Vricella, Inna N. Lobeck, Congenital Lung Malformation Study Group

Research Showcase

Background: Congenital lung malformations (CLMs) are a heterogeneous group of fetal pulmonary anomalies that may cause significant intrathoracic mass effect, leading to hydrops, pulmonary hypoplasia, and fetal demise. Prenatal interventions are used to mitigate these deleterious effects in severe cases; however, available evidence is limited to small series. Consequently, patient selection, intervention strategy, and the decision to pursue prenatal therapy are largely guided by clinician experience rather than evidence-based consensus.

Objectives/Goal: To characterize contemporary prenatal intervention practices for CLMs across a North American consortium and compare perinatal outcomes between fetuses undergoing prenatal intervention and those with similarly large lesions managed …

Evaluation Of A Pilot Study For Observation In Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax In Pediatric Patients, Cory Nonnemacher, Seth Saylors, Katelyn Sanner Dixon, Jieun Lee, Tolulope Oyetunji, Md, Shawn St. Peter

Research Showcase

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) varies greatly across institutions with our institution previously performing simple aspiration with a 12-Thal chest tube, a 6-hour clamp trial and repeat imaging. Presence of a pneumothorax or air leak after clamp release defined failure and admission for operative management. A modified protocol involving initial management of observation with repeat imaging followed by admission with chest tube placement and subsequent VATS in the case of worsening pneumothorax was instituted. This describes the outcomes of PSP management using early observation alone.

METHODS: A single institution prospective analysis was conducted at a tertiary children’s …

Kirking, Jennifer Goldman, Jennifer E. Schuster

Research Showcase

Background:

As shown by the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic, respiratory viruses have significant impact to public health, morbidity, and mortality. Large scale viral surveillance within the community can be helpful in monitoring viral spread and disease patterns, but population level testing can be costly and time consuming. Air sampling with respiratory virus testing in community settings may be a potential non-invasive, scalable method to monitor respiratory viruses.

Objectives/Goal:

We performed an ecological analysis to describe the correlation between respiratory virus detections in air and human samples across pre-kindergarten-12th grade schools to evaluate the potential for air sampling as a tool for …

Miss Ogilvy Does Not Find Herself: The Repression Of Queer Expression Post World War I, Kennedie Krieger

2026 Symposium

World War l was a historical period of intense societal change, and although it brought upon a lot of devastation, there were also groups of people that experienced liberation because of the war. Radclyffe Hall’s short story “Miss Ogilvy Finds Herself” is an example of the ways in which the war offered relief for queer women who had previously been expected to exist within rigid gender roles. Through an uncommon perspective, readers are able to get a sense of the ways in which gendered societal expectations shifted during the war and the positive outcomes this brought about. Although these hopeful …

Research Showcase

Background: Structural variants (SVs) leading to gene fusions are one of the most common classes of driver mutations in pediatric cancer. Clinical SV detection relies on a combination of techniques including karyotyping, FISH, microarray and RNA fusion testing, and, more recently, optical genome mapping.

Objectives/Goal: SV detection via long-read genome sequencing (lr-GS) offers the advantage of breakpoint and complex event resolution; however, its implementation has been limited by the lack of an optimized somatic SV caller, among other factors. Here we describe the clinical validation of lr-GS for targeted somatic SV detection in pediatric cancer using Severus, a newly available …

Uncovering Neurodevelopmental Risk In A Pediatric Intestinal Failure Population, Lindsay R. Groh, Jennifer V. Schurman, Bri Schuler, William O. San Pablo Jr, Dana M. Bakula

Research Showcase

Introduction: Intestinal failure (IF) is the need for total parenteral nutrition (TPN; nutrition through an IV) for longer than 60 days due to intestinal disease, surgical intervention, or dysfunction. Children with IF are at increased risk for developmental and mental/behavioral health concerns, due to anesthesia and prolonged hospitalizations during sensitive developmental periods, interruptions to the brain-gut axis, and exposure to medical trauma. However, psychosocial research on this population is limited and the prevalence of developmental and mental/behavioral health conditions in children with IF is unknown. We sought to assess the prevalence of developmental, mental, and behavioral health concerns in children …

Modeling Psychological And Demographic Predictors Of Analog Astronaut Mission Participation, Christian Yeara Herrero, Frányerson R. López Ochoa, Mackenzie Thomas, Phoebe Fleshman

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

As plans accelerate to send humans into orbit and to other celestial bodies, whether to lunar outposts, Mars bases, or commercial space stations, it becomes increasingly important to understand how to maintain healthy, cohesive, and productive crews in confined, isolated environments. A practical way to study human adaptation to these conditions is through analog astronaut missions on Earth. Although imperfect, these facilities provide the closest Earth-based simulation of space mission conditions. Currently, over ten analog research centers are operating worldwide, including NASA’s Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) and the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) habitats. Selecting and recruiting …
