Post-Approval Problems, Anjali D. Deshmukh M.D., J.D.

Utah Law Review

Sitting across from 4-year-old Jessica’s parents, I whispered the truth: the most promising drug to fight their daughter’s disease was a therapy approved for adults, not for children her age. We could estimate the dose, monitor her organs, and hope the toxicity would not outpace the benefits, but there was no high-quality clinical trial data proving it was safe for kids like her yet, despite congressional mandates. Unexpected safety issues are often identified after drugs are approved and used outside of a closely controlled clinical trial, especially in understudied populations like children, the elderly, and pregnant women. When I asked …

Ranked Choice Voting And Condorcet Failure In The Alaska 2022 Special Election: How Might Other Voting Systems Compare?, Jeanne Clelland Sep 2026

Ranked Choice Voting And Condorcet Failure In The Alaska 2022 Special Election: How Might Other Voting Systems Compare?, Jeanne Clelland

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The August 2022 special election for the U.S. House of Representatives in Alaska featured three official candidates and was conducted by the single-winner ranked choice voting system known as “Instant Runoff Voting.” The results of this election displayed a well-known but relatively rare phenomenon known as “Condorcet failure:” Nick Begich was eliminated in the first round despite being more broadly acceptable to the electorate than either of the other two candidates. More specifically, Begich was the Condorcet winner of this election: Based on the Cast Vote Record, he would have defeated each of the other two candidates in head-to-head contests, …

The Topology Of Simple Games, Leah Valentiner, Ismar Volić Sep 2026

The Topology Of Simple Games, Leah Valentiner, Ismar Volić

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We initiate the study of simple games from the point of view of combinatorial topology. The starting premise is that the losing coalitions of a simple game can be identified with a simplicial complex. Various topological constructions and results from the theory of simplicial complexes then carry over to the setting of simple games. Examples are cone, join, and the Alexander dual which have interpretations as familiar game-theoretic notions and objects such as the arithmetic of games and dual games. We also provide some new topological results about simple games, most notably in applications of homology of simplicial complexes to …

Redistributing Votes When Candidates Drop Out Of An Election, Stanley R. Huddy, Michael A. Jones, Jennifer M. Wilson Sep 2026

Redistributing Votes When Candidates Drop Out Of An Election, Stanley R. Huddy, Michael A. Jones, Jennifer M. Wilson

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The U.S. Presidential Primary is a series of statewide primaries and caucuses used by the Democratic and Republican parties to winnow a pool of candidates to arrive at their nominees. As unsuccessful candidates leave the race, there is a question as to how voters who planned to vote for the candidate reassign their votes in the upcoming primaries/caucuses. When a profile of voters’ preferences is independent of elimination under plurality, then voters whose first-place candidate has dropped out of the race have their votes distributed to the remaining candidates in the same proportion of the remaining candidates’ first-place votes. For …

This article describes an interesting error I committed in the course of my research in voting theory. While embarrassing, the error has led to productive discussions about mathematical failure with my students in my probability and statistics course. I describe my mistake and discuss how the incorporation of such mistakes into the classroom can enhance student trust and engagement.

States Of Disarray: Cleaning Data For Gerrymandering Analysis, Ananya Agarwal, Fnu Alusi, Arbie Hsu, Arif Syraj, Ellen Veomett Sep 2026

States Of Disarray: Cleaning Data For Gerrymandering Analysis, Ananya Agarwal, Fnu Alusi, Arbie Hsu, Arif Syraj, Ellen Veomett

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The mathematics of redistricting is an area of study that has exploded in recent years. In particular, many different research groups and expert witnesses in court cases have used outlier analysis to argue that a proposed map is a gerrymander. This outlier analysis relies on having an ensemble of potential redistricting maps against which the proposed map is compared. Arguably the most widelyaccepted method of creating such an ensemble is to use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) process. This process requires that various pieces of data be gathered, cleaned, and coalesced into a single file that can be used …

The Irrationality Of The California Gubernatorial Recall System, Wesley H. Hollday, Eric Pacuit

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We analyze California’s gubernatorial recall system using basic ideas from the mathematical theory of social choice. We expose some pathologies of the system, use computer simulations to explore how often these pathologies might occur, investigate the effects of strategic voting on the analysis, and suggest changes to the system that cure the pathologies.

Development And Psychometric Validation With Normative Levels Of The Spotlight Effect Scale Among Students Of Physical Education And Sport Sciences, Raghda Hassan Alazawy, Mais Mahmoud Salman Alazawy

Modern Sport

The Spotlight Effect, defined as individuals' tendency to overestimate the extent to which others notice and evaluate them, has important implications for psychological functioning, social interaction, and performance in educational and sport environments. Despite previous studies have addressed the Spotlight Effect theoretically and empirically, no validated instrument has been specifically developed to assess this construct especially among students of Colleges of Physical Education and Sport Sciences. This study aimed to develop and validate a Spotlight Effect Scale and establishing normative levels for its interpretation. The descriptive survey approach was used, involving 555 students from Colleges of Physical Education and Sport …

Effects Of Magnesium Supplementation On Selected Strength And Speed Performance Tests In Elite Soccer Players, Dalshad Mohammed Abdulrahman

Modern Sport

Magnesium supports energy metabolism, neuromuscular regulation, and muscle contraction, yet direct evidence for its supplementation benefits on explosive strength and sprint performance in elite soccer players remains limited. This study examined the effect of eight weeks of magnesium supplementation, combined with regular training, on vertical jump height and 30-m sprint performance in elite soccer players. This exploratory, open-label, randomized controlled trial used a parallel pretest–post-test design. Twenty-four first-team players from Duhok Sports Club were randomly allocated (1:1) to receive either 350 mg/day elemental magnesium (as magnesium citrate) for 8 weeks or regular training alone. Primary outcomes were vertical jump height …

Do College Students’ Rap Sheets Matter To Faculty And Staff?, Andrea Cantora, Crystal C. Rodriguez, Joel Capellan

Journal of College Access

This study examines college faculty and staff attitudes toward students with criminal convictions. Electronic surveys were administered to faculty and staff at five public colleges and universities in Maryland and New York (N = 264), measuring support for inclusive campus policies across three conviction categories: non-violent, violent non-sexual, and sexual violent offenses. Support was strong for students with non-violent convictions, but declined sharply as offense severity increased. Two factors were associated with more inclusive attitudes: prior experience teaching or serving this population, and the presence of a campus support program. Both mattered, but they appeared to operate through different mechanisms. …

Finding One’S “Voice” Within A World Of Generative Generics: Exploring Human-Forward Strategies For Framing Student Assignments, Evelyn Plummer Sep 2026

Finding One’S “Voice” Within A World Of Generative Generics: Exploring Human-Forward Strategies For Framing Student Assignments, Evelyn Plummer

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

The onset of A.I. applications has brought much consternation to all sectors of education. In the current phase, we are exploring the effective yet ethical adoption of A.I. tools. However, the presumption remains that A.I. is to be used for enhancing time efficiency & data comprehensiveness—as if those factors represent the best of all human endeavors. However, this GIFTS addresses a different learning objective: maintaining one’s authentic voice amid the generative tools which enable the outsourcing of one’s thinking, writing, and expression. The goal is to help students exercise autonomy and adaptation rather than relying on generated material which neither …

Personalizing Assignments In The Ai Era: The Role Of Engaged Pedagogy, Ann Liao Sep 2026

Personalizing Assignments In The Ai Era: The Role Of Engaged Pedagogy, Ann Liao

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) has taken the academic world by storm.  This G.I.F.T.S. paper argues that personalizing academic assignments may curb students’ tendency to copy and paste content from Gen AI outputs.  I demonstrate how I personalized a written assignment in one of my courses.  A total of 81 paper grades were analyzed, and no significant difference was found between students who engaged in personalizing their learning and those who did not.  Final course grades showed the same result.  Although no statistically significant difference was detected, personalizing assignments remains a valuable way to engage students in the Gen AI …

A Sign Of Our Times: Cities, Protest And Public Space, Susan Drucker Sep 2026

A Sign Of Our Times: Cities, Protest And Public Space, Susan Drucker

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

The U.S. is a country born out of protest, a nation which enshrined in its Constitution the right to assemble and petition the government, which includes the right to protest peacefully. Cities are spatial media and the site of much current contentiousness and controversy in the Trump administration’s America.  Cities can be symbols of protest such as sanctuary cities. Appropriation of everyday urban spaces and activities has been key to opposition politics. City streets have historically been the site of sign toting protesters watched o masked members of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This paper explores the historical and …

Nonverbal Communication In New York Fashion Week, Lianna Cruz, Maia Coyle Sep 2026

Nonverbal Communication In New York Fashion Week, Lianna Cruz, Maia Coyle

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Nonverbal communication research has largely explored materiality and performance independently, leaving their joint role in meaning-making underexamined. The authors applied Langerian aesthetic theory and examined how three key kinesic variables intersect with clothing to create significance and symbolism by asking, “How do rhythm, body movement, and dance build meaning in New York Fashion Week?” Following Langer and Edward T. Hall, we conducted close visual analyses of three Spring and Fall 2025 New York Fashion Week shows: Coach, Off-White, and Thom Browne. Findings indicate that these variables build meaning by creating degrees of professionalism, reinforcing meanings through clothes, and renegotiating meanings …
