Ai-Powered Resume Screening, Sang Suh, Numery Zaber
Ai-Powered Resume Screening, Sang Suh, Numery Zaber
Faculty Publications
Traditional resume screening is manual, slow, and susceptible to bias, and it struggles to keep pace with today’s application volumes. This paper presents a dual-engine, AI-powered resume screening system designed for transparency and reproducibility. The primary (classical) pipeline encodes resumes and job descriptions using Sentence-BERT (SBERT), computes a resume–job match score via cosine similarity, classifies candidates into 25 job categories using XGBoost, and provides model interpretability through SHAP. In parallel, a prompted large language model (LLM) baseline (GPT-4o/4o-mini) outputs a match score and predicted category for comparative analysis. A Streamlit-based interface integrates both engines to support recruiter workflows and human-in-the-loop …

Inoculation Interventions, Prebunking, And Media Literacy Education Are Not The Same, Author Information Removed
JMLE Submissions Open for Review
Inoculation theory-based interventions, prebunking, and media literacy education are often discussed together because all three can help people resist harmful information. Their overlap, however, does not make them interchangeable. This essay argues that clearer distinctions are needed, especially between inoculation and prebunking. Inoculation theory centers on threat-motivated resistance to influence, whereas prebunking is more accurately understood as refutational preemption. Media literacy education is a broader educational context in which either approach may be used. I focus in particular on the difference between forewarning and threat, arguing that forewarning may reasonably support inferences about threat in some contexts but should not …

How Misinformation Literacy Relates To Political Participation: An Extended Communication Mediation Model, Author Information Removed
JMLE Submissions Open for Review
This study examines how misinformation literacy is associated with political participation in digital environments through psychological and behavioral pathways. We extend the Communication Mediation Model (CMM) by integrating it with media literacy scholarship and locus of control theory. Rather than treating media literacy as a single formal theory, we conceptualize it as a scholarly framework that specifies the competencies through which individuals access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act on media messages. Within this framework, misinformation literacy refers to applied competence in recognizing, evaluating, resisting, and responding to false or misleading information. Using survey data from 499 U.S. adults, the analysis …

Beyond Technical Proficiency: A Multidimensional Analysis Of Digital Citizenship And Civic Engagement Among South Korean College Students, Author Information Removed
JMLE Submissions Open for Review
This study investigates how specific sub-dimensions of digital citizenship predict civic engagement among South Korean college students (N=497). Using hierarchical multiple regression with gender and SNS usage time as covariates, this research analyzes four subdimensions of digital citizenship—digital literacy, participation, critical perspective, and ethics—alongside three layers of civic engagement: sense of community, social responsibility, and sociopolitical participation. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that while digital literacy functions as a baseline competency, digital participation and digital ethics serve as the most consistent predictors of civic engagement. Notably, digital participation was strongly associated with sociopolitical action, suggesting a meaningful spillover effect, while a …

People turn to video evidence to make judgments about the justifiability of an officer’s actions in use-of-force incidents. Despite beliefs that video offers an objective account of events, use-of-force footage elicits different judgments among those watching it. Across four experiments (Ntotal = 2615), we investigated whether discrepant punishment judgments arise in part because of differences in perceptions of the physical space that separates an officer and civilian. We focus on third-party observers’ subjective perceptions, as they shape public discourse and justice outcomes, influence institutional accountability, and fuel public response. Despite watching the same video, civilians appeared physically closer to officers …

Whether and how pyrimidine metabolites promote systemic autoimmunity is unknown. Here, metabolomics and 15N-amide glutamine tracing show enhanced flux through de novo pyrimidine synthesis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-prone B cells. Temporal inhibition of pyrimidine synthesis dampens SLE-prone but not foreign antigen-specific germinal center (GC), plasma cell (PC), and antibody responses. Uridine monophosphate synthase (UMPS) conditional deletion, however, reveals a B cell-intrinsic requirement of de novo pyrimidine synthesis in foreign antigen-driven and SLE-prone GC, PC, and antibody responses and kidney immune complex deposition. Metabolomics, mitochondrial stress test, metabolic flow cytometry, glycolytic rate assay, and RNA sequencing highlight the importance of …

Health Services and Informatics Research
Objective: To adapt and validate the Polish Daily Coparenting Scale (D- Cop PL) and to test its utility for modeling day-to-day coparenting quality.
Background: Daily coparenting quality varies across daily contexts; brief, ecologically valid tools to capture within-person change are scarce.
Methods: A 7-day diary study with 178 dual-income Polish parents of young children was conducted. Confirmatory factor analysis tested the two-factor structure (positive and negative daily coparenting dimensions), reliability, and convergent validity; measurement invariance examined factorial equivalence across mothers and fathers. Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS) estimated same-day daily associations between coparenting quality: parental negative …

The court dismissed this nonpayment proceeding for a defective rent demand. After the tenant's Section 8 subsidy was terminated, the landlord sought rent amounts attributable to the Section 8 portion even though the tenant had not signed rent-stabilized renewal leases after termination of the subsidy. The court held that the tenant cannot be held responsible for the Section 8 portion of the rent absent a new agreement following subsidy termination.

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers
Disordered eating behaviors are prevalent in emerging adulthood and may be shaped by family dynamics. This study examined associations among maternal and paternal differential support, weight-shape concerns, and binge eating and compensatory behaviors in emerging adulthood, while testing the moderating role of negative urgency. Participants were 517 emerging adults from across the United States (ages 18-29; M = 22.60, SD = 3.81; 76% female). Participants reported on parental differential support, weight-shape concerns, eating behaviors, and negative urgency. Using moderated-mediation analyses, we found that weight-shape concerns mediated associations between differential support and eating behaviors. Unequal maternal support and paternal favoritism showed …

Mixing of microcontroller unit (MCU) integrated circuits (ICs) during the final testing stage of semiconductor manufacturing can lead to material waste, production delays, and customer dissatisfaction. This issue often occurs when standard JEDEC Matrix Trays (JMTs) are reused without confirming that all ICs have been removed after testing, a process typically performed through manual inspection and therefore susceptible to human error due to high test volumes, small IC package sizes, and visual similarity between IC packages and tray surfaces. This study develops an automated IC Detection Test System using embedded vision to determine whether JMT trays are empty prior to …

Crewed deep-space exploration is a future milestone for the aerospace industry. Such aerospace missions demand ultrastrong, lightweight structural materials to minimize the payload mass. Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) with carbon-based reinforcements, such as carbon fiber, graphene, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), are of primary interest as structural materials for these applications. Although PMCs are lightweight and strong, their mechanical performance is limited to the weak interface region. The interface region can be strengthened by chemical functionalization of the reinforcement materials and covalent cross-linking of the matrix and the reinforcement. Molecular dynamics (MD) offers a platform for computationally investigating the effects of …

Macrophages orchestrate tissue remodeling, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction in obesity, but the role of macrophage-intrinsic extracellular proteolysis in immunometabolic regulation remains unclear. Matrix metalloproteinase-14 (MMP14), a membrane-bound protease, is strongly induced during monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation and further elevated in adipose tissue macrophages from high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. Pharmacological inhibition or myeloid-specific deletion of Mmp14 impaired macrophage differentiation, proliferation, migration, phagocytosis, and inflammatory activation in response to obesity-associated adipose tissue signals. Mechanistically, MMP14 promoted inflammatory programming by increasing endotrophin generation and enhancing TLR4-NFκB signaling. MMP14 also reprogrammed macrophage lipid metabolism by suppressing lipolysis and promoting lipid accumulation, altering metabolic communication with neighboring …

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder (SUD) represents a significant public health concern in the United States. SUD recovery is complex and individualized, and support provided by peer recovery coaches (PRCs) can improve outcomes. The PRC-client relationship requires bidirectional mediated communication that is often informal but should be trackable, efficient, and aligned with health care privacy and security regulations. Current workflows and available apps do not meet these needs, illustrating the opportunity for client-centered technology tools. We have developed Peer PLUS (People Leveraging Urgent Support; Parkview Health System, Inc), a HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)-compliant mobile app and client management …

Postoperative opioid exposure in opioid-naive patients may carry a risk of persistent opioid use. We present the case of a 16-year-old female with no significant family history who was recently diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 and found to have a rapidly enlarging mass in her left upper extremity. She was scheduled for excisional biopsy. To minimize the need for postoperative opioids, analgesia via a continuous peripheral nerve catheter was employed following resection of the malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor. This case report reviews the clinical applications of multimodal analgesia via a continuous peripheral nerve catheter in pediatric patients, including placement …

Although many youth with Tourette syndrome (TS) have at least 1 comorbid psychiatric condition (eg, obsessive-compulsive disorder), the extent to which TS is associated with depression remains unclear. This cross-sectional study examined relationships among tic severity, tic-related functional impairment, and depressive symptoms in 277 youth with TS. Tic-related impairment, but not tic severity, was associated with both self- and parent-reported depressive symptoms. An age × sex interaction emerged, such that among younger participants, females reported higher depressive symptoms than males; however, this effect was observed only for self-report, not parent report. Additionally, both depressive symptoms and tic severity were associated …

Nowadays, cotton textiles with metal oxide nanoparticle functionality exhibit promising antibacterial applications; although many aspects have been tested, fabric comfort and moisture-related performance have not been sufficiently explored. In this study, cotton (twill) fabric has been functionalized by synthesizing ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) via a controlled exhaustion process followed by thermal fixation. The synthesized nanoparticles are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), whereas scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proves the surface morphology. Antibacterial evaluation shows effective activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with a large inhibition zone (35-36 mm) and a ∼99% reduction in bacterial …

Landmark-Based Localization Of The Ansa Cervicalis And Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve For Anastomotic Reinnervation: A Cadaveric Study, Jack Hyler, Janice Wang, Paige Johnson, Kyle Singerman, Jason Brown, Sara Sloan
Student Publications
Background/Objectives: Ansa-cervicalis-to-recurrent laryngeal nerve (ARA) anastomosis is an established reinnervation procedure for unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). Successful surgery requires reliable identification of the ansa cervicalis motor entry point and the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) laryngeal entry point to facilitate tension-free anastomosis while avoiding neurovascular injury. Their positions relative to a single palpable external landmark have not been quantified. Methods: Thirty-two ansa cervicales and corresponding RLNs were dissected from 23 formalin-embalmed cadavers. Mediolateral and superoinferior distances from each nerve entry point to the inferior border of the thyroid cartilage at the midline laryngeal prominence were measured and combined into a …

Neural And Computational Mechanisms Of Effort Under The Pressure Of A Deadline, M. Andrea Pisauro, Daniele Pollicino, Lucy Fisher, Matthew A. J. Apps
School of Psychology
Deadlines fundamentally shape motivation. Research examining effort-based choices finds effort is an avoided cost. However, this overlooks how making progress on longer-term goals to be reached before deadlines motivate people to exert high effort for little immediate reward. Here, we test a framework where motivation depends on deadline pressure (work remaining / time remaining). Across four studies we use computational modelling examining decisions when physical effort makes progress on goals with deadlines. In support of the hypotheses, deadline pressure significantly impacts decision-making, shifting people from avoiding effort, to seeking the progress it makes. Using ultra-high-field fMRI, we show that functionally …
