of Wire Mesh Entrainment Separators, Raymond Paul Vogel Feb 1964

Effect Of Liquid Viscosity On Performance Of Wire Mesh Entrainment Separators, Raymond Paul Vogel

Theses

The knitted wire mesh entrainment separator, commonly referred to as a demister*, is in common use to separate entrained liquid from vapor streams. However, little quantitative information is available concerning the effect of physical properties of the entrained liquid on allowable gas velocities.

Studies were made on two demister styles to determine the effect of liquid viscosity on demister performance, Liquid viscosities from 0.9 to 12 centipoise were investigated using water, glycerine-water mixtures and heavy no. 2 fuel oil as the test liquids. Air was used as the gas medium in all cases.

Regression analysis of the test data indicates …

Characteristics Of Chicken Wastes And Disposal By Lagooning, Charles Roger Wieting Feb 1964

Characteristics Of Chicken Wastes And Disposal By Lagooning, Charles Roger Wieting

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Disposal of poultry manure is becoming a greater problem as confinement of bird increases, flocks become larger, and poultry acreages decrease. Also, poultry production units are moving closer to urban areas, necessitating greater sanitation practices. Water pollution caused by surface runoff of farm animal wastes has caused additional concern for proper disposal methods. Several methods of disposal of poultry manure that have been proposed as solutions include: digesting, lagooning, field spreading as a liquid, field spreading of fresh droppings, drying, and composting. Before facilities for adequate treatment of animal wastes can be designed, the chemical, physical, and biological properties of …

A Sociometric Study Of Social Process And Structure With A Selected Sample Of Rural Youth, Wendell D. Wessman Feb 1964

A Sociometric Study Of Social Process And Structure With A Selected Sample Of Rural Youth, Wendell D. Wessman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two segments of the American population are the objects of special concern and study at the present time. This study is focused on the other end of the continuum, on the teen-ager who is struggling through the mist and dew of the morning of his day. Possessed of “youth, speed, dexterity, physical strength and endurance,” he, too, finds himself looking for a job. These hundreds of thousands of boys and girls can only expect monotonous and intermittent employment, unless they are assisted in developing the skills which available jobs require. The estimated loss to the economy of these unemployed youth …

Summer Welles' Mediation In Cuba, 1933, Margaret Naegle Feb 1964

Summer Welles' Mediation In Cuba, 1933, Margaret Naegle

Latin American Studies ETDs

This writer first became interested in the 1933 revolution in Cuba during lectures given in May, 1963 at the University of New Mexico. As part of these lectures an interesting theory was presented regarding the Communist "takeover" of Cuba. Briefly, this theory holds that behind every successful Communist revolution (Russia, China, Cuba, for examples) there has been an earlier attempt at social revolution which failed. In the case of Cuba, this would be the revolution of 1933, and especially the reformist provisional government of Dr. Ramón Grau San Martín.

The entire process of the 1933 Cuban revolution calls for an …

An Observational Study Of Differentiation Of Reinforcement At The Sixth Grade Level, Lariene Moffett Treat Feb 1964

An Observational Study Of Differentiation Of Reinforcement At The Sixth Grade Level, Lariene Moffett Treat

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of pupil IQ and sex upon the number of some immediate verbal and nonverbal reinforcements given by the teacher to the students in the regular classroom. Studies have been done which indicate some differentiation on the bases of socio-economic status and behavior. This study determined, by actual classroom observation, what differentiation in reinforcements was found on the bases of (a) pupil IQ, (b) sex of pupils, (c) sex of teachers. The relationship between verbal and nonverbal reinforcements was also investigated.

An Eclectic teaching approach to William Faulkner’s Requiem for a Nun for use in an Introduction to literature class. The purpose of this thesis is to provide the reader with a practical teaching approach to a novel in an introduction to literature course. The approach to the novel put forward in this thesis combines a number of partisan critical approaches to the novel and applies them to William Faulkner’s Requiem for a Nun. Faulkner’s novel is used as an example of the practicality of an eclectic teaching approach which may, by extension, be considered useful as an approach to any …

Application Of Group Theory To The Alpha Particle Model Of The S32 Nucleus, Jerald Arden Tunheim Feb 1964

Application Of Group Theory To The Alpha Particle Model Of The S32 Nucleus, Jerald Arden Tunheim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the alpha particle model for a nucleus one assumes that the system is composed of alpha clusters, in so far as possible, bound in some symmetrical configuration. This model is supported by the observation that many nuclei emit alpha rays. Since these nuclei are presumably constructed from alpha particles alone, bonding within such particles is apparently much stronger than that between two alpha particles and between an alpha particle and a nucleon. In the simple implementation of the model, lower excited states are associated with excitation of the 3-3 rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom. The rotational levels are …

Molecular Bonding In Rh6 (Co)16 Secular Determinants, Richard T. Thompson Feb 1964

Molecular Bonding In Rh6 (Co)16 Secular Determinants, Richard T. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of electrons in molecules is guided by the results of experiments in x-ray diffraction and molecular spectroscopy. From the symmetry existing in most molecules and a convenient set of atomic orbitals as basic functions, group theoretical calculations yield linear combination of atomic orbitals as molecular orbitals. The above technique has been very successful thus far in explaining such experimental results. This group theoretical approach is applied in the work reported here to the Rh 6(CO)16molecule observed by two Wisconsin chemists. In explaining the bonding of this molecule, two different approaches using different sets of hybrid orbitals were attempted. …

Dietary Selenium And Arsenic Additions In The Life Cycle Of Laying Hens, Nirwan Tilak Thapar Feb 1964

Dietary Selenium And Arsenic Additions In The Life Cycle Of Laying Hens, Nirwan Tilak Thapar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Economic losses from plants grown on seleniferous soils have been reported in the literature for the last 30-35 years. The overall magnitude of such losses will never be known, but to individual gerdsmen they often meant financial ruin. The earliest report of conditions indicative of selenium poisoning was by Madison (1856) as indicated by Franke in 1934. Selenium toxicity has attracted much attention in Wyoming and South Dakota in particular, where in several areas the soil contains unusually high levels of selenium. This element is absorbed and concentrated in various parts of plants. From there it may be further transferred …
