Prediction Analysis And Management Decisions, Gilbert L. Roth, Carl R. Liebermann Apr 1965

Prediction Analysis And Management Decisions, Gilbert L. Roth, Carl R. Liebermann

Space Congress® Proceedings

The dynamic nature of the Apollo Program, with its many complexities, demands tomorrow 1 s answers today. To meet this need and provide decision bases upon which to act, the Apollo Program Control Directorate of NASA Headquarters has under continuous development rigorous prediction analysis techniques necessary to the detection of potential weaknesses before they become critical. This work is presently pointed toward predictions of space vehicle weight and performance as related to schedules, cost, and reliability. The prediction analysis technique described here combines applicable domains of classical statistical methods, relevancy devices, mathematical modeling, management decision criteria, electronic computer usage, hardware …

System Considerations For Establishing Prelaunch Checkout Effectiveness, Theodore Taylor Jr. Apr 1965

System Considerations For Establishing Prelaunch Checkout Effectiveness, Theodore Taylor Jr.

Space Congress® Proceedings

Factors contributing to the effectiveness of prelaunch testing are examined from a systems viewpoint. The complexity of manned space vehicles increases the quantity of test data that must be evaluated before launch can take place.

The effect of these factors on prelaunch checkout is to place greater emphasis in the care of establishing: (1) accuracy and error budgets, (2) test techniques and equipment design, and (3) methods, plans and procedures for carrying out the prelaunch test program.

By defining checkout effectiveness in terms of probabilities of undetected failures and false alarms at time of launch, the constraints on the above …

Design Considerations For A Free Space Transportation And Work Station Capsule, R. J. Dutzmann, R. F. Dunford Apr 1965

Design Considerations For A Free Space Transportation And Work Station Capsule, R. J. Dutzmann, R. F. Dunford

Space Congress® Proceedings

A concept for a low cost, low development risk Work Station Capsule for manned extra-vehicular operations is presented. Requirements for such a capsule are established and a conceptual design is outlined. The result is a low cost design providing the astronaut with improved protection and mobility and the means to make his activities more effective and safer. Operational considerations with emphasis on handling of emergencies are discussed. The authors conclude that such a design represents a highly desirable interim approach as a supplement to safe extra-vehicular operations.

Missile Attitude Sensing With Polarized Laser Beams, John L. Dailey Apr 1965

Missile Attitude Sensing With Polarized Laser Beams, John L. Dailey

Space Congress® Proceedings

An optical system has been designed to monitor the attitude of a missile during early launch phase. The system utilizes passive reflective components mounted on the missile to return a pair of laser beams transmitted from a ground station* The beams have their polarization state modulated by the reflective elements such that polarization is a function of missile attitude. The returned beams are oassed through a polarization analyzing system at the ground station and missile attitude computed from the measured polarization parameters.

"Audit - The Measuring Tool Of Quality", W. J. Flanagan Apr 1965

"Audit - The Measuring Tool Of Quality", W. J. Flanagan

Space Congress® Proceedings

This article describes a Quality audit operation that has been tested and proven to be an accurate barometer of quality effectiveness. The paper explains the organization of the audit unit as an integral part of the overall quality concept. The details of how a properly implemented audit is a reliable management tool for measuring quality competency are explained.

The paper specifies why there is a need for an independent unit to continuously evaluate the total Quality system. Methods, that may be used to assure that problem areas are detected before they become significant failures, are explained. The qualifications for competent …

An Electrodeless Technique For Full Scale Simulation Of The Re-Entry Environment, Donald D. Hollister Apr 1965

An Electrodeless Technique For Full Scale Simulation Of The Re-Entry Environment, Donald D. Hollister

Space Congress® Proceedings

A current need exists for improved methods in the ground testing of re-entry vehicles; it is believed that this need may soon become acute. Based on the arcjet, the present generation of re-entry simulators is limited in exhaust enthalpy, physical size and purity of exhaust plasma. An electrodeless technique of plasma production at very high power levels has been developed, however, which removes many of these restrictions. In addition, the properties of a plasma generator based on the electrodeless discharge are such that the discharge can be maintained over a very wide range in applied power and gas density, and …

Saturn V Mechanical Ground Support Equipment, Glenn Eudy Apr 1965

Saturn V Mechanical Ground Support Equipment, Glenn Eudy

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper presents selected items of Saturn V mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE) within the areas of umbilical and disconnects, pneumatics and servicing, and handling and auxiliary equipment. The items selected are intended to give the reader a feel for the overall magnitude and complexity of Saturn V MGSE as well as its role in the overall Saturn V program.

Data Compaction Of Rocket Booster Pcm Telemtry Data, Lawrence W. Gardenhire Apr 1965

Data Compaction Of Rocket Booster Pcm Telemtry Data, Lawrence W. Gardenhire

Space Congress® Proceedings

Three typical channels of Rocket Booster data have been studied to determine the amount of bandwidth reduction that is possible with an adaptive telemeter. The three channels included a flow measurement, a temperature measurement and an ignition pressure measurement. The time period studied was 220 seconds, starting 142. 583 seconds before first stage cut off, and for 77. 417 seconds after burn out. During this time 2640 ten-bit samples were taken on each channel. Therefore, the original data studied was composed of 79, 200 bits. The results of the study show that this could be reduced to 493 bits, when …

Functional Flow Diagrams: A New Tool For Engineering Management, S. R. Hirsch Apr 1965

Functional Flow Diagrams: A New Tool For Engineering Management, S. R. Hirsch

Space Congress® Proceedings

Technical management, often done "by "seat of the pants" during the airplane age, is "becoming more systematized and sophisticated to meet the challenge of the space age. Man's presence in space means that there are now many more alternatives to accomplishing a function. Functional flow diagrams present the technical manager with a rapid, comprehensive way to evaluate all the alternatives and the consequences of his decisions on the rest of the system. They also provide him with a tool to check the system design to assure that all the requirements are satisfied. The latest techniques are typified in the Air …

Radioisotope Power Subsystems For Space Applications, E. T. Mahefkey Jr., A. F. Manikowski Jr. Apr 1965

Radioisotope Power Subsystems For Space Applications, E. T. Mahefkey Jr., A. F. Manikowski Jr.

Space Congress® Proceedings

Many future space power requirements in the low power regime (watts to a few kilowatts) 9 with durations of a few months to years 9 are potentially satisfied by utilization of radioisotope power subsystems. The isotope power subsystems of today , essentially first generation devices, do not provide a direct basis for extrapolation to future performance capabilities. Many development problems must be solved before isotope power subsystems realize their full potential.

The currently operational isotope powered I!SNAP I! units for space application are characterized by high specific weight (l watt/lb), low power output (<=25 watts) , low heat source temperature (~1000°F)^ and low conversion efficiency (<=5%). Future capabilities promise 10 to 20 watts/lb, 2000°C heat source operation ^ and conversion efficiencies approaching 20%. This paper examines the technical advancements necessary to attain these performance capabilities.
