Hospital Charity Care And Medical Debt Among Low-Wage Workers In The United States, Mathieu Despard, Stephen Roll, Eva Stahl, Camila Salvagno, Ruth Lande Aug 2026

Hospital Charity Care And Medical Debt Among Low-Wage Workers In The United States, Mathieu Despard, Stephen Roll, Eva Stahl, Camila Salvagno, Ruth Lande

Center for Social Development Research

With one in five low-wage workers reporting medical or dental debt they cannot afford to pay, financial assistance programs (also known as charity care) are an important resource. Federal law requires nonprofit hospitals to offer such programs, but evidence suggests that workers experience administrative burdens in learning about and applying for the assistance. Drawing upon data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility (WEIM) survey, this brief presents findings on associations between the characteristics of low-wage workers and their experiences with financial assistance programs. The brief also shares examples of how hospital policies and patients’ needs may not align, presenting …

Do Nonprofit Ratings Help Donors Make Better Decisions?, Ashraf Haque

Center for Policy Research

Nonprofit organizations depend on donations to fulfill their missions, but donors choosing among 1.8 million U.S. public charities often lack the time or capacity to evaluate which organizations are actually performing well. This brief summarizes findings from a study that used a five-year panel dataset of over one million nonprofit-year records from GuideStar (2014–2018) to examine how transparency seal ratings affect donation behavior. The author finds that having any GuideStar seal increases donations by about 7% compared to having no seal, and that platinum-rated nonprofits receive 34% more in donations than unrated organizations, regardless of actual organizational quality. Donors do …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The genus Myotis is one of the largest clades of bats, and it exhibits some of the most extreme variation in lifespans among mammals, alongside unique adaptations to viral tolerance and immune defence1–3. Here, to study the evolution of these phenotypes, we generated cell lines and near-complete genome assemblies for eight closely related Myotis species. Using genome-wide screens of positive selection, analyses of structural variation and functional experiments in primary cells, we identify patterns of adaptation contributing to longevity, cancer resistance and viral interactions. We demonstrate distinct modes of adaptation to DNA and RNA viruses compared with all …

Uncovering The Genetic Landscape Of Pediatric Hearing Loss Along The Texas–Mexico Border, Desiree Lanehart, Michelle Gray, Roberta Sierra, Camille Maldonado, Daniel Brooks, Hongzheng Dai, Aaly Rahimtoola, Sandy Magallan, Alberto Allegre, Lori Berry

School of Medicine Publications

Children in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), including the US border regions, experience delays in the diagnosis of hereditary hearing loss (HL), driven primarily by limited access to specialized genetic services. Although approximately 60% of congenital HL has a genetic etiology, many affected children in these communities remain undiagnosed, delaying timely intervention. Project GIVE is an NIH-funded virtual genomics program that expands access to genome sequencing (GS) for children with undiagnosed multisystemic conditions along the Texas–Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) and El Paso regions of Texas, USA. Children (0–18 years) with suspected rare diseases were referred by …

Citizen Science As A Long-Term Environmental Baseline: Assessing Impacts Of A Small Dam Removal In Montana, Usa, Bethany Blakey, Natalie Bursztyn Aug 2026

Citizen Science As A Long-Term Environmental Baseline: Assessing Impacts Of A Small Dam Removal In Montana, Usa, Bethany Blakey, Natalie Bursztyn

Watershed Sciences Student Research

As dam removals increase in frequency across Europe and North America, most research has focused on the impact of larger dam removals, despite the removal of small dams being much more common. There are hundreds of small dams in Montana, USA, and this research investigates impacts on stream ecology and morphology using citizen science data collected over eight years spanning before and after a 2020 small dam removal in Rattlesnake Creek. We analyzed pebble count grain size distributions and aquatic macroinvertebrate biotic indices from 2017 to 2024 to assess changes in sediment transport and macroinvertebrate population as well as evaluate …

Artificial Intelligence And Social Equities: Navigating The Intersectionalities In A Digital Age (Editorial), Daisuke Akiba, Julie Albright

Publications and Research

This editorial article introduces and synthesizes the Special Issue, “Artificial intelligence and social equities: navigating the intersectionalities in a digital age,” which examines how AI systems intersect with race, ethnicity, and interconnected identity dimensions across global contexts. The eight contributions span healthcare, digital media, higher education, organizational communication, and speculative futures, addressing anti-racist psychiatric algorithms, AI-generated visual disinformation, epistemic injustice between the Global North and South, algorithmically mediated rural–urban divides, culturally untranslated technology transfer, accessibility auditing across the AI lifecycle, and the tension between mechanical objectivity and empathic understanding. Read together, they show that AI is neither inherently …

Statistical Model Of Subsurface Scattering Bias In Icesat‐2'S Atl06 Product, Thilini Bamunu Arachchige, Kelly E. Gleason, Jonathan C. Ryan, Markus Allgaier

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

ICESat‐2 uses visible laser pulses and photon‐counting detectors to range the Earth's surface, providing precision altimetry for measuring ice sheet elevation change. However, since water ice is transparent to visible light, the photon returns recorded by ICESat‐2's ATLAS instrument may originate from subsurface scattering inside the snow or glacier ice volume, making the surface appear lower than it is. Here, we develop a Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer model to characterize the potential bias caused by subsurface scattering in snow and ice. Our model allows us to study the subsurface scattering bias in relation to photon number, scattering coefficient, and slope …

The Pursuit Of Civic Happiness: American Democracy Project Fall Kickoff, Ginger H. Williams, Hsin-Yen Yang, Darrell A. Hamlin

Times Talk Archive & ADP Projects

Along with "life" and "liberty," the Declaration of Independence identified "the pursuit of happiness," as a primary objective for establishing democratic governance. Individuals develop and seek happiness according to necessity, hopes, and values, but what does it mean for citizens to draw inspiration from happiness as a common purpose? The American Democracy Project at Fort Hays State University invites you to join us at the Fall Kickoff of events and opportunities related to our theme for the 2026-27 academic year: Civic Happiness. Our special guest, Library Dean Ginger Williams, will share the extraordinary plans for campus and community celebration of …

Credence Goods In Markets With Collective Reputation: Nature Of Equilibria And The Value Of Certification, Erin Krupka, Thomas P. Lyon, Arnab Mitra Aug 2026

Credence Goods In Markets With Collective Reputation: Nature Of Equilibria And The Value Of Certification, Erin Krupka, Thomas P. Lyon, Arnab Mitra

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fraud can cause markets for credence goods to collapse, but collective reputation has been suggested as a potential solution, especially when buyer valuations for quality are high. We develop a discrete model of a market for label credence goods and provide conditions for no-fraud equilibria based on collective reputation. We identify conditions under which all equilibria may be asymmetric or involve mixed strategies and hence sellers may face coordination problems. Our analysis suggests such coordination problems are the greatest when the size of the high-quality market is approximately half of the overall market (that incorporates both high- and low-quality goods), …

Endothelin Receptor Antagonists In Resistant Hypertension And Proteinuric Kidney Disease: Receptor Strategy And Volume Management, Corey Keith Goldman, Jesse M. Goldman Aug 2026

Endothelin Receptor Antagonists In Resistant Hypertension And Proteinuric Kidney Disease: Receptor Strategy And Volume Management, Corey Keith Goldman, Jesse M. Goldman

Division of Nephrology Faculty Papers

This narrative review examines how endothelin receptor antagonists (ERAs) can be used at the intersection of difficult-to-control hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and albuminuria or proteinuria. For clinicians, the central question is not receptor selectivity alone, but whether a specific agent, indication, dose, background therapy, and monitoring plan can deliver meaningful blood-pressure or kidney benefit without unacceptable fluid retention. Pulmonary arterial hypertension established the pharmacology and major safety liabilities of the class; the current implementation questions for hypertension and kidney specialists arise in systemic hypertension and proteinuric kidney disease. Aprocitentan is the first and only ERA approved for hypertension; in …

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Senator Ed Markey has opened a large lead over Congressman Seth Moulton in the final days of their primary campaign for U.S. Senate. Markey has consolidated his position among socialist and progressive likely Democratic primary voters, and is even with Moulton among moderates. More than half of Moulton voters cite age as the main reason for their support of Moulton, and less than half of Bay Staters overall believe Markey can serve another term at eighty years of age. Markey leads presumptive Republican nominee John Deaton in a general election matchup, while Moulton fares far worse if he were the …

‘Passing’ The Baton Of Trauma: Queer Failure Of The Women’S Sport Policy Working Group’S Anti-Trans ‘Position’, Meredith M. Bagley, Mary Anne Taylor, Sarah F. Price Aug 2026

‘Passing’ The Baton Of Trauma: Queer Failure Of The Women’S Sport Policy Working Group’S Anti-Trans ‘Position’, Meredith M. Bagley, Mary Anne Taylor, Sarah F. Price

Publications and Research

Engaging in critical rhetorical theory and methodology, we interrogate the contemporary landscape of anti-trans backlash in women’s sport. Specifically, we read the ‘TERF wars’ (Pearce et al.) across critiques of biofeminism (Pape) and whiteness (Fischer) while drawing upon critical social science research into trauma-bonding, bullying, and the structural impacts of gender verification policies. Our analysis focuses on the Women’s Sports Policy Working Group (WSPWG), offering a trauma-informed reading of the WSPWG’s ‘Position’ statement to illuminate how lesbian female athletes who were previously slandered for failing to meet femininity norms in sport are unable to overcome that trauma to recognize and …

Translational Initiative To Minimize Childhood Hemiparesis After Asymmetrical Perinatal Brain Injury, Susan V. Duff, Emily Garavatti, Terrie Inder Aug 2026

Translational Initiative To Minimize Childhood Hemiparesis After Asymmetrical Perinatal Brain Injury, Susan V. Duff, Emily Garavatti, Terrie Inder

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

The purpose of this perspective paper is to present a translational approach aimed at identifying the critical periods in brain development during which to provide neuroprotective and neurorestorative strategies, followed by prehensile training, to minimize hemiparesis and foster skill acquisition after asymmetrical perinatal brain injury (APBI). We contend that hemiparesis could be minimized after APBI through a multimodal sequential approach based on timely implementation of evidence-based intervention strategies. If APBI is identified early, neuroprotective techniques can be used in the first 10 days of life to minimize cell death. This can be followed in the next 3 months by the …

Retrieval Strategies For Embolized Left Atrial Appendage Closure Devices, Usama Sadiq, Muneeba Ali, Stacey Damito, Maxwell Ambrosino, Muhammad Sabri, Muhammad Ahmad Sadiq, Muhammad Hamza Sadiq, Richard Kovach, Sheena Rastogi, Muhammad Raza

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

BACKGROUND: Device embolization (DE) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO). As landmark trials broaden the eligible population for LAAO, operator preparedness for DE management becomes increasingly critical.

CASE SUMMARY: We present 4 cases of LAAO DE managed with distinct retrieval strategies: 1) open surgical retrieval with concurrent AtriClip ligation for an endothelialized left atrial device; 2) sequential transseptal then retrograde arterial snaring for intraprocedural migration to the abdominal aorta; 3) transseptal retrieval using a dedicated ONO system with cerebral embolic protection for partial left atrial dislodgment; and 4) retrograde large-bore arterial retrieval for …

Deep Learning-Based Burned Area Mapping Of California Wildfires Using Sentinel-2 And Landsat-8 Imagery Enhanced With Super-Resolution Techniques, Youngmin Seo, Seung Hee Kim, Menas Kafatos, Jinsoo Kim, Yangwon Lee Aug 2026

Deep Learning-Based Burned Area Mapping Of California Wildfires Using Sentinel-2 And Landsat-8 Imagery Enhanced With Super-Resolution Techniques, Youngmin Seo, Seung Hee Kim, Menas Kafatos, Jinsoo Kim, Yangwon Lee

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research

The increasing frequency of wildfires under a changing climate has led to extensive ecosystem destruction, highlighting the need for reliable burned area assessment using satellite imagery. Single-satellite data are constrained by observation gaps and interference from smoke and clouds, whereas multi-satellite data fusion can mitigate these limitations. Nonetheless, the fusion techniques still encounter challenges such as spatial information loss from resolution differences and cross-satellite domain mismatch. This study presents a burned area mapping framework that integrates super-resolution (SR) with transfer learning to address spatial and domain gaps in multi-satellite data. Specifically, Landsat-8 imagery is super-resolved to 7.5 m resolution, and …

Adaptation Of A Seismic Outreach Program: Collaboration Between University Students And Seaoc Mos, Paul Quinter, Ryan Lovejoy, Kristin Potterton, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Lelli Van Den Einde

Architectural Engineering

For nearly two decades, students in University of California, San Diego’s Society of Civil and Structural Engineers (UCSD SCSE) chapter have conducted a Seismic Outreach program that reaches around a thousand 4th and 6th grade students annually. This success motivated an effort to share and deploy the curriculum through other universities. To achieve this, the Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD) sought and received a 2024 National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) grant that supported collaboration between UCSD SCSE, the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC), and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly). This …
