In this paper I plan to discuss the physiological needs of space crews that must be provided for by the life support systems of space craft* I will make no effort to define how the space crew's physiological needs will be met. This is a task for the designers of life support systems, one involving all of the scientific disciplines and a subject far too broad and technical for me, as a physician, to attempt. I can only hope to present %the more urgent physiological requirements of space crews for which provision must be made when man travels in space.

For Earth Orbiting Space Stations neither expandable, extensible, nor converted propellant tanks appear as suitable for manned operations as a specially designed cabin regardless of the mission to be performed. While an interesting possibility, use of converted propellant tanks offer little advantage when viewed in the light of the overall space station system problem.

Often it is necessary to begin design studies of a missile launch stand and thrust mount before the final missile configuration has been determined. The thrust mount structure should provide: (1) dynamic stability for the missile-stand combination during captive and holddown firings, (2) sufficient stiffness to prevent excessive displacements during engine start and shutdown , (3) adequate stiffness for hot and cold engine gimbaling checkouts, and (4) sufficient stiffness to provide safe dynamic loads that may result from engine firing malfunctions. The theory of systematic atmospheric radio refraction errors affecting measurements of range and range differences (and associated time rate of change of these quantities) is developed. It is shown that the refraction errors, particularly in range difference measurements, can seriously affect the accuracy of baseline-type tracking systems. A method is derived by which the systematic portion of tL.ese errors can be removed by means of linear relationships involving the surface value of the radio refractive index; the correction process cievlsea can be used in real time if desired. Recent low elevation angle space missions have provided a means of detecting random atmospheric propagation noise in range rate difference radar data while tracking a moving target.

The range rate difference data noise increases as the elevation angle approaches the horizon. The noise increases as an approximate function of E esc 2 E down to about 4 degrees elevation and increases less rapidly below 4 degrees.

The USAF MINUTEMAN ICBM Transportation and Handling Test Program involves vibration testing of full scale motors. A major problem in vibration testing of large solid propellant motors is developing a method of embedding accelerometers in the viscoelastic propellant. The accelerometers are needed to determine experimentally the dynamic response of the propellant during the environmental tests, and to verify the motor's dynamic analysis.

This paper is a follow-on technical analysis of M The Technical Order Library in Orbit 11,! a paper written by Mr. Rene M. Winz, Titan I Technical Writing Chief, and presented to our Denver Division and corporate management last summer. In his paper, Mr. Winz proposed three alternate methods of providing technical order support to a manned orbital space station. These were: ground station-to-space station, orbiting data station, and on-board technical orders (in microform). His conclusion recommended the ground station-to-space station approach.
