Military Space Communications, George A. Harter

Space Congress® Proceedings

A worldwide network of military communication satellites is now being deployed to function both as a long-haul strategic trunking system and as a system capable of supporting contingency operations. Another network is under development to handle voice and teletype messages between users with small mobile terminals. Other more specialized satellite systems are well along in the planning stage. This paper describes the evolving deployment and utilization of satellite-based systems and anticipates the trend in future operational capability.

Artificial Reefs And Coastal Fishery Resources, Richard B. Stone Apr 1973

Artificial Reefs And Coastal Fishery Resources, Richard B. Stone

Space Congress® Proceedings

Fishes congregate around coral reefs, rock outcrops and other areas with irregular, hard bottom. These areas provide shelter, food, orientation, and spawning grounds for fishes and are vital to the existance of encrusting organisms. However, much of the continental shelf area off the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States is relatively barren.

Studies by National Marine Fisheries Service biologists from the Atlantic Estuarine Fisheries Center, Beaufort, North Carolina, on reefs off New Jersey, South Carolina and Florida have demonstrated that artificial reefs effectively provide additional food and cover for fishes . Artificial reefs have a great potential as …

Finally advantages and disadvantages of the concept are summarized and some remarks on the current situation made.

Bio-Medical Electrical Disconnects, Walter E. Parsons Apr 1973

Bio-Medical Electrical Disconnects, Walter E. Parsons

Space Congress® Proceedings

Since the earliest periods of recorded history, the goodness that is man has led him to dream of, and to seek solutions for restoring life and usefulness to debilitated and paralyzed muscles. Recent technological advances in the development of bio-compatible substances, low cost, high reliability disconnects, neuroelectric stimulation devices, and neurosurgical techniques have brought this age-old dream within the grasp of contemporary researchers.

Improvements in medical care during the last two decades have resulted in the survival of an ever-increasing group of patients with severe neuro-muscular disabilities who otherwise would have succumbed to their diseases or injuries. This has created …

Flat Conductor Cable Systems: Originally Developed For Space Flight, Useful For Commercial Applications, Wilhelm Angele

Space Congress® Proceedings

Flat Conductor Cable (FCC) technology has now reached a level of development where it is being considered for, and used in, numerous interconnection projects. First developed for aerospace use, FCC is becoming a major contender for commercial wiring tasks as well. This presentation is designed to show why and how FCC has been able to make the transition from the aerospace to the commercial field.

An Optimum Organizational Structure For A Large Earth-Orbiting Multidisciplinary Space Base, James M. Ragusa Apr 1973

An Optimum Organizational Structure For A Large Earth-Orbiting Multidisciplinary Space Base, James M. Ragusa

Space Congress® Proceedings

The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify an optimum hypothetical organizational structure for a large earth-orbiting multidisciplinary research and applications (R&A) Space Base manned by a mixed crew of technologists. Since such a facility does not presently exist, in. situ empirical testing was not possible. Study activity was, therefore, concerned with the identification of a desired organizational structural model rather than the empirical testing of it. The essential finding of this research was that a four-level project type "total matrix" model will optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of Space Base technologists.

Airborne Computer Technology, W. T. Chow Apr 1973

A Concept For Space Shuttle Payload Ground Operations, Gene Mccoy Apr 1973

A Concept For Space Shuttle Payload Ground Operations, Gene Mccoy

Space Congress® Proceedings

A Space Transportation System that involves the reusable Space Shuttle offers mankind's next great frontier. The country and the NASA must approach this potential opportunity with an open mind for new ideas and concepts in operations management, business principles, and sensitivity to cost.

Our long term future in this new frontier will depend as much on our success in these areas as on our technological successes.

This paper attempts to provide, for people with a working understanding of current ground operations, some examples of these evolving concepts.

Lightening Protection Of Launch Facilities At Kennedy Space Center, F. A. Fisher Apr 1973

Lightening Protection Of Launch Facilities At Kennedy Space Center, F. A. Fisher

Space Congress® Proceedings

The location of the Apollo Launch Complex in a region of high lightning incidence necessitated that protective measures be incorporated in the design of the complex and its associated control facilities to prevent damage or interference with launch operations. Hazards to personnel, fuel and electrical or electronics systems were of particular concern. General Electric's High Voltage Laboratory, under contract to NASA, designed protective measures which were incorporated in the complex. These included control of lightning attachment points on the complex and provision of safe conduction paths to ground, control of lightning- induced voltages in umbilical systems by application of shielding …
